A Very Rare Case of Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting in a Progeria Child

Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, characterized by progressive premature aging and early death in the first or second decade of life, usually secondary to cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction and stroke). We report a case of a 14-year-old boy with progeria syndrome and cardiac arrest due to myocardial infarction, who was submitted to an immediate coronary angiography which revealed left main stem and three-vessel coronary artery disease. A prompt double bypass coronary artery grafting surgery was performed, and, despite successful coronary reperfusion, the patient remained in coma and brain death was declared on fourth day after surgery.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Cryptosporidium oocysts in Ghanaian AIDS patients with diarrhoea

Background: Although Cryptosporidium spp. infections in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients (AIDS) with chronic diarrhoea have been reported in several African countries, there is no information regarding cryptosporidial diarrhoea in Ghanaian AIDS patients. Objective: To investigate the occurrence of C. parvum and other gastrointestinal parasitic agents in Ghanaian AIDS patients with chronic diarrhoea. Design: Prospective study of HIV/AIDS patients with diarrhoea over a nine month period. Setting: Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Korle-Bu Polyclinic Accra, Ghana. Results: Analysis of stool specimens from clinically diagnosed HIV/AIDS (n=2I; mean CD4 count was 288 cells per microliter, 95% confidence interval of 237 to 340 cells per microliter) and HIV-seronegative (n=27) patients revealed C. parvum in six (28.6%) of HIV/AIDS and 10 (37.0%) of the HIV-seronegative patients, respectively. Three other HIV/AIDS cases had other infections involving Strongyloides stercoralis 4.8% (l/21) and Salmonella spp. 9.5% (2/21). There was no concomitant association between C. parvum and any other parasites found. Also, no enterobacteria was found in the HIV-seronegative patients. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the prevalence of Cryptosporidium sp. in both HIV/ AIDS and HIV-seronegative individuals in Ghana. The dynamics of apparent horizons in Robinson-Trautman spacetimes

We present an alternative scheme of finding apparent horizons based on spectral methods applied to Robinson-Trautman spacetimes. We have considered distinct initial data such as representing the spheroids of matter and the head-on collision of two non-rotating black holes. The evolution of the apparent horizon is presented. We have obtained in some cases a mass gap between the final Bondi and apparent horizon masses, whose implications were briefly commented in the light of the thermodynamics of black holes.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

Branched-chain amino acids promote endothelial dysfunction through increased reactive oxygen species generation and inflammation

Branched‐chain amino acids (BCAA: leucine, isoleucine and valine) are essential amino acids implicated in glucose metabolism and maintenance of correct brain function. Elevated BCAA levels can promote an inflammatory response in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. However, there are no studies analysing the direct effects of BCAA on endothelial cells (ECs) and its possible modulation of vascular function. In vitro and ex vivo studies were performed in human ECs and aorta from male C57BL/6J mice, respectively. In ECs, BCAA (6 mmol/L) increased eNOS expression, reactive oxygen species production by mitochondria and NADPH oxidases, peroxynitrite formation and nitrotyrosine expression. Moreover, BCAA induced pro‐inflammatory responses through the transcription factor NF‐κB that resulted in the release of intracellular adhesion molecule‐1 and E‐selectin conferring endothelial activation and adhesion capacity to inflammatory cells. Pharmacological inhibition of mTORC1 intracellular signalling pathway decreased BCAA-induced pro‐oxidant and pro‐inflammatory effects in ECs. In isolated murine aorta, BCAA elicited vasoconstrictor responses, particularly in pre‐contracted vessels and after NO synthase blockade, and triggered endothelial dysfunction, effects that were inhibited by different antioxidants, further demonstrating the potential of BCAA to induce oxidative stress with functional impact. In summary, we demonstrate that elevated BCAA levels generate inflammation and oxidative stress in ECs, thereby facilitating inflammatory cells adhesion and endothelial dysfunction. Development of policies and practices of social responsibility in Portuguese companies: implications of the SA8000 standard

Series: Management and Industrial EngineeringThis study aims to explore the implications of the SA8000 standard in the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies and practices in Portuguese companies. Although this is not a recent issue, it is a subject that has motivated a growing interest on the part of the business and academic community. CSR should be seen as a new business management model, which includes universal human values as well as ethical decisions that ensure the satisfaction of the interests and needs of all stakeholders and the community in general. Regarding the empirical aspect of this research, a qualitative approach was followed through the application of a semi-structured interview to certified and not certified companies by SA8000 standard, in order to understand possible disparities with regard to the implementation of CSR policies and practices. Although the certification is the guarantee of the commitment of the companies with the CSR, the truth is that this is seen by the companies as a form of differentiation in the market. IL-4-secreting CD4+ T cells are crucial to the development of CD8+ T-cell responses against malaria liver stages.

CD4+ T cells are crucial to the development of CD8+ T cell responses against hepatocytes infected with malaria parasites. In the absence of CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells initiate a seemingly normal differentiation and proliferation during the first few days after immunization. However, this response fails to develop further and is reduced by more than 90%, compared to that observed in the presence of CD4+ T cells. We report here that interleukin-4 (IL-4) secreted by CD4+ T cells is essential to the full development of this CD8+ T cell response. This is the first demonstration that IL-4 is a mediator of CD4/CD8 cross-talk leading to the development of immunity against an infectious pathogen

Looking backward: From Euler to Riemann

We survey the main ideas in the early history of the subjects on which Riemann worked and that led to some of his most important discoveries. The subjects discussed include the theory of functions of a complex variable, elliptic and Abelian integrals, the hypergeometric series, the zeta function, topology, differential geometry, integration, and the notion of space. We shall see that among Riemann's predecessors in all these fields, one name occupies a prominent place, this is Leonhard Euler. The Microscopic Origin of Residual Stress for Flat Self-Actuating Piezoelectric Cantilevers

In this study, flat piezoelectric microcantilevers were fabricated under low-stress Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) film conditions. They were analyzed using the Raman spectrum and wafer curvature methods. Based on the residual stress analysis, we found that a thickness of 1 μm was critical, since stress relaxation starts to occur at greater thicknesses, due to surface roughening. The (111) preferred orientation started to decrease when the film thickness was greater than 1 μm. The d33 value was closely related to the stress relaxation associated with the preferred orientation changes. We examined the harmonic response at different PZT cantilever lengths and obtained a 9.4-μm tip displacement at 3 Vp-p at 1 kHz. These analyses can provide a platform for the reliable operation of piezoelectric microdevices, potentially nanodevice when one needs to have simultaneous control of the residual stress and the piezoelectric properties

Cosmology of a Scalar Field Coupled to Matter and an Isotropy-Violating Maxwell Field

Motivated by the couplings of the dilaton in four-dimensional effective actions, we investigate the cosmological consequences of a scalar field coupled both to matter and a Maxwell-type vector field. The vector field has a background isotropy-violating component. New anisotropic scaling solutions which can be responsible for the matter and dark energy dominated epochs are identified and explored. For a large parameter region the universe expands almost isotropically. Using that the CMB quadrupole is extremely sensitive to shear, we constrain the ratio of the matter coupling to the vector coupling to be less than 10^(-5). Moreover, we identify a large parameter region, corresponding to a strong vector coupling regime, yielding exciting and viable cosmologies close to the LCDM limit.Comment: Refs. added, some clarifications.
