    Ternary and quadriphase sequence diffusers

    A room acoustic diffuser breaks up reflected wavefronts, and this can be achieved by presenting a spatially varying surface impedance. In hybrid surfaces, varying impedance is achieved by patches of absorption and reflection, giving reflection coefficients nominally of 0 and 1. These surfaces are hybrids, absorbing some of the incident sound while diffusing any reflected energy. A problem with planar hybrid surfaces is that specular energy is only removed by absorption. By exploiting interference, by reflecting waves out-of-phase with the specular energy, it is possible to diminish the specular energy further. This can be achieved by using a diffuser based on a ternary sequence that nominally has reflection coefficients of 0, -1, and +1. Ternary sequences are therefore a way of forming hybrid absorber-diffusers that achieve better scattering performance without additional absorption. This paper discusses methods for making ternary sequence diffusers, including giving sequence generation methods. It presents prediction results based on Fourier and boundary element method models to examine the performance. While ternary diffusers have better performance than unipolar binary diffusers at most frequencies, there are frequencies at which the performances are the same.     Feature-Specific Information Processing Precedes Concerted Activation in Human Visual Cortex

    Current knowledge about the precise timing of visual input to the cortex relies largely on spike timings in monkeys and evoked-response latencies in humans. However, quantifying the activation onset does not unambiguously describe the timing of stimulus-feature-specific information processing. Here, we investigated the information content of the early human visual cortical activity by decoding low-level visual features from single-trial magnetoencephalographic (MEG) responses. MEG was measured from nine healthy subjects as they viewed annular sinusoidal gratings (spanning the visual field from 2 to 10° for a duration of 1 s), characterized by spatial frequency (0.33 cycles/degree or 1.33 cycles/degree) and orientation (45° or 135°); gratings were either static or rotated clockwise or anticlockwise from 0 to 180°. Time-resolved classifiers using a 20 ms moving window exceeded chance level at 51 ms (the later edge of the window) for spatial frequency, 65 ms for orientation, and 98 ms for rotation direction. Decoding accuracies of spatial frequency and orientation peaked at 70 and 90 ms, respectively, coinciding with the peaks of the onset evoked responses. Within-subject time-insensitive pattern classifiers decoded spatial frequency and orientation simultaneously (mean accuracy 64%, chance 25%) and rotation direction (mean 82%, chance 50%). Classifiers trained on data from other subjects decoded the spatial frequency (73%), but not the orientation, nor the rotation direction. Our results indicate that unaveraged brain responses contain decodable information about low-level visual features already at the time of the earliest cortical evoked responses, and that representations of spatial frequency are highly robust across individuals.Peer reviewe

    The purpose of this study is to determine the perception of students at SDN 164 Pekanbaru toward extra-curricular activities art of Rebana. The activities consist of selection, organization,interpretation .This is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach. The population in this study is female students at SDN 164 Pekanbaru for IV and V grade (140 people) . The sample in this study are 58 people. Sampling in this study using Slovin formula. The instrument in the study is a questionnaire containing 29 items of statements. The answer consists of five alternatives for positive statements Every so Often/strongly agree (SS) given score 5, often/agree (SR/ST) category (score 4), rarely/hesitation (JR/RR) given score 3 (three), a score of 2 (two) is given to less rarely /less agree (JS/TS) and never/disagree (TP/STS) is scored 1 (one). And for negative statements Every so Often/strongly agree (SS) given score 1, often/agree (SR/ST) category (score 2), rarely/hesitation (JR/RR) given score 3 (three), a score of 4 (four) is given to less rarely /less agree (JS/TS) and never/disagree (TP/STS) is scored 5 (five).The results revealed that the perception of students at SDN 164 Pekanbaru toward extra-curricular activities art of Rebana interm of Selection is 55,15% of the respondents answer score 4 and 5 ,2. Organization is 72,76% of respondents answer score 4 and 5, 3. interpretation is 66,82% of the respondent. It means that the Perception of students at SDN 164 Pekanbaru toward extra-curricular activities art of Rebana is good

    Amplification of real-time high resolution melting analysis PCR method for polycystic kidney disease (PKD) gene mutations in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease patients

