    On the Road to Sustainability? A Review of a Half-Century of Biodiversity Conservation Successes in Nepal and Some Thoughts on Future Needs

    We review the history, over the past half-century, of biodiversity conservation legislation and programs in Nepal. We especially consider how they have evolved in light of some earlier concerns resulting from, for example, the strict “fines and fences” conservation approaches first implemented in the 1970s, to pressing issues that emerged over time such as park-people and wildlife-human conflicts, poaching and illegal wildlife trade. We also consider how the implementation of international conservation agreements and demographic and political changes have affected conservation programs in Nepal. We finish by discussing conservation in the context of sustainable development and conclude with some thoughts on future research and managerial needs in a rapidly-changing world

    Vegetation dynamics and their implications for the management of wetlands in the lowlands of Nepal

    The maintenance of species richness is often a priority in the management of nature reserves, where consumptive use of resources is generally prohibited. The purpose of this research was to improve management by understanding the vegetation dynamics in the lowlands of Nepal. The objectives were to determine vegetation associations in relation to environments and human-induced disturbances that affect vegetation dynamics on floodplains, where upstream barrages had altered flooding patterns, and consumptive use of plant resources was influencing natural processes. Floodplain vegetation in relation to physical environments and disturbances were studied along transects, perpendicular to the course of the Mahakali River in the western Terai, Nepal. Forest structural changes were studied for three years in ten plots. A randomized split-block experiment with nine burning and grazing treatments was performed in seasonally flooded grasslands. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to assess people\u27s socio-economic status, natural resource use patterns and conservation attitudes. Elevation, soil organic matter, nitrogen, percentage of sand and grazing intensity were significant in delineating herbaceous vegetation assemblages, whereas elevation and livestock grazing were significant in defining forest type boundaries. On the floodplain islands, highly grazed Dalbergia sissoo-Acacia catechu forests were devoid of understory woody vegetation, but the lightly grazed D. sissoo-mixed forests had a well-developed second canopy layer, comprising woody species other than D. sissoo and A. catechu. In grasslands, species richness and biomass production were highest at intermediate disturbance level represented by the lightly grazed and ungrazed early-burned treatments. Ethnicity, education and resource use patterns were important in influencing conservation attitudes. A succession towards the mixed forests would occur in D. sissoo-dominated floodplain forests, where dams and barrages reduce flooding and associated fluvial processes, and if livestock grazing is stopped, as occasionally suggested by nature conservationists. In seasonally flooded grasslands, early burning with moderate grazing would enhance the species diversity and productivity. There is a need to implement a participatory integrated wetland management plan, to include community development, education and off farm income generation, to assure participatory conservation and management of wetlands in Nepal

    Effect of Excess Consumption of Caffeine on Cardiovascular Status

    Objective:This study was done to find whether excess consumption of caffeine containing beverage and other product on daily bases really have bad effect on our cardiovascular system or not . Method: All volunteer were divided into two groups depending on number of cups of coffee or other caffeine containing beverages and chocolates consumed by them. Group 1 was habitual drinkers and Group 2 was non-habitual drinkers. Then their basal HR, SBP and DBP were recorded and compared. Then same parameters were recorded at various time intervals after Queens College Step Test to find the recovery time of cardiovascular system.Result: There were no significant difference in mean basal HR, SBD and DBP between the groups. HR, SBP and DBP were almost same at various time interval after Queens College Step Test, except at time interval 5 sec. – 20 sec. where DBP was significantly higher in habitual caffeine drinkers compared to non habitual caffeine drinkers.Conclusion: From this study it has been concluded that caffeine doesn’t causes any harmful effect on cardiovascular system

    Correlation of hs-CRP with environmental risk factors of nephropathy in type 2 diabetes

    The objective of the present study was to investigate the association of hs-CRP levels with environmental risk factors of diabetic nephropathy like smoking, drinking alcohol, diet, age of diabetic patient, duration of diabetes, medication of diabetes, and blood pressure medication. A hospital-based quantitative study was conducted at the Department of Clinical Biochemistry of Manipal Teaching Hospital (MTH) Pokhara, Nepal, with 89 patients suffering from type 2 diabetes. Blood samples (n=89) from the patients were collected and the serums were separated. On the other hand, data on environmental risk factors of nephropathy were collected by using standard questionnaire. In this study, serum hs-CRP level was not found to be correlated with smoking (p=0.111), alcohol consumption (p=0.722), diet (p=0.496), duration of diabetes (p=0.519), age of diabetic patient (p=0.369), medication of diabetes (p=0.734), and blood pressure medication (p=0.625). Hence, our study concludes that serum hs-CRP value in type 2 diabetic patients is insignificantly correlated with the risk factors especially smoking, drinking alcohol, diet, duration of diabetes, age of diabetic patient, medication of diabetes, and medication of blood pressure

    Ectonucleotide pyrophosphate phosphodiesterase type II (ENPP2), also known as Autotaxin (ATX), is an enzyme present in blood circulation that converts lysophosphatidyl choline (LPC) to lysophosphatidic acid (LPA). While LPA has been demonstrated to play diverse roles in skeletal myogenesis, mainly through in vitro studies, the role of ENPP2 in skeletal myogenesis has not been determined. We previously found that Enpp2 is induced by a positive WNT/β-Catenin signaling regulator, R-spondin2 (RSPO2), in C2C12 myoblast cells. As RSPO2 promotes myogenic differentiation via the WNT/β-Catenin signaling pathway, we hypothesized that ENPP2 may act as a key mediator for the crosstalk between WNT and LPA signaling during myogenic differentiation. Herein, we found that ENPP2 function is essential for myogenic differentiation in C2C12 cells. Pharmacological ENPP2 inhibitors or RNAi-mediated Enpp2 gene knockdown severely impaired the myogenic differentiation, including the cell fusion process, whereas administration of the recombinant ENPP2 protein enhanced myogenic differentiation. Consistent with the in vitro results, mice lacking the Enpp2 gene showed a disrupted muscle regeneration after acute muscle injury. The size of newly regenerated myofibers in Enpp2 mutant muscle was significantly reduced compared with wild-type regenerated muscle. Modified expression patterns of myogenic markers in Enpp2 mutant muscle further emphasized the impaired muscle regeneration process. Finally, we convincingly demonstrate that the Enpp2 gene is a direct transcriptional target for WNT/β-Catenin signaling. Functional TCF/LEF1 binding sites within the upstream region of Enpp2 gene were identified by chromatin immunoprecipitation using anti-β-Catenin antibodies and reporter assay. Our study reveals that ENPP2 is regulated by WNT/β-Catenin signaling and plays a key positive role in myogenic differentiation
