    Radiative cooling of H3O+ and its deuterated isotopologues

    In conjunction with ab initio potential energy and dipole moment surfaces for the electronic ground state, we have made a theoretical study of the radiative lifetimes for the hydronium ion H3_3O+^{+} and its deuterated isotopologues. We compute the ro-vibrational energy levels and their associated wavefunctions together with Einstein coefficients for the electric dipole transitions. A detailed analysis of the stability of the ro-vibrational states have been carried out and the longest-living states of the hydronium ions have been identified. We report estimated radiative lifetimes and cooling functions for temperatures << 200 K. A number of long-living meta-stable states are identified, capable of population trapping.Comment: Phys. Chem.     Bis (2-pyrimidinyl) disulfide dihydrate: a redetermination

    The crystal structure of bis(2-pyrimidinyl) disul®de dihydrate, C8H6N4S22H2O, has been redetermined using CCD diffractometer data. This has allowed for a more precise location of the water H atoms and shows the water molecules forming unusual spiral hydrogen-bonded aqua columns, as well as giving inter-column crosslinks through the pyrimidine N-atom acceptors of the disul®de molecules. The structural chemistry of aromatic disul®des has also been reviewed

    ARMD Workshop on Materials and Methods for Rapid Manufacturing for Commercial and Urban Aviation

    This report documents the goals, organization and outcomes of the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorates (ARMD) Materials and Methods for Rapid Manufacturing for Commercial and Urban Aviation Workshop. The workshop began with a series of plenary presentations by leaders in the field of structures and materials, followed by concurrent symposia focused on forecasting the future of various technologies related to rapid manufacturing of metallic materials and polymeric matrix composites, referred to herein as composites. Shortly after the workshop, questionnaires were sent to key workshop participants from the aerospace industry with requests to rank the importance of a series of potential investment areas identified during the workshop. Outcomes from the workshop and subsequent questionnaires are being used as guidance for NASA investments in this important technology area

    Taxation, Compensation, and Judicial Independence: Hatter v. United States

    Article III of the Constitution seeks to protect judicial independence, partly through a guarantee of life tenure and partly through a clause that prohibits the diminution of judges\u27 compensation . The Compensation Clause does not address the subject of taxation, but it has always been understood to affect the federal government\u27s taxing power. This article examines the framing of the Compensation Clause, some nineteenth-century detours that are inconsistent with the original understanding of the Clause, and the Supreme Court\u27s jurisprudence on taxation of judges under the Clause. The article critically analyzes the Court\u27s most recent case on the subject, United States v. Hatter. Finally, the article rejects an alternative justification for the Compensation Clause that the Court has lately advanced, namely the need to make the bench financially attractive to prospective judges. That rationale is unworthy of constitutional status under any interpretive theory

    Adding insult to rivalry: Exploring the discord communicated between rivals

    Purpose – The purpose of this research is to extend current knowledge regarding rivalry communication among sport consumers to better understand how rivals behave with one another when they communicate. Design/methodology/approach – This national survey of US sport consumers used a novel approach to explore whether and with whom rivals discuss National Football League (NFL) game outcomes. The survey captured both uniplex and multiplex data by asking respondents to name rival discussants with whom they had recently interacted, and the fan behaviors they exchanged with those named rival discussants. Findings – Through use of this novel data collection approach, new findings were uncovered related to blasting, glory out of reflective failure, schadenfreude and the influence of team identification on the exchange of rivalry fan behaviors. The results of the uniplex and multiplex data analyses uniquely showcase the ways in which social identity theory combines with team identification to enact rivalry behavior. Originality/value – This research is the first to precisely dichotomize the psychological antecedents from the communicated behavior between rival fans. Results reveal the precise ways in which team identification influences discordant communication between rival fans, which differs from past research in an interesting new way
