A Six-Planet System Around the Star HD 34445
We present a new precision radial velocity dataset that reveals a
multi-planet system orbiting the G0V star HD 34445. Our 18-year span consists
of 333 precision radial velocity observations, 56 of which were previously
published, and 277 which are new data from Keck Observatory, Magellan at Las
Campanas Observatory, and the Automated Planet Finder at Lick Observatory.
These data indicate the presence of six planet candidates in Keplerian motion
about the host star with periods of 1057, 215, 118, 49, 677, and 5700 days, and
minimum masses of 0.63, 0.17, 0.1, 0.05, 0.12 and 0.38 Jupiter masses
respectively. The HD 34445 planetary system, with its high degree of
multiplicity, its long orbital periods, and its induced stellar radial velocity
half-amplitudes in the range is fundamentally unlike either our own solar system (in which only
Jupiter and Saturn induce significant reflex velocities for the Sun), or the
Kepler multiple-transiting systems (which tend to have much more compact

Label-free isolation of prostate circulating tumor cells using Vortex microfluidic technology.
There has been increased interest in utilizing non-invasive "liquid biopsies" to identify biomarkers for cancer prognosis and monitoring, and to isolate genetic material that can predict response to targeted therapies. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have emerged as such a biomarker providing both genetic and phenotypic information about tumor evolution, potentially from both primary and metastatic sites. Currently, available CTC isolation approaches, including immunoaffinity and size-based filtration, have focused on high capture efficiency but with lower purity and often long and manual sample preparation, which limits the use of captured CTCs for downstream analyses. Here, we describe the use of the microfluidic Vortex Chip for size-based isolation of CTCs from 22 patients with advanced prostate cancer and, from an enumeration study on 18 of these patients, find that we can capture CTCs with high purity (from 1.74 to 37.59%) and efficiency (from 1.88 to 93.75 CTCs/7.5 mL) in less than 1 h. Interestingly, more atypical large circulating cells were identified in five age-matched healthy donors (46-77 years old; 1.25-2.50 CTCs/7.5 mL) than in five healthy donors <30 years old (21-27 years old; 0.00 CTC/7.5 mL). Using a threshold calculated from the five age-matched healthy donors (3.37 CTCs/mL), we identified CTCs in 80% of the prostate cancer patients. We also found that a fraction of the cells collected (11.5%) did not express epithelial prostate markers (cytokeratin and/or prostate-specific antigen) and that some instead expressed markers of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, i.e., vimentin and N-cadherin. We also show that the purity and DNA yield of isolated cells is amenable to targeted amplification and next-generation sequencing, without whole genome amplification, identifying unique mutations in 10 of 15 samples and 0 of 4 healthy samples
CANDELS: The Contribution of the Observed Galaxy Population to Cosmic Reionization
We present measurements of the specific ultraviolet luminosity density from a
sample of 483 galaxies at 6<z<8. These galaxies were selected from new deep
near-infrared HST imaging from the CANDELS, HUDF09 and ERS programs. In
contrast to the majority of previous analyses, which assume that the
distribution of galaxy ultraviolet (UV) luminosities follows a Schechter
distribution, and that the distribution continues to luminosities far below our
observable limit, we investigate the contribution to reionization from galaxies
which we can observe, free from these assumptions. We find that the observable
population of galaxies can sustain a fully reionized IGM at z=6, if the average
ionizing photon escape fraction (f_esc) is ~30%. A number of previous studies
have measured UV luminosity densities at these redshifts that vary by 5X, with
many concluding that galaxies could not complete reionization by z=6 unless a
large population of galaxies fainter than the detection limit were invoked, or
extremely high values of f_esc were present. The observed UV luminosity density
from our observed galaxy samples at z=7-8 is not sufficient to maintain a fully
reionized IGM unless f_esc>50%. Combining our observations with constraints on
the emission rate of ionizing photons from Ly-alpha forest observations at z=6,
we can constrain f_esc<34% (2-sigma) if the observed galaxies are the only
contributors to reionization, or <13% (2-sigma) if the luminosity function
extends to M_UV = -13. These escape fractions are sufficient to complete
reionization by z=6. These constraints imply that the volume ionized fraction
of the IGM becomes less than unity at z>7, consistent with a number of
complementary reionization probes. If faint galaxies dominate reionization,
future JWST observations will probe deep enough to see them, providing an

