Tool Wear Effect on Cutting Forces: In Routing process of Aleppo Pine Wood

    Get PDF
This paper uses the cutting forces in a routing process of Aleppo pine wood to estimate the tool wear effect. The aim is to obtain further information about the tool wear effect by monitoring the variation in the cutting forces. A Kistler 9257A 3 axes Dynamometer was positioned under the workpiece to measure the cutting forces at frequencies up to 10,000 Hz. The experiments were carried out on a CNC routing machine RECORD1 of SCM. A carbide tool was used and the cutting parameters were fixed. The cutting speed was approximately 25 m/s. Dasylab software was used to capture the data. The results show a correlation between the tool wear and the computed angle ( ), between the tangential and cutting forces. In fact, the variation of ( ) is unstable in the running period and stable in the linear wear zone, included in the interval [−1.11°; −1.10°]. This study was performed as part of a development program for the Algerian wood industry, hence the selection Aleppo pine wood as the working material.FCBA Institut Technologique, FSE (Fond Social Européen), CRB (Conseil Régional de Bourgogne) and University of Boumerdes (Algeria

Experimental approach of coconut peeling process

A substantial area of senile coconut palms exists within the Asia-Pacific region. Once coconut palms become over-mature and senile, their production of traditional products, such as coconuts, significantly decreases, resulting in profitability challenges for farmers. Presently, few profitable markets exist for over-mature, senile coconut palms. Using the coconut palm stem in composite or engineered wood products could, however, provide an attractive alternative. Coconut palm wood differs substantially from hardwood, softwood, and even the wood of other palms. Due to some of its unique characteristics, a processing system able to recover wood from the highdensity zone near the stem periphery is desirable. A series of rotary veneer laboratory trials were undertaken to establish fundamental benchmark lathe settings and veneering characteristics for coconut palm stems. Different pressure bar configurations, billet pre-treatment temperatures, and veneer thicknesses were tested and the resulting cutting forces and veneer quality were assessed.Xylomat Technical Platform from the Xylomat Scientific Network funded by ANR-10-EQPX-16 XYLOFORES

Online measurement of veneer lathe checks

    Get PDF
The present work deals with online lathe checks measurement. It is one of the most critical defects of veneer (leading to handling difficulties, excess of glue consumption, poor veneer surface quality, etc.). It could be characterized by lathe checks depth or frequency but these indicators require tedious measurements of the veneers. The objective of this work is to get an estimation of veneer lathe check indicators from vibratory and acoustical measurements. This approach is inspired by operators who are able to adapt the lathe settings “at the noise”. Acoustic and vibratory measurements during the peeling process were performed. Several signal processing techniques giving a spectral representation of sensors measurements are compared. Finally, an analysis of spectrum is proposed to measure the average lathe check frequency of the veneer during the process.Xylomat Scientific Network funded by ANR-10-EQPX-16 XYLOFOREST.

Mechanical characterization of heat-treated ash wood in relation with structural timber standards

    Get PDF
Heat treatment is an attractive method to enhance wood durability, and valorize local hardwood species with natural low durability. Yet no standard allows the certification of such products. This study first aims to observe the influence of heat treatment on the different mechanical properties. The standard mechanical tests; bending, tension parallel and perpendicular to grain, compression parallel and perpendicular to grain and shear, have been performed on native and heat-treated woods samples. The measurements are then compared to values of EN 338 standard. Results reveal that shear strength is the property most affected by heat treatment and that the modulus of elasticity perpendicular to grain is increased. The values given by EN 338 standard are generally safe with the exception of shear strength which is underestimated by current relationships. It is suggested that new relationships have to be provided for heat-treated wood, taking into account the loss of shear resistance
