Water and the Rural Poor: Interventions for Improving Livelihoods in Sub-Saharan Africa
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the International Fund for Agricultural development collaborated on this report on water and rural poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. The paper addresses the potential benefits of water initiatives under a livelihood approach, with special consideration to two major recommendations: that investments in water infrastructure must act in concert with political, institutional, market and other related concerns; and that interventions must be context-specific, given the vast heterogeneity in water use and needs among sub-Saharan African rural poor
Properties of galaxies at the faint end of the H luminosity function at
Studies measuring the star formation rate density, luminosity function, and
properties of star-forming galaxies are numerous. However, it exists a gap at
in H-based studies. Our main goal is to study the
properties of a sample of faint H emitters at . We focus on
their contribution to the faint end of the luminosity function and derived star
formation rate density, characterising their morphologies and basic photometric
and spectroscopic properties. We use a narrow-band technique in the
near-infrared, with a filter centred at 1.06 m. The data come from
ultra-deep VLT/HAWK-I observations in the GOODS-S field with a total of 31.9 h
in the narrow-band filter. We perform a visual classification of the sample and
study their morphologies from structural parameters available in CANDELS. Our
28 H-selected sample of faint star-forming galaxies reveals a robust
faint-end slope of the luminosity function . The
derived star formation rate density at is . The sample is
mainly composed of disks, but an important contribution of compact galaxies
with S\'ersic indexes display the highest specific star formation
rates. The luminosity function at from our ultra-deep data points
towards a steeper when an individual extinction correction for each
object is applied. Compact galaxies are low-mass, low-luminosity, and
starburst-dominated objects with a light profile in an intermediate stage from

Understanding complex dynamics by means of an associated Riemann surface
We provide an example of how the complex dynamics of a recently introduced
model can be understood via a detailed analysis of its associated Riemann
surface. Thanks to this geometric description an explicit formula for the
period of the orbits can be derived, which is shown to depend on the initial
data and the continued fraction expansion of a simple ratio of the coupling
constants of the problem. For rational values of this ratio and generic values
of the initial data, all orbits are periodic and the system is isochronous. For
irrational values of the ratio, there exist periodic and quasi-periodic orbits
for different initial data. Moreover, the dependence of the period on the
initial data shows a rich behavior and initial data can always be found such

GoBananas is a start-up company founded by students at Nova SBE's "Entrepreneurship with
Impact" masters program. The company's mission is to make the world a better place through
the creation and sale of banana ice cream popsicles. Because the team was facing numerous
challenges and setbacks over the past year, it had to find creative solutions to break the common
"vicious cycle" faced by many entrepreneurs. This work project details the company's journey
and discusses the strategic decisions of the team to break this vicious entrepreneurial cycle to
make GoBananas a successful venture
The Mediterranean deep-sea fauna: historical evolution, bathymetric variations and geographical changes
The deep-water fauna of the Mediterranean is characterized by an absence of
distinctive characteristics and by a relative impoverishment. Both are a result
of events after the Messinian salinity crisis (Late Miocene). The three main
classes of phenomena involved in producing or recording these effects are
analysed and discussed: - Historical: Sequential faunal changes during the
Pliocene and thereafter in particular those during the Quaternary glaciations
and still in progress. - Bathymetric: Changes in the vertical aspects of the
Bathyal and Abyssal zones that took place under peculiar conditions, i.e.
homothermy, a relative oligotrophy, the barrier of the Gibraltar sill, and
water mass movement. The deeper the habitat of a species in the Mediterranean,
the more extensive is its distribution elsewhere. - Geographical: There are
strong affinities and relationships between Mediterranean and Atlantic faunas.
Endemic species remain a biogeographical problem. Species always become smaller
in size eastward where they occupy a progressively deeper habitat. Thus, the
existing deep Mediterranean Sea appears to be younger than any other deep-sea
constituent of the World Ocean
Characterization of the lncRNA transcriptome in mESC-derived motor neurons: Implications for FUS-ALS
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are currently recognized as crucial players in nervous system development,
function and pathology. In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), identification of causative mutations in FUS
and TDP-43 or hexanucleotide repeat expansion in C9ORF72 point to the essential role of aberrant RNA metabolism
in neurodegeneration. In this study, by taking advantage of an in vitro differentiation system generating
mouse motor neurons (MNs) from embryonic stem cells, we identified and characterized the long non-coding
transcriptome of MNs. Moreover, by using mutant mouse MNs carrying the equivalent of one of the most severe
ALS-associated FUS alleles (P517L), we identified lncRNAs affected by this mutation. Comparative analysis with
humanMNs derived in vitro frominduced pluripotent stemcells indicated that candidate lncRNAs are conserved
between mouse and human. Our work provides a global view of the long non-coding transcriptome of MN, as a
prerequisite toward the comprehension of the still poorly characterized non-coding side ofMNphysiopatholog
