    Mineral Nutrient Variations in Soybean (Glycine max ) After Treatment with Exogenous Cobalt

    In this experiment, we tried to explore the changes that are occurring in soybean plants due to the treatment with exogenous cobalt. A  pot culture experiment was conducted and cobalt was given to Soybean (Glycine max) plants by soil drenching method. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, copper, iron, manganese and zinc contents were extracted and estimated from both control and treated plant parts (from roots and shoot). The results showed the low concentrations of cobalt (50 mg kg-1 Co level) in the soil enhanced these parameters while higher concentration (Co level (100-200 mg kg-1) in the soil) didn’t show any significant effect.Â&nbsp

    Analysis of prescription pattern of antihypertensives in various stages of chronic kidney disease

    Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an emerging health problem and is one of the major causes of mortality. Hypertension is closely linked with CKD and both these conditions cause severe cardiovascular events. Hence blood pressure control is pertinent in all stages of CKD. This plays a major role in preventing its progression to end stage kidney disease and death. The objectives of the study were to analyse the class, dosing schedule of antihypertensive prescribed in Chronic Kidney Disease and the incidence of monotherapy and combination therapy.Methods: This study designed as a cross sectional study was conducted in Nephrology department of a tertiary care center and antihypertensive prescription pattern of 364 CKD patients was analyzed. Demographic details, the co-morbid factors and the details of drugs received by each patient were recorded from their outpatient/ inpatient charts. Data collected were entered in MS excel sheet and descriptive analysis done using SPSS software.Results: Calcium Channel Blocker (CCB) was the most commonly prescribed antihypertensive (70.6%) in all stages and the most common CCB was Cilnidipine (54%) with the dosing schedule of 20mg twice daily (56.4%). Incidence of combination therapy was 71.7% and CCB+AA (Alpha agonist) was the commonest combination prescribed in all stages except stage 1.Conclusions: CCBSs were widely prescribed as antihypertensive in CKD irrespective of the stages. Cilnidpine was the routinely prescribed CCB and seemed to be well tolerated by the patients. The protocol followed in this tertiary care center was in accordance with the standard guidelines by Kidney Disease Improving Global outcomes 2012

    Pharmacological evaluation of substituted 4, 5-diphenyl furan-3-carboxamide compound for antidepressant activity in mice

    Background: Depressive disorder is a prevalent psychiatric disorder, which affects 21% of the world population. Many drugs are available as effective antidepressants. But still there is necessity of developing novel compounds with minimized side effects. Hence this study was aimed to investigate the antidepressant activity of novel furan compound in albino mice.Methods: Antidepressant activity of novel furan compound was investigated by using forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST) models. Fluoxetine was used as standard drug in this study.Results: It has been observed from our study that medium dose of test compound (10 mg/kg) reduced duration of immobility time to 35 seconds when compared to control group (147 seconds) in FST model. In TST model, the test compound of medium dose (10 mg/kg) had produced 83% protection against passive behaviour which is almost similar to standard drug fluoxetine (100%).Conclusions: The results of the specifies that compared to other two doses of test compound (5 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg), medium dose of test compound found as an effective dose for treating depression produced due to stress. However, further expansion of the study is needed for this compound to prove as a novel effective antidepressant compared to other drugs available for treating depression

    Ultrasonic Examination of Thin Walled Stainless Steel Tubes by Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique

    The objective of Nondestructive Testing (NDT) is to detect flaws in the components, and characterize them by their size, shape, orientation etc. so that decision on fitness for service of the components can be made. In the case of thin walled tubes, ultrasonic or eddy current examination is generally performed for detection of defects. During the inspection of thin walled stainless steel tubes used in nuclear application, defect indications were obtained by eddy current examination in two of the tubes. From the eddy current examination results, accurate sizing and orientation of these defects could not be determined. Hence a complementary inspection method was required for better characterisation of defects in the two tubes. Even though ultrasonic testing is a most promising technique for detection and characterization of defects, the interpretation of results with A-scan presentation, relies heavily on the skill and experience of the operator performing the test, which comes only by extensive training [1]. This problem is still complicated in the case of thin walled tubes since resolution achievable is poor due to small wall thickness and diameter, and also due to poor signal-to-noise ratio obtainable from fine size defects

    Report on a stranded sea cow, Dugong dugon in the Gulf of Mannar coast

    On 31 March 2019, an adult dead female sea cow (Dugong dugon) measuring more than three meters of total length got stranded along the Gulf of Mannar coast at Gandhi Nagar, Mandapam, Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu (09┬║ 27' 6658'' N; 79┬║ 15' 0459'' E). The morphometric details of the female whale that was weighing approximately 350 kg is given in Table 1. The specimen had relatively robust body with loss of almost one third of the ventral skin along with blubber from the thoracic and abdominal region of the body. There were significant cut wounds present on the dorsal as well as lateral sides of the body. The internal organs did not reveal any significant abnormalities for the cause of death. Based on the body condition and external injuries it can be concluded that the cause of death might be due to attempted hunting. Dugongs fall in schedule 1 of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act whose hunting is banned and poachers are liable for punishment

    Suitability of Killai backwaters for prawn farming-a preliminary micro level survey

    Brackishwater areas have been given much importance for prawn farming. No information was available on the Killai backwaters about factors like water quality, topography, contour, extent of the area, tidal amplitude, seed potential and possibilities of flooding etc. Hence during 1982-'84 Klllai area was thoroughly surveyed on the above aspects and the results have been discussed in this paper. From this it is inferred that a total area of about 155 ha is readily available for undertaking both pond and pen culture in this backwater

    Structure Property Correlation in Ultrafine Grained Copper Processed by Equal Channel Angular Processing

    Ultra fine grained copper is produced by equal channel angular processing (ECAP) routes.Multiple passing through the ECAP die reveals high grain refinement in first few passes.Transmission electron microscopies in to the samples reveal a grain refinement of 150 ╬╝m to 500 nm sized grains after 4 passes. Mechanical properties measuerement shows that the severe plastic deformation has improved the structural strength to 410 MPa. Structure property study confirms the Hall petch strengthening mechanism operational during the deformation process. The effect of initial microstructral inhomogeniety is investigated and it is found to have marginal influence in the grain refinement of the multiple pass ECAP. Process modeling study using finite element models reveal the developed shear strain and stress fields during the deformtion process

    A spectroscopic study of the hybrid pulsator Gamma Pegasi

    The recent detection of both pressure and high-order gravity modes in the classical B-type pulsator Gamma Pegasi offers promising prospects for probing its internal structure through seismic studies. To aid further modelling of this star, we present the results of a detailed NLTE abundance analysis based on a large number of time-resolved, high-quality spectra. A chemical composition typical of nearby B-type stars is found. The hybrid nature of this star is consistent with its location in the overlapping region of the instability strips for beta Cephei and slowly pulsating B stars computed using OP opacity tables, although OPAL calculations may also be compatible with the observations once the uncertainties in the stellar parameters and the current limitations of the stability calculations are taken into account. The two known frequencies f1 = 6.58974 and f2 = 0.68241 c/d are detected in the spectroscopic time series. A mode identification is attempted for the low-frequency signal, which can be associated to a high-order g -mode. Finally, we re-assess the binary status of Gamma Peg and find no evidence for variations that can be ascribed to orbital motion, contrary to previous claims in the literature.Comment: 28 pages, 16 figure
