Are beliefs a matter of taste? A case for Objective Imprecise Information

    Get PDF
We argue, in the spirit of some of Jean-Yves Jaffray's work, that explicitly incorporating the information, however imprecise, available to the decision maker is relevant, feasible, and fruitful. In particular, we show that it can lead us to know whether the decision maker has wrong beliefs and whether it matters or not, that it makes it possible to better model and analyze how the decision maker takes into account new information, even when this information is not an event and finally that it is crucial when attempting to identify and measure the decision maker's attitude toward imprecise information.Decision under uncertainy; Objective Information;Belief Formation;Methodology of Decision Theory

Detection of brown dwarfs by the micro-lensing of unresolved stars

The presence of brown dwarfs in the dark galactic halo could be detected through their gravitational lensing effect and experiments under way monitor about one million stars to observe a few lensing events per year. We show that if the photon flux from a galaxy is measured with a good precision, it is not necessary to resolve the stars and besides more events could be observed.Comment: 14 p., LaTeX, 4 figures available on request, PAR-LPTHE 92 39/LPC 92 1

Beam mismatch effects in Cosmic Microwave Background polarization measurements

    Get PDF
Measurement of cosmic microwave background polarization is today a major goal of observational cosmology. The level of the signal to measure, however, makes it very sensitive to various systematic effects. In the case of Planck, which measures polarization by combining data from various detectors, the beam asymmetry can induce a temperature leakage or a polarization mode mixing. In this paper, we investigate this effect using realistic simulated beams and propose a first-order method to correct the polarization power spectra for the induced systematic effect.Comment: Accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Parallel Position Weight Matrices Algorithms

    Get PDF
International audiencePosition Weight Matrices (PWMs) are broadly used in computational biology. The basic problems, Scan and MultipleScan, aim to find all the occurrences of a given PWM or a set of PWMs in long sequences. Some other PWM tasks share a common NP-hard subproblem, ScoreDistribution. The existing algorithms rely on the enumeration on a large set of scores or words, and they are mostly not suitable for parallelization. We propose a new algorithm, BucketScoreDistribution, that is both very efficient and suitable for parallelization. We bound the error induced by this algorithm. We realized a GPU prototype for Scan, MultipleScan and BucketScoreDistribution with the CUDA libraries, and report for the different problems speedups larger than 10Ă— on several Nvidia cards

Prosper: image and robot-guided prostate brachytherapy

Brachytherapy for localized prostate cancer consists in destroying cancer by introducing iodine radioactive seeds into the gland through hollow needles. The planning of the position of the seeds and their introduction into the prostate is based on intra-operative ultrasound (US) imaging. We propose to optimize the global quality of the procedure by: i) using 3D US; ii) enhancing US data with MRI registration; iii) using a specially designed needle-insertion robot, connected to the imaging data. The imaging methods have been successfully tested on patient data while the robot accuracy has been evaluated on a realistic deformable phantom

    Les Trois-Îlets – Anse à l’Ane

    Get PDF