Adjunctive Sitagliptin Therapy in Postoperative Cardiac Surgery Patients: A Pilot Study
Aim. We aimed to determine if sitagliptin added to standard postoperative standardized sliding-scale insulin regimens improved blood glucose. Methods. A prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study was conducted in diabetic cardiac surgery patients. Patients received sitagliptin or placebo after surgery for 4 days. The primary endpoint was to estimate the effect of adjunctive sitagliptin versus placebo on overall mean blood glucose in the 4-day period after surgery. Results. Sixty-two patients participated. Repeated measures tests indicated no significant difference between the groups in the overall mean blood glucose level with a mean of 147.2±4.8 mg/dL and 153.0±4.6 mg/dL for the test and the control group, respectively (P=0.388). Conclusions. Sitagliptin added to normal postoperative glucose management practices did not improve overall mean blood glucose control in diabetic patients in the postoperative setting
The DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey: Spectral classification of galaxies at z~1
We present a Principal Component Analysis (PCA)-based spectral
classification, eta, for the first 5600 galaxies observed in the DEEP2 Redshift
Survey. This parameter provides a very pronounced separation between absorption
and emission dominated galaxy spectra - corresponding to passively evolving and
actively star-forming galaxies in the survey respectively. In addition it is
shown that despite the high resolution of the observed spectra, this parameter
alone can be used to quite accurately reconstruct any given galaxy spectrum,
suggesting there are not many `degrees of freedom' in the observed spectra of
this galaxy population. It is argued that this form of classification, eta,
will be particularly valuable in making future comparisons between high and
low-redshift galaxy surveys for which very large spectroscopic samples are now
readily available, particularly when used in conjunction with high-resolution
spectral synthesis models which will be made public in the near future. We also
discuss the relative advantages of this approach to distant galaxy
classification compared to other methods such as colors and morphologies.
Finally, we compare the classification derived here with that adopted for the
2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and in so doing show that the two systems are very
similar. This will be particularly useful in subsequent analyses when making
comparisons between results from each of these surveys to study evolution in

The USNO-B Catalog
USNO-B is an all-sky catalog that presents positions, proper motions,
magnitudes in various optical passbands, and star/galaxy estimators for
1,042,618,261 objects derived from 3,643,201,733 separate observations. The
data were obtained from scans of 7,435 Schmidt plates taken for the various sky
surveys during the last 50 years. USNO-B1.0 is believed to provide all-sky
coverage, completeness down to V = 21, 0.2 arcsecond astrometric accuracy at
J2000, 0.3 magnitude photometric accuracy in up to five colors, and 85%
accuracy for distinguishing stars from non-stellar objects. A brief discussion

