Often defined as a marginal word-formation process whose governing principles remain a matter of controversy, lexical blending has been examined from various perspectives over the past fifty years or so. Lexical blends have thus been described as (mostly) ephemeral linguistic creations, playful and witty, that are likely to occur in popular press, advertising, and product naming (Bryant 1974; Lieber 2010). Although we can nowadays understand the key characteristics of blends, in terms of their semantic, phonological and orthographic features, corpus-based studies of blends associated with particular types of discourse remain scarce. Television discourse is no exception. It has been cited as a rich source of blends (Mattiello 2013; Sams 2016), yet few have hitherto conducted their detailed analysis (cf. Andriani, Moehkardi 2019). Having noticed that blends frequently occur in the titles of episodes of animated television shows for children (e.g. Smeldorado in Inspector Gadget, The Three Smurfketeers in The Smurfs, Pinknic in The Pink Panther), we decided to investigate their structural characteristics. For this purpose, we collected a corpus of approximately 420 blends from the titles of animated series episodes, spanning 1950-2020. The analysis has shown that haplology and hyphenation feature prominently in the collected blends, as well as that several splinters are repeatedly used in their formation.Publishe

Background/Aim. Tibolone is a preparation that belongs to the group of steroidal substances. The effects of the use of the use of tibolone are the consequence of the activities of its metabolities, considering that their hormonal activity depends on the type of tissue in which they develop. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the use of tibolone on risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases in postmenopausal women. Methods. A prospective observational stady included 94 patients who had the concentration of l7ß estradiol < 50 pg/ml, and who was in menopause more than a year. Out of the total number of patients, 63 accepted to receive tibolone 2.5 mg daily (tibolone group), while 31 of the patients refused to take tibolone (control group). We measured the concentration of lipids (cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglicerides), antitrombin III, fibrinogen, and C-reactive protein, before and after the treatment within a 6-month period. Then, we compared the difference between the values of concentrations and tested the statistical significance of the difference. We also evaluated the changes of values in the concentrations of the examinated parameters inside a 6-month period in the control group. Results. In 31 patients of the control group, from the control group there were no significant changes in the values of the defined parameters as compared to their initial values after six months. But there were changes of statistical significance (p < 0.001) in values of the concentrations of the exeminated parameters before and after the treatment in the tibolone group. In fact, we recorded decreases in the total cholesterol by 17.8%, HDL cholesterol by 27%, LDL cholesterol by 4% (without statistical significance p > 0.05) and triglicerids by 35%. There were no statistical differences in the concentrations of antitrombin III, fibrionogen, and C-reactive proteine in the tibolone group before and after the treatment. Conclusion. The use of tibolone dose decrease the concentration of the total cholesterol, triglicerides, HDL cholesterol, without a significant decrease of LDL cholesterol. Also, the use of tibolone does not have any significant effect on the concentrations of antitrombin III, fibrinogen and C-reactive proteine. The number of serum parameters measured in this study was limited, thus that was the reason to discuss only about the metabolism of lipids in the patients from the tibolone group. The final conclusion about the risk for cardiovascular diseases in the patients on tibolone, howerer, reqnires were extensive further clinical exeminations

To blend so as to brand: a study of trademarks and brand names

Brand names represent valuable linguistic assets. They serve a variety of purposes, from product differentiation to corporate identity. Creativity and wit are employed in brand naming practices, frequently resulting in the formation of blends. Although blending has long been recognized as a prominent feature of advertising and marketing discourse, next to no research has hitherto been devoted to blends in brand names. Hence, the aim of this paper is to analyze approximately 600 brand names excerpted from the Portmanteau Dictionary [Thurner 1993]. Having examined the phonological, graphological, stylistic and semantic motivations, we conclude that the distinguishing features of blends in brand names are the overlap of full words and word play. In terms of particular classes of goods, blends seem to permeate the names of foods and beverages, electrical and scientific devices, toys and sporting equipment, as well as stationery, cosmetics and houseware

As a fascinating linguistic phenomenon that unites the principle of economy with creativity, playfulness and expressiveness, blending has been investigated from various perspectives for more than a century now (cf. Pound [1914]). Given that it verges upon compounding and clipping, this area of morphological research remains vaguely defined and requires further study. Moreover, the rise of English as a lingua franca has affected various languages the world over, so much so that blends are nowa..

DEVELOPMENT OF GEO-DA BASED ANDROID APPLICATION FOR SPATIAL AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF SERBIAN LONG-TERM PRECIPITATION DATA

Precipitation is one of the most important parameters to consider while analyzing risks from natural weather threats like floods and droughts. To prevent significant infrastructural and financial damage and loss, a good analysis of data and its visual presentation must be enabled. This also requires a reliable source of precipitation data for the region of interest. It is important to interpret and visualize the data obtained from meteorological stations to make an assessment, a forecast, or issue a warning. This paper describes the development of an Android application that enables visualization and analysis of average annual precipitation data for the period from 1946 to 2019, in the territory of the Republic of Serbia. Necessary precipitation data were acquired on the request from the official weather monitoring service for the Republic of Serbia (RHMSS)

Biocatalytic potential of Streptomyces strains isolated from the rhizosphere of plants and from mycorrhizosphere of fungi has been investigated. A total of 118 Streptomyces isolates were selected and functionally screened for 10 different biotechnologically important enzymatic activities: hydrolase (cellulase, cutinase, gelatinase, lipase, protease, polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) depolymerase), phenol oxidase and peroxidase (laccase, tyrosinase, and lignin peroxidase), and aminotransferase. Out of 118 tested Streptomyces spp., 90% showed at least one enzymatic activity. The most abundant were enzymes involved in the biomass degradation, as the production of cutinase, cellulase, and lignin peroxidase were detected in 31%, 40%, and 48% of the isolates, respectively. The improved specific activities of lipase (isolates BV315 and BV100) and tyrosinase (isolates BV87 and BV88) were shown in comparison with the industrially relevant activities of Pseudomonas strains. Plant rhizosphere soils were more prolific source of Streptomyces strains with biocatalytic potential in comparison with mycorrhizosphere soils. Overall, 284 enzyme activities among 118 Streptomyces isolates have been detected. This is the first comprehensive screening of Streptomyces isolates from rhizosphere and mycorrhizosphere soils for novel biocatalysts, showing that specific environmental habitats, such as rhizosphere soils, are treasure troves of Streptomyces with biocatalytic potential. This is the peer reviewed version of the paper: Biocatalytic potential of Streptomyces spp. Isolates from rhizosphere of plants and mycorrhizosphere of fungi—Spasic—2018—Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry—Wiley Online Library.
