    Comparative effectiveness and safety of edoxaban versus warfarin in patients with atrial fibrillation:A nationwide cohort study

    Background and purposeThe effectiveness and safety of edoxaban 60 mg and 30 mg for stroke prevention compared with warfarin in patients with atrial fibrillation have not been well-described in a nationwide cohort of Caucasian patients treated in standard clinical practice.MethodsWe used Danish nationwide registries to identify patients with atrial fibrillation during June 2016 and November 2018 who were treated with edoxaban or warfarin and computed rates per 100 person-years of thromboembolic, all-cause mortality, and bleeding events using an inverse probability of treatment weighting approach to account for baseline confounding. We used weighted pooled logistic regression to compute hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals comparing events between edoxaban 60 mg and warfarin users; edoxaban 30 mg was not included in formal comparisons.ResultsWe identified 6451 atrial fibrillation patients, mean age was 72 years and 40% were females. A total of 1772 patients were treated with edoxaban 60 mg, 537 with edoxaban 30 mg, and 4142 with warfarin. The median CHA2DS2-VASc score was similar between warfarin and edoxaban 60 mg with a score of 3 (interquartile range (IQR) 2-4). In the inverse probability of treatment-weighted pseudo-population, the thromboembolic event rate for edoxaban 60 mg was 0.95 and 1.0 for warfarin, corresponding weighted hazard ratio of 1.00 (95% confidence intervals (CI) 0.59, 1.71). Edoxaban 60 mg users were associated with lower rates of all-cause mortality (3.93) compared to warfarin (6.04), with a hazard ratio of 0.64 (95% CI 0.47 to 0.88). The event rates for bleeding were 3.36 and 3.14, respectively; hazard ratio 1.09 (95% CI 0.77, 1.57).ConclusionEdoxaban 60 mg is a safe and effective treatment compared with warfarin for stroke prevention in routine clinical care for Danish (mainly Caucasian) patients with AF, with non-significantly different risks for stroke and clinically relevant bleeding, but lower all-cause mortality

    An investigation of safe and near-optimal strategies for prevention of Covid-19 exposure using stochastic hybrid models and machine learning

    In this work investigate the use of stochastic hybrid models, statistical model checking and machine learning to analyze, predict and control the rapid spreading of Covid-19. During the pandemic numerous studies using stochastic models have been produced. Most of these studies are used to predict the effect of some restrictions. In contrast, in this paper we focus on the synthesis of strategies which prevent Covid-19 spreading. The computed strategies provide valuable information which can be used by the authorities to design new and more specific restrictions. We consider two large case studies that develop in the Copenhagen area in Denmark. Our experiments show that the computed strategies significantly prevent Covid-19 spreading, and thus provide valuable information e.g. expected social distance to minimize Covid-19 spreading. On the technical side, we demonstrate the applicability of analytical methods for preventing the spreading of Covid-19 in large scenarios

    Structure–property insights into nanostructured electrodes for Li-ion batteries from local structural and diffusional probes

    Microwave heating presents a faster, lower energy synthetic methodology for the realization of functional materials. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that employing this method also leads to a decrease in the occurrence of defects in olivine structured LiFe1−xMnxPO4. For example, the presence of antisite defects in this structure precludes Li+ diffusion along the b-axis leading to a significant decrease in reversible capacities. Total scattering measurements, in combination with Li+ diffusion studies using muon spin relaxation (μ+SR) spectroscopy, reveal that this synthetic method generates fewer defects in the nanostructures compared to traditional solvothermal routes. Our interest in developing these routes to mixed-metal phosphate LiFe1−xMnxPO4 olivines is due to the higher Mn2+/3+ redox potential in comparison to the Fe2+/3+ pair. Here, single-phase LiFe1−xMnxPO4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) olivines have been prepared following a microwave-assisted approach which allows for up to 4 times faster reaction times compared to traditional solvothermal methods. Interestingly, the resulting particle morphology is dependent on the Mn content. We also examine their electrochemical performance as active electrodes in Li-ion batteries. These results present microwave routes as highly attractive for reproducible, gram-scale syntheses of high quality nanostructured electrodes which display close to theoretical capacity for the full iron phase

    The exometabolome of microbial communities inhabiting bare ice surfaces on the southern Greenland Ice Sheet

    Microbial blooms colonize the Greenland Ice Sheet bare ice surface during the ablation season and significantly reduce its albedo. On the ice surface, microbes are exposed to high levels of irradiance, freeze–thaw cycles, and low nutrient concentrations. It is well known that microorganisms secrete metabolites to maintain homeostasis, communicate with other microorganisms, and defend themselves. Yet, the exometabolome of supraglacial microbial blooms, dominated by the pigmented glacier ice algae Ancylonema alaskanum and Ancylonema nordenskiöldii, remains thus far unstudied. Here, we use a high-resolution mass spectrometry-based untargeted metabolomics workflow to identify metabolites in the exometabolome of microbial blooms on the surface of the southern tip of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Samples were collected every 6 h across two diurnal cycles at 5 replicate sampling sites with high similarity in community composition, in terms of orders and phyla present. Time of sampling explained 46% (permutational multivariate analysis of variance [PERMANOVA], pseudo-F = 3.7771, p = 0.001) and 27% (PERMANOVA, pseudo-F = 1.8705, p = 0.001) of variance in the exometabolome across the two diurnal cycles. Annotated metabolites included riboflavin, lumichrome, tryptophan, and azelaic acid, all of which have demonstrated roles in microbe–microbe interactions in other ecosystems and should be tested for potential roles in the development of microbial blooms on bare ice surfaces

    Report on the State of Available Data for the Study of International Trade and Foreign Direct Investment

    This report, prepared for the Committee on Economic Statistics of the American Economic Association, examines the state of available data for the study of international trade and foreign direct investment. Data on values of imports and exports of goods are of high quality and coverage, but price data suffer from insufficient detail. It would be desirable to have more data measuring value-added in trade as well as prices of comparable domestic and imported inputs. Value data for imports and exports of services are too aggregated and valuations are questionable, while price data for service exports and imports are almost non-existent. Foreign direct investment data are of high quality but quality has suffered from budget cuts. Data on trade in intellectual property are fragmentary. The intangibility of the trade makes measurement difficult, but budget cuts have added to the difficulties. Modest funding increases would result in data more useful for research and policy analysis.
