Low-Power consumption Franz-Keldysh effect plasmonic modulator
In this paper we report on a low energy consumption CMOS-compatible plasmonic
modulator based on Franz-Keldysh effect in germanium on silicon. We performed
integrated electro-optical simulations in order to optimize the main
characteristics of the modulator. A 3.3 extinction ratio for a 30
long modulator is demonstrated under 3 bias voltage at an operation
wavelength of 1647 . The estimated energy consumption is as low as 20

Spatially uniform enhancement of single quantum dot emission using plasmonic grating decoupler
International audience1 We demonstrate a spatially uniform enhancement of individual quantum dot (QD) fluorescence emission using plasmonic grating decouplers on thin gold or silver films. Individual QDs are deposited within the grating in a controlled way to investigate the position dependency on both the radiation pattern and emission enhancement. We also describe the optimization of the grating decoupler. We achieve a fluorescence enhancement ~3 times higher than using flat plasmon film, for any QD position in the grating. Future optical quantum devices require the development of photonic sources with control of light down to the single photon limit. Excellent examples of single photon emitters are the colloidal nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs) which are considered as the building blocks for future quantum devices such as quantum qubits and quantum cryptographic devices 1,2. The application area of quantum emitters is wide and these applications require control of their emission such as emission rate, polarization, spectral properties, collection efficiency etc. Integration of single molecule or nanocrystals into plasmonic structures has recently proved to be one of the most promising yet challenging ways to control the emission properties at the single photon level 3,
Polarization state of the optical near-field
The polarization state of the optical electromagnetic field lying several
nanometers above complex dielectric structures reveals the intricate
light-matter interaction that occurs in this near-field zone. This information
can only be extracted from an analysis of the polarization state of the
detected light in the near-field. These polarization states can be calculated
by different numerical methods well-suited to near--field optics. In this
paper, we apply two different techniques (Localized Green Function Method and
Differential Theory of Gratings) to separate each polarisation component
associated with both electric and magnetic optical near-fields produced by
nanometer sized objects. The analysis is carried out in two stages: in the
first stage, we use a simple dipolar model to achieve insight into the physical
origin of the near-field polarization state. In the second stage, we calculate
accurate numerical field maps, simulating experimental near-field light
detection, to supplement the data produced by analytical models. We conclude
this study by demonstrating the role played by the near-field polarization in
the formation of the local density of states.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
A periodic modulation of a metallic film which sustains a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is called a plasmonic crystal (PC). In this work, one and two dimensional PC are fabricated by electron beam lithography and characterized by Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope. In the one dimensional case, Plasmonic Bragg Mirrors (PBM) are added first to a metallic film and then to a metallic stripe allowing the deflexion of the SPP propagation with a angle of 90. In the two dimensional case, a triangular lattice of gold bumps is deposited on a metallic film. The interaction of this PC with the SPP is studied for two different incident propagation axes. The photonic band gap effect and the influence of the filling factor are characterized. The guiding mechanisms of the SPP in channel defects opened in PC are explained by means of Ewald constructions and the SPP propagation in channels including bends is observed.DIJON-BU Sciences Economie (212312102) / SudocSudocFranceF

However, in the particular context of optical interconnects, advanced functionalities such as filtering, switching, and routing are required in order to replace in the future the equivalent electronic components which are too much power consumer and also to reduce their footprints. After presenting the interest and limitation of the leakage radiation microscopy method used all along this work, we show several active devices using thermo-sensitive polymers as the dielectric load driven electrically by Joule heating. Then we demonstrate the feasibility of all-optical systems by either doping the dielectric with metallic nanoparticles or by plasmo-thermal eect of a second plasmonic mode providing a localized heating of controlled shape. The dynamic activation of our thermo- optical devices is performed using a homemade fiber-to-fiber setup which allows us to investigate the response time of a plasmo-thermal heating as well as true datacom transmission. Some improvements of the original DLSPPWs performances are proposed by adding a metallic wall on one side of the polymer ridge. This system can act as a compact and athermal polarization converterDIJON-BU Doc.électronique (212319901) / SudocSudocFranceF
