    Final draft post refereeing.Includes bibliographical references.Heterogeneous parallel and distributed computing systems may operate in an environment where certain system performance features degrade due to unpredictable circumstances. Robustness can be defined as the degree to which a system can function correctly in the presence of parameter values different from those assumed. This work develops a model for quantifying robustness in a dynamic heterogeneous computing environment where task execution time estimates are known to contain errors. This mathematical expression of robustness is then applied to two different problem environments.     Structural comparison of a 15 residue peptide from the V3 loop of HIV-1IIIb and an O-glycosylated analogue

    AbstractAs part of a program to study the effect of glycosylation on the three-dimensional structures of HIV-1IIIB V3 peptide constructs, we have examined the solution structures of a 15 residue peptide (RIQRGPGRAFVTIGK, P18IIIB), originally mapped as an epitope recognized by CD8+ Dd class I MHC-restricted murine cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTL), and an analogue (P18IIIB-g), O-glycosylated with an α-galactosamine on Thr-12, using NMR, circular dichroism and molecular modeling methods. Our studies show that the peptides sample mainly random conformations in aqueous solution near 25°C and become more ordered by the addition of trifluoroethanol. Upon decreasing the temperature to 5°C, a reverse turn is formed around the immunodominant tip (G5−R8). Glycosylation on T12 ‘tightens’ the turn slightly as suggested by NOE and CD analysis. In addition, the sugar has a defined conformation with respect to the peptide backbone and influences the local peptide conformation. These data suggest that simple glycosylation may influence the conformational equilibrium of a V3 peptide which contains a domain critical for antibody recognition and virus neutralization. We also show that the ability of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTL) to lyse tumor cells presenting P18IIIB was completely abrogated by threonine glycosylation

    Off-World Mental Health:Considerations for the Design of Well-being-Supportive Technologies for Deep Space Exploration

    During future long-duration space exploration missions, humans will be exposed to combinations of extreme physical, psychological, and interpersonal demands. These demands create risks for the safety, performance, health, and well-being of both individuals and crew. The communication latency in deep space means that explorers will increasingly have to operate independently and take responsibility for their own self-care and self-management. At present, several research programs are focused on developing and testing digital technologies and countermeasures that support the effective functioning of deep space crews. Although promising, these initiatives have been stimulated mostly by technological opportunity rather than cogent theory. In this perspective, we argue that digital technologies developed for spaceflight should be informed by well-being–supportive design principles and be cognizant of broader conversations around the development and use of digital health applications, especially pertaining to issues of autonomy, privacy, and trust. These issues are important for designing potentially mission-critical health technologies and may be determining factors in the safe and successful completion of future off-world endeavors.publishedVersio

    Massard Prairie Restoration and Soil Microbiome Succession

    We have initially sequenced soil microbial DNA from 4 restored and 4 virgin tallgrass prairie soil samples from Ben Geren Park and Massard Prairie (Fort Smith, AR), respectively. As expected, the soil microbiomes are distinct, with several lineages of nitrogen-fixing bacteria more common in virgin tall grass prairie. However, we predict that as restoration of tallgrass prairie in Ben Geren Park progresses, the soil microbiome of restored prairie will more closely mirror those of the virgin prairie

    Short Term Development and Fate of MGE-Like Neural Progenitor Cells in Jaundiced and Non-Jaundiced Rat Brain

One of the most debilitating symptoms of kernicterus is dystonia, which results from bilirubin toxicity to the globus pallidus (GP). Stem cell transplantation into the GP to replace lost neurons and restore basal ganglia circuits function is a potential therapeutic strategy to treat dystonia in kernicterus. In this study we transplanted human medial ganglionic eminence (MGE)-like neural progenitor cells (NPCs) that we differentiated into a primarily gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic phenotype, into the GP of non-immunosuppressed jaundiced (jj) and non-jaundiced (Nj) rats. We assessed the survival and development of graft cells at three time-points post-transplantation. While grafted MGE-like NPCs survived and generated abundant fibers in both jj and Nj brains, NPC survival was greater in the jj brain. These results were consistent with our previous finding that excitatory spinal interneuron-like NPCs exhibited a higher survival rate in the jj brain than in the Nj brain. Our findings further support our hypothesis that slightly elevated bilirubin levels in the jj brain served as an antioxidant and immunosuppressant to protect the transplanted cells. We also identified graft fibers growing toward brain regions that receive projections from the GP, as well as host fibers extending toward the graft.     The Impact of Aquatic Based Plyometric Training on Jump Performance: A Critical Review

    International Journal of Exercise Science 14(6): 815-828, 2021. There is evidence to suggest that aquatic plyometric training (APT) may be an effective and safer alternative to traditional land-based plyometric training (LPT) when training to increase jump performance. The aim of this review was to critically examine the current literature regarding the effects of APT vs. LPT on jump performance in athletic populations. Key terms were employed in five separate databases to complete the current review. Available articles were screened for inclusion and exclusion criteria to determine which studies were deemed eligible for review. Outcome measure in these studies included those assessing lower extremity power and jump performance (i.e., drop jumps, broad jumps, sergeant jumps, repeated countermovement jumps, and vertical jumps). All but one of the studies included in this critical review showed significant improvements in jump performance after LPT and APT interventions. Both LPT and APT groups experienced similar increases in jump performance and lower-body power, pre- to post-test, in the majority of the studies examined in this review. LPT and APT have the ability to improve lower extremity explosive strength and jump performance within athletic populations. Improvements in lower body power may improve overall athletic performance. Observations from this review may be used by sport coaches, strength coaches, and athletes alike to weigh the pros and cons of both forms of plyometric training. Observations from this review may also be used to weigh the pros and cons of APT over LPT in terms of reducing risk of injury
