Convolutional Neural Networks for Epileptic Seizure Prediction
Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder and an accurate forecast of
seizures would help to overcome the patient's uncertainty and helplessness. In
this contribution, we present and discuss a novel methodology for the
classification of intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) for seizure
prediction. Contrary to previous approaches, we categorically refrain from an
extraction of hand-crafted features and use a convolutional neural network
(CNN) topology instead for both the determination of suitable signal
characteristics and the binary classification of preictal and interictal
segments. Three different models have been evaluated on public datasets with
long-term recordings from four dogs and three patients. Overall, our findings
demonstrate the general applicability. In this work we discuss the strengths
and limitations of our methodology.Comment: accepted for MLESP 201
The Multipole Resonance Probe: Simultaneous Determination of Electron Density and Electron Temperature Using Spectral Kinetic Simulation
The investigation of the spectral kinetic model of the Multipole Resonance
Probe (MRP) is presented and discussed in this paper. The MRP is a
radio-frequency driven probe of the particular spherical design, which is
suitable for the supervision and control of low-temperature plasma. The
importance of the kinetic effects was introduced in the previous study of the
spectral kinetic model of the idealized MRP. Such effects particularly dominate
the energy loss in a low-pressure regime. Unfortunately, they are absent in the
Drude model. With the help of the spectral kinetic scheme, those energy losses
can be predicted, and it enables us to obtain the electron temperature from the
FWHM in the simulated resonance curve. Simultaneously, the electron density can
be derived from the simulated resonance frequency. Good agreements in the
comparison between the simulation and the measurement demonstrate the
suitability of the presented model
The IFN-inducible Golgi- and endoplasmic reticulum- associated 47-kDa GTPase IIGP is transiently expressed during listeriosis.
Members of the 47-kDa GTPase family are implicated in an IFN-gamma-induced, as yet unclear, mechanism that confers innate resistance against infection with intracellular pathogens. Overt immunological parameters are apparently uncompromised in mice deficient for individual members and the prototype of this family, IGTP, localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum. This suggests that these GTPases are involved in intracellular defense. We analyzed the expression of the 47-kDa GTPase cognate, IIGP, in splenic sections from mice infected with the intracellular pathogen Listeria monocytogenes by immunohistochemistry. An early transient IIGP induction was observed revealing the IFN-gamma responsiveness of cellular subcompartments within the spleen in early listeriosis. Marginal metallophilic macrophages and endothelial cells within the red and white pulp strongly expressed IIGP, while other splenocytes remained negative. In vitro analyses show that both type I and type II IFNs are prime stimuli for IIGP induction in various cells, including L. monocytogenes-infected or LPS-stimulated macrophages, endothelial cells, and activated T cells. Contrary to the subcellular localization of IGTP, IIGP was predominantly associated with the Golgi apparatus and also localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum. We conclude that IIGP exerts a distinct role in IFN-induced intracellular membrane trafficking or processing
Targeting protein-loaded CB[8]-mediated supramolecular nanocarriers to cells
Supramolecular amphiphiles, consisting of ternary complexes of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), an alkylated paraquat derivative and a tetraethylene glycol-functionalized azobenzene, self-assemble into vesicles of about 200 nm in diameter. The outer surface of the vesicles was functionalized with cell-targeting ligands. These vesicles were employed for loading and delivery of proteins into cells. Supramolecular amphiphile-derived vesicles show great promise as nanocarriers of functional molecules to be transferred into cells
