    Effects of Different Drying Methods on Extractable Phenolic Compounds from Turkey Berry (Solanum torvum) Leaves

    In the Philippines, there is an abundance of plants rich in phenolic compounds such as Solanum torvum (turkey berry), a plant with antifungal, antibacterial, anticancer, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties; however, there is not much information on the extraction of its phenolics, especially on the best drying method that will give the highest yield. Drying reduces water which allows better extraction of the said phenolics, but different drying methods expose the phenolics to possible degradation. In this study, the effect of different drying methods, namely sun-drying, freeze-drying, and microwave-drying on the extraction of total phenolics from S. torvum leaves was investigated. The dried leaves were macerated to determine the best drying method that would give the highest content of phenolic compounds from S. torvum leaves. Sun-drying, the most energy-efficient method, resulted in the highest extraction yield of 2.14 ± 0.01 mg GAE/g d.w., which was significantly different from the yields of microwave-drying and freeze-drying. Freeze-drying resulted in the lowest yield of 1.02 ± 0.01 mg GAE/g d.w., while microwave-drying yielded 1.58 ± 0.03 mg GAE/g d.w. Due to the photosensitivity of the freeze-dried samples and the high temperature of microwave-drying, phenolic compounds have degraded resulting in lesser yields. Although microwave-drying yielded less than sun-drying, it is the most efficient drying method out of the three as it is more energy-efficient than freeze-drying and less time-consuming than the others

    This study examines the influence of board capital on firm performance. Annual reports are used as the main sources for data collection. This study finds that firm performance decreases with gender diversity. Next, the interlocking directorate is not associated with firm performance. The findings would be useful to Malaysian policy-makers in deliberating the board’s role as a governance mechanism in strengthening the board structure. The results suggest selecting a director with relevant knowledge and perspective rather than simply meeting the number of board seats

    DFUNet: Convolutional Neural Networks for Diabetic Foot Ulcer Classification

    Globally, in 2016, 1 out of 11 adults suffered from diabetes mellitus. Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are a major complication of this disease, which if not managed properly can lead to amputation. Current clinical approaches to DFU treatment rely on patient and clinician vigilance, which has significant limitations, such as the high cost involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and lengthy care of the DFU. We collected an extensive dataset of foot images, which contain DFU from different patients. In this DFU classification problem, we assessed the two classes as normal skin (healthy skin) and abnormal skin (DFU). In this paper, we have proposed the use of machine learning algorithms to extract the features for DFU and healthy skin patches to understand the differences in the computer vision perspective. This experiment is performed to evaluate the skin conditions of both classes that are at high risk of misclassification by computer vision algorithms. Furthermore, we used convolutional neural networks for the first time in this binary classification. We have proposed a novel convolutional neural network architecture, DFUNet, with better feature extraction to identify the feature differences between healthy skin and the DFU. Using 10-fold cross validation, DFUNet achieved an AUC score of 0.961. This outperformed both the traditional machine learning and deep learning classifiers we have tested. Here, we present the development of a novel and highly sensitive DFUNet for objectively detecting the presence of DFUs. This novel approach has the potential to deliver a paradigm shift in diabetic foot care among diabetic patients, which represent a cost-effective, remote, and convenient healthcare solution

    Comparison of magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography for breast target volume delineation in prone and supine positions

    Purpose To\ua0determine whether T2-weighted MRI improves seroma cavity (SC) and whole breast (WB) interobserver conformity for radiation therapy purposes, compared with the gold standard of CT, both in the prone and supine positions. Methods and Materials Eleven observers (2 radiologists and 9 radiation oncologists) delineated SC and WB clinical target volumes (CTVs) on T2-weighted MRI and CT supine and prone scans (4 scans per patient) for 33 patient datasets. Individual observer's volumes were compared using the Dice similarity coefficient, volume overlap index, center of mass shift, and Hausdorff distances. An average cavity visualization score was also determined. Results Imaging modality did not affect interobserver variation for WB CTVs. Prone WB CTVs were larger in volume and more conformal than supine CTVs (on both MRI and CT). Seroma cavity volumes were larger on CT than on MRI. Seroma cavity volumes proved to be comparable in interobserver conformity in both modalities (volume overlap index of 0.57\ua0(95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.54-0.60) for CT supine and 0.52\ua0(95% CI 0.48-0.56) for MRI supine, 0.56\ua0(95% CI 0.53-0.59) for CT prone and 0.55\ua0(95% CI 0.51-0.59) for MRI prone); however, after registering modalities together the intermodality variation (Dice similarity coefficient of 0.41\ua0(95% CI 0.36-0.46) for supine and 0.38\ua0(0.34-0.42) for prone) was larger than the interobserver variability for SC, despite the location typically remaining constant. Conclusions Magnetic resonance imaging interobserver variation was comparable to CT for the WB CTV and SC delineation, in both prone and supine positions. Although the cavity visualization score and interobserver concordance was not significantly higher for MRI than for CT, the SCs were smaller on MRI, potentially owing to clearer SC definition, especially on T2-weighted MR images