Managing marine disease emergencies in an era of rapid change
Infectious marine diseases can decimate populations and are increasing among some taxa due to global change and our increasing reliance on marine environments. Marine diseases become emergencies when significant ecological, economic or social impacts occur. We can prepare for and manage these emergencies through improved surveillance, and the development and iterative refinement of approaches to mitigate disease and its impacts. Improving surveillance requires fast, accurate diagnoses, forecasting disease risk and real-time monitoring of disease-promoting environmental conditions. Diversifying impact mitigation involves increasing host resilience to disease, reducing pathogen abundance and managing environmental factors that facilitate disease. Disease surveillance and mitigation can be adaptive if informed by research advances and catalysed by communication among observers, researchers and decision-makers using information-sharing platforms. Recent increases in the awareness of the threats posed by marine diseases may lead to policy frameworks that facilitate the responses and management that marine disease emergencies require
Twice-daily amprenavir 1200 mg versus amprenavir 600 mg/ritonavir 100 mg, in combination with at least 2 other antiretroviral drugs, in HIV-1-infected patients
BACKGROUND: Low-dose ritonavir (RTV) boosts plasma amprenavir (APV) exposure. Little has been published on the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of APV 600 mg/RTV 100 mg (APV600/RTV) twice daily (BID) compared to APV 1200 mg BID (APV1200). METHODS: ESS40011 was a 24-week, multicenter, open-label, clinical trial in which antiretroviral therapy-naïve and -experienced HIV-1-infected adults were randomized 3:1 to receive either APV600/RTV BID or APV1200 BID, in combination with ≥ 2 non-protease inhibitor antiretroviral drugs. Non-inferiority of the APV600/RTV regimen to the APV1200 regimen was established if the 95% lower confidence limit for the difference in proportion of patients achieving HIV-1 RNA <200 copies/mL at week 24 with APV 600/RTV minus APV1200 was ≥-0.12. Late in the conduct of the trial, patients not yet completing 24 weeks of therapy were given the option of continuing treatment for an additional 24-week period. RESULTS: 211 patients were randomized, 158 to APV600/RTV and 53 to APV1200. At week 24, APV600/RTV was similar to or better than APV1200 (HIV-1 RNA <200 copies/mL in 62% [73/118] vs 53% [20/38] of patients; intent-to-treat: observed analysis). In the APV600/RTV arm, significantly more patients achieved HIV-1 RNA <50 copies/mL (48% [57/118] vs 29% [11/38] with APV1200, P = 0.04), and greater mean reduction from baseline in HIV-1 RNA was observed (-2.21 vs -1.59 log(10 )copies/mL, P = 0.028). The two treatment arms were similar with respect to mean overall change from baseline in CD4+ count, frequency of drug-related grade 1–4 adverse events, and frequency of discontinuing treatment due to adverse events (most commonly nausea, diarrhea, vomiting or fatigue; 7% vs 8%), although a lower proportion of patients in the APV600/RTV arm experienced drug-related oral/perioral paresthesia (2% vs 8%). Eleven (73%) of 15 patients who had HIV-1 RNA <200 copies/mL at week 24 and chose to continue study treatment maintained this level of virologic suppression at follow-up 24 weeks later. CONCLUSIONS: APV600 RTV BID was similar to or better than APV1200 BID in virologic response. Virologic results in a small number of patients who continued treatment for 24 weeks post-study suggest that virologic suppression with APV600 RTV BID is durable
The Evolution of the Galaxy Rest-Frame Ultraviolet Luminosity Function Over the First Two Billion Years
We present a robust measurement and analysis of the rest-frame ultraviolet
(UV) luminosity function at z=4-8. We use deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging
over the CANDELS/GOODS fields, the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and the Year 1
Hubble Frontier Field deep parallel observations. These surveys provides an
effective volume of 0.6-1.2 x 10^6 Mpc^3 over this epoch, allowing us to
perform a robust search for faint (M_UV=-18) and bright (M_UV < -21) galaxies.
We select candidate galaxies using a well-tested photometric redshift technique
with careful screening of contaminants, finding a sample of 7446 galaxies at
3.51000 galaxies at z~6-8. We measure the luminosity function
using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis to measure robust uncertainties. At
the faint end our results agree with previous studies, yet we find a higher
abundance of UV-bright galaxies at z>6, with M* ~ -21 at z>5, different than
that inferred based on previous trends at lower redshift. At z=8, a single
power-law provides an equally good fit to the UV luminosity function, while at
z=6 and 7, an exponential cutoff at the bright-end is moderately preferred. We
compare to semi-analytical models, and find that the lack of evolution in M* is
consistent with models where the impact of dust attenuation on the bright-end
of the luminosity function decreases at higher redshift. We measure the
evolution of the cosmic star-formation rate density, correcting for dust
attenuation, and find that it declines as (1+z)^(-4.3 +/- 0.5) at z>4,
consistent with observations at z>9. Our observations are consistent with a
reionization history that starts at z>10, completes at z>6, and reaches a
midpoint (x_HII = 0.5) at 6.7<z<9.4. Finally, our observations predict that the
abundance of bright z=9 galaxies is likely higher than previous constraints,
though consistent with recent estimates of bright z~10 galaxies. [abridged]Comment: Re-submitted to the Astrophysical Journal after first referee's

Solar System Objects Observed in the SDSS Commissioning Data
We discuss measurements of the properties of about 10,000 asteroids detected
in 500 deg2 of sky in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) commissioning data.
The moving objects are detected in the magnitude range 14 < r < 21.5, with a
baseline of 5 minutes. Extensive tests show that the sample is at least 98%
complete, with the contamination rate of less than 3%.
We find that the size distribution of asteroids resembles a broken power-law,
independent of the heliocentric distance: D^{-2.3} for 0.4 km < D < 5 km, and
D^{-4} for 5 km < D < 40 km. As a consequence of this break, the number of
asteroids with r < 21.5 is ten times smaller than predicted by extrapolating
the power-law relation observed for brighter asteroids (r < 18). The observed
counts imply that there are about 530,000 objects with D>1 km in the asteroid
belt, or about four times less than previous estimates.
The distribution of main belt asteroids in the 4-dimensional SDSS color space
is bimodal, and the two groups can be associated with S (rocky) and C
(carbonaceous) asteroids. A strong bimodality is also seen in the heliocentric
distribution of asteroids and suggests the existence of two distinct belts: the
inner rocky belt, about 1 AU wide (FWHM) and centered at R~2.8 AU, and the
outer carbonaceous belt, about 0.5 AU wide and centered at R~3.2 AU. The colors
of Hungarias, Mars crossers, and near-Earth objects are more similar to the
C-type than to S-type asteroids, suggesting that they originate in the outer
