Vacancy diffusion in the triangular lattice dimer model
We study vacancy diffusion on the classical triangular lattice dimer model,
sub ject to the kinetic constraint that dimers can only translate, but not
rotate. A single vacancy, i.e. a monomer, in an otherwise fully packed lattice,
is always localized in a tree-like structure. The distribution of tree sizes is
asymptotically exponential and has an average of 8.16 \pm 0.01 sites. A
connected pair of monomers has a finite probability of being delocalized. When

Social science data repositories in data deluge A case study of ICPSR's workflow and practices
Purpose - Owing to the recent surge of interest in the age of the data deluge, the importance of researching data infrastructures is increasing. The open archival information system (OAIS) model has been widely adopted as a framework for creating and maintaining digital repositories. Considering that OAIS is a reference model that requires customization for actual practice, this paper aims to examine how the current practices in a data repository map to the OAIS environment and functional components. Design/methodology/approach - The authors conducted two focus-group sessions and one individual interview with eight employees at the world's largest social science data repository, the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). By examining their current actions (activities regarding their work responsibilities) and IT practices, they studied the barriers and challenges of archiving and curating qualitative data at ICPSR. Findings - The authors observed that the OAIS model is robust and reliable in actual service processes for data curation and data archives. In addition, a data repository's workflow resembles digital archives or even digital libraries. On the other hand, they find that the cost of preventing disclosure risk and a lack of agreement on the standards of text data files are the most apparent obstacles for data curation professionals to handle qualitative data; the maturation of data metrics seems to be a promising solution to several challenges in social science data sharing. Originality/value - The authors evaluated the gap between a research data repository's current practices and the adoption of the OAIS model. They also identified answers to questions such as how current technological infrastructure in a leading data repository such as ICPSR supports their daily operations, what the ideal technologies in those data repositories would be and the associated challenges that accompany these ideal technologies. Most importantly, they helped to prioritize challenges and barriers from the data curator's perspective and to contribute implications of data sharing and reuse in social sciences
Changing communication on researchgate through interface updates
Informal scholarly communication across the Web is a growing component of the scholarly communication infrastructure. This study describes the effects of three different interfaces on these informal channels. Interface design has a widely studied effect on user behavior, and new users often encounter barriers during accessing social media tools. Using a mixed methods approach, we collected and grouped 413 posts across three distinct interfaces of ResearchGate's communication platform. Our results show that scholars were more polite in the initial group discussion interface but that user interface design did not change the core communication patterns of sharing information and opinions among scholars. The site also transitioned from one-to-many discussions to one-to-one posts, but new users were generally welcomed to the scholarly communications
PROMOTION OF REPLICATION IN LYMPHOID CELLS BY SPECIFIC THIOLS AND DISULFIDES IN VITRO : EFFECTS ON MOUSE LYMPHOMA CELLS IN COMPARISON WITH SPLENIC LYMPHOCYTES
Numerous lines of mouse lymphoid tumors (13 of 22 tested) showed, with increased sensitivity, a property of normal mouse splenic lymphocytes, the potential for growth promotion in vitro by specific thiols added to standard culture media. For lymphoma L1210 (V), structure activity relationships were examined; 9 of 30 thiols promoted growth; the most active was α-thioglycerol, effective at 0.2 µM. Thiols became oxidized under conditions of tissue culture and had half-lives of less than 8 h. Disulfides of active thiols promoted growth of lymphoma cells. The mitogenic response of splenic lymphocytes to lectins was increased by thiols-disulfides which promoted the growth of lymphoma cells, but the response varied with the mitogen preparation used and under some conditions thiols-disulfides were inhibitory
Vacancy localization in the square dimer model
We study the classical dimer model on a square lattice with a single vacancy
by developing a graph-theoretic classification of the set of all configurations
which extends the spanning tree formulation of close-packed dimers. With this
formalism, we can address the question of the possible motion of the vacancy
induced by dimer slidings. We find a probability 57/4-10Sqrt[2] for the vacancy
to be strictly jammed in an infinite system. More generally, the size
distribution of the domain accessible to the vacancy is characterized by a
power law decay with exponent 9/8. On a finite system, the probability that a
vacancy in the bulk can reach the boundary falls off as a power law of the
system size with exponent 1/4. The resultant weak localization of vacancies
still allows for unbounded diffusion, characterized by a diffusion exponent
that we relate to that of diffusion on spanning trees. We also implement
numerical simulations of the model with both free and periodic boundary

Information exchange on an academic social networking site: A multidiscipline comparison on researchgate Q&A
The increasing popularity of academic social networking sites (ASNSs) requires studies on the usage of ASNSs among scholars and evaluations of the effectiveness of these ASNSs. However, it is unclear whether current ASNSs have fulfilled their design goal, as scholars' actual online interactions on these platforms remain unexplored. To fill the gap, this article presents a study based on data collected from ResearchGate. Adopting a mixed-method design by conducting qualitative content analysis and statistical analysis on 1,128 posts collected from ResearchGate Q&A, we examine how scholars exchange information and resources, and how their practices vary across three distinct disciplines: library and information services, history of art, and astrophysics. Our results show that the effect of a questioner's intention (i.e., seeking information or discussion) is greater than disciplinary factors in some circumstances. Across the three disciplines, responses to questions provide various resources, including experts' contact details, citations, links to Wikipedia, images, and so on. We further discuss several implications of the understanding of scholarly information exchange and the design of better academic social networking interfaces, which should stimulate scholarly interactions by minimizing confusion, improving the clarity of questions, and promoting scholarly content management
Investigating perceptions and support for transparency and openness in research: Using card sorting in a pilot study with academic librarians
This paper explores the role of academic librarians as advocates for research transparency and open research. We describe the design and piloting of a qualitative card-sorting research protocol that investigates academic librarians' attitudes, awareness and practices related to research transparency. We report on preliminary results from interviews with librarians, presenting their conceptualizations of research transparency and open research, existing library services that support and advocate for both concepts, and potential services that would augment this support and advocacy. Library activities they feel are most important to the advancement of transparency and openness are identified and perceptions of disciplinary differences are noted
Load fluctuations drive actin network growth
The growth of actin filament networks is a fundamental biological process
that drives a variety of cellular and intracellular motions. During motility,
eukaryotic cells and intracellular pathogens are propelled by actin networks
organized by nucleation-promoting factors, which trigger the formation of
nascent filaments off the side of existing filaments in the network. A Brownian
ratchet (BR) mechanism has been proposed to couple actin polymerization to
cellular movements, whereby thermal motions are rectified by the addition of
actin monomers at the end of growing filaments. Here, by following
actin--propelled microspheres using three--dimensional laser tracking, we find
that beads adhered to the growing network move via an object--fluctuating BR.
Velocity varies with the amplitude of thermal fluctuation and inversely with
viscosity as predicted for a BR. In addition, motion is saltatory with a broad
distribution of step sizes that is correlated in time. These data point to a
model in which thermal fluctuations of the microsphere or entire actin network,
and not individual filaments, govern motility. This conclusion is supported by
Monte Carlo simulations of an adhesion--based BR and suggests an important role
for membrane tension in the control of actin--based cellular protrusions.Comment: To be published in PNA
