Order statistic filters for image matching

The rank and census are two filters based on order statistics which have been applied to the image matching problem for stereo pairs. Advantages of these filters include their robustness to radiometric distortion and small amounts of random noise, and their amenability to hardware implementation. In this paper, a new matching algorithm is presented, which provides an overall framework for matching, and is used to compare the rank and census techniques with standard matching metrics. The algorithm was tested using both real stereo pairs and a synthetic pair with ground truth. The rank and census filters were shown to significantly improve performance in the case of radiometric distortion. In all cases, the results obtained were comparable to, if not better than, those obtained using standard matching metrics. Furthermore, the rank and census have the additional advantage that their computational overhead is less than these metrics. For all techniques tested, the difference between the results obtained for the synthetic stereo pair, and the ground truth results was small

While still in the midst of their study abroad experiences, students at Linfield College write reflective essays. Their essays address issues of cultural similarity and difference, compare lifestyles, mores, norms, and habits between their host countries and home, and examine changes in perceptions about their host countries and the United States. In this essay, Jasmine Schmit describes her observations during her study abroad program at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea

Pattern Research Project: An Investigation of The Pattern And Printing Process - Layers Vineyard

2017 Pattern Research Project Jasmine Zheng - Layers Vineyard The Pattern Research Project involves research and analysis of contemporary patterns found in the textiles and wallcoverings of the built interior environment. Patterns use motif, repetition, color, geometry, craft, technology, and space to communicate place, time, and concept. Through this research and analysis, built environments - their designers, occupants, construction, and context - can be better understood. Jasmine Zheng, VCU Interior Design BFA 2020, selected the “Layers Vineyard” pattern by Hella Jongerius for Maraham for the 2017 Pattern Research Project. The text below is excerpted from the student’s work: “This was made by Hella Jongerius for a company called Maraham. They reached out to her searching to create an upholstery textile. They wanted something that would flow seamlessly into each other for several meters of repeat. The pattern that I picked was one of three different patterns in the series called Layers. For this textile, Hella Jongerius and Maharam Design Studio came up with a way to bind multiple layers of wool felt with embroidery. The methods that she used were based off research that she conducted on the basis of needle-punched felt panels that she made as a guest curator at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in 2005, and as an installation at Villa Noailles, the Robert Mallet-Stevens house in Hyeres, France.”https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/prp/1010/thumbnail.jp

    The Prominence of Pippin

When building a fictional world as involved and vast as that of J.R.R. Tolkien’s multiple drafts are a must in order to work out the exact details and to make sure that all the possible loose ends are tied up and addressed. Characters can come and go, change in temperaments and in how involved they are when it comes to the story itself. Whereas some characters may start of as highly involved in the plot, they may become nothing other than a supporting character after going through multiple drafting processes. For other characters, however, they may start as a walk-on/walk-off character, acting as nothing more than a device to help the story move along, but then end up becoming a highly important and involved character, detrimental to the good of the story’s outcome. With the vast amount of drafts Tolkien created for the series, his characters were no less subject to the process of creation. As The Lord of the Rings series underwent its development, Pippin grew substantially in his prominence, though his journey of development has different points of emphasis on it when Tolkien’s books and Peter Jackson’s movie adaptations are compared. Through both types of media, Pippin starts off the story as a foolish side character but then becomes a significant figure in the story who is essential in the society of the Shire and in the preservation of Middle Earth’s history
