    Hyperparathyroidism and hyperfunctioning supernumary glands : considerations for challenging management [abstract]

    Hyperparathyroidism can be treated surgically with high success rates. While the majority of patients have four glands, the presence of a supernumerary gland may be encountered as a normal anatomic variant in up to 13% of the population. Supernumerary glands are occasionally involved in primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism. The presence of these glands often complicates management and represents a diagnostic dilemma to the surgeon. We report a case of persistent hyperparathyroidism resulting from an adenomatous supernumerary parathyroid gland located in the mediastinum. An extensive literature review was performed and the authors discuss considerations regarding the challenging management of these glands

    Specification of high-level application programming interfaces (SemSorGrid4Env)

    This document defines an Application Tier for the SemsorGrid4Env project. Within the Application Tier we distinguish between Web Applications - which provide a User Interface atop a more traditional Service Oriented Architecture - and Mashups which are driven by a REST API and a Resource Oriented Architecture. A pragmatic boundary is set to enable initial development of Web Applications and Mashups; as the project progresses an evaluation and comparison of the two paradigms may lead to a reassessment of where each can be applied within the project, with the experience gained providing a basis for general guidelines and best practice. Both Web Applications and Mashups are designed and delivered through an iterative user-centric process; requirements generated by the project case studies are a key element of this approach

    Implementation and Deployment of a Library of the High-level Application Programming Interfaces (SemSorGrid4Env)

    The high-level API service is designed to support rapid development of thin web applications and mashups beyond the state of the art in GIS, while maintaining compatibility with existing tools and expectations. It provides a fully configurable API, while maintaining a separation of concerns between domain experts, service administrators and mashup developers. It adheres to REST and Linked Data principles, and provides a novel bridge between standards-based (OGC O&M) and Semantic Web approaches. This document discusses the background motivations for the HLAPI (including experiences gained from any previously implemented versions), before moving onto specific details of the final implementation, including configuration and deployment instructions, as well as a full tutorial to assist mashup developers with using the exposed observation data

    The effects of Energised Greens™ upon blood acid-base balance during resting conditions

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The consumption of fresh fruit & vegetable in concentrate form (FVC) have recently become an alternative approach to combating excessive renal acid loads often associated with <it>Western Diets</it>. Additionally, these FVC's have been purported to induce metabolic alkalosis, which perhaps may enhance the blood buffering capacity of an individual. Therefore, the aim of this preliminary study was to profile the acid-base response after ingestion of an acute dose of fruit and vegetable extract (Energised Greens™ (EG), Nottingham, UK) and compare it to a standard, low dose (0.1 g·kg<sup>-1</sup>) of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO<sub>3</sub>).</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>As part of a randomized, cross over design participants consumed 750 mL of water with either 9 g of EG (manufacturer recommendations), 0.1 g·kg<sup>-1 </sup>of NaHCO<sub>3 </sub>or a placebo (plain flour) in opaque encapsulated pills following an overnight fast. Capillary samples were obtained and analyzed every 15 min for a period of 120 min following ingestion. Significant interactions (p < 0.01), main effects for condition (p < 0.001) and time (p < 0.001) were evident for all acid-base variables (pH, HCO<sub>3<sup>-</sup></sub>, BE). Interactions indicated significant elevation in blood alkalosis for only the NaHCO<sub>3 </sub>condition when compared to both placebo and EG from 15 to 120 minutes.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Despite previous findings of elevated blood pH following acute mineral supplementation, manufacturer recommended doses of EG do not induce any significant changes in acid-base regulation in resting males.</p

    Creating Capacity for Research Data Services at Regional Universities: A Case Study

    Understanding the processes of research design and of data collection, organization, storage, preservation, and sharing is critical to the success of any project, regardless of the scope of the research. From research design and conceptualization to the potential sharing of data with other researchers for replicability, as well as preserving data for the benefit of the wider research community, unique challenges, as well as opportunities for research data management (RDM) and research data services (RDS) teams, are presented; these include problems, issues, and concerns regarding how to prepare a data management plan (DMP) and how to manage data collection, analysis, storage, and preservation. In response to these concerns, academic institutions typically have structured RDS for students and faculty through the support of many stakeholders: academic librarians who are familiar with the disciplinary resources and have skills in archives, data curation, and institutional repositories; information technology services staff who provide solutions to infrastructure issues regarding storage and archiving; and other campus research administration entities that deal with the funding, integrity, and administration aspects of the research