    PKD1 and PKD2 are the two genes responsible for the development of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). PKD1 gene mutations accounts for ≈85% of all ADPKD cases, while the remaining ≈15% of cases is caused by mutations in the PKD2 gene. Genotyping for PKD1 and PKD2 mutations was usually identified using conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or PCR-single stranded conformation polymorphisms (SSCP) methods. In this study, we assessed the usefulness of eight common primers amplifying the respective genes in real-time high resolution melting analysis PCR (real-time HRMA PCR) in terms of time, cost and sensitivity with respect to PCR-SSCP method. We found that case sample can easily be differentiated from control sample by melting curve profile difference, although a primer was found to be less useful. We concluded that real-time HRMA PCR is a rapid and sensitive method to categorize samples based on the melting curve profiles with comparable sensitivity to conventional PCR-SSCP.Key words: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), real-time PCR, high resolution melting analysis, PKD1, PKD2

    Permeation of the three aromatic dipeptides through lipid bilayers: Experimental and computational study

All online versions of the article were corrected on 28 June 2016; the article is correct as it appears in the printed version of the journal."The time-resolved parallel artificial membrane permeability assay with fluorescence detection and comprehensive computer simulations are used to study the passive permeation of three aromatic dipeptides—N-acetyl-phenylalanineamide (NAFA), N-acetyltyrosineamide (NAYA), and N-acetyltryptophanamide (NATA) through a 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospocholine (DOPC) lipid bilayer. Measured permeation times and permeability coefficients show fastest translocation for NAFA, slowest for NAYA, and intermediate for NATA under physiological temperature and pH. Computationally, we perform umbrella sampling simulations to model the structure, dynamics, and interactions of the peptides as a function of z, the distance from lipid bilayer. The calculated profiles of the potential of mean force show two strong effects—preferential binding of each of the three peptides to the lipid interface and large free energy barriers in the membrane center. We use several approaches to calculate the position-dependent translational diffusion coefficients D(z), including one based on numerical solution the Smoluchowski equation. Surprisingly, computed D(z) values change very little with reaction coordinate and are also quite similar for the three peptides studied. In contrast, calculated values of sidechain rotational correlation times τrot(z) show extremely large changes with peptide membrane insertion—values become 100 times larger in the headgroup region and 10 times larger at interface and in membrane center, relative to solution. The peptides’ conformational freedom becomes systematically more restricted as they enter the membrane, sampling α and ÎČ and C7eq basins in solution, α and C7eq at the interface, and C7eq only in the center. Residual waters of solvation remain around the peptides even in the membrane center. Overall, our study provides an improved microscopic understanding of passive peptide permeation through membranes, especially on the sensitivity of rotational diffusion to position relative to the bilayer.     Collaborative Gaze Channelling for Improved Cooperation During Robotic Assisted Surgery

    The use of multiple robots for performing complex tasks is becoming a common practice for many robot applications. When different operators are involved, effective cooperation with anticipated manoeuvres is important for seamless, synergistic control of all the end-effectors. In this paper, the concept of Collaborative Gaze Channelling (CGC) is presented for improved control of surgical robots for a shared task. Through eye tracking, the fixations of each operator are monitored and presented in a shared surgical workspace. CGC permits remote or physically separated collaborators to share their intention by visualising the eye gaze of their counterparts, and thus recovers, to a certain extent, the information of mutual intent that we rely upon in a vis-à-vis working setting. In this study, the efficiency of surgical manipulation with and without CGC for controlling a pair of bimanual surgical robots is evaluated by analysing the level of coordination of two independent operators. Fitts' law is used to compare the quality of movement with or without CGC. A total of 40 subjects have been recruited for this study and the results show that the proposed CGC framework exhibits significant improvement (p<0.05) on all the motion indices used for quality assessment. This study demonstrates that visual guidance is an implicit yet effective way of communication during collaborative tasks for robotic surgery. Detailed experimental validation results demonstrate the potential clinical value of the proposed CGC framework. © 2012 Biomedical Engineering Society.link_to_subscribed_fulltex

    Stand dynamics modulate water cycling and mortality risk in droughted tropical forest

The final version is available from Wiley via the DOI in this record.Transpiration from the Amazon rainforest generates an essential water source at a global and local scale. However, changes in rainforest function with climate change can disrupt this process, causing significant reductions in precipitation across Amazonia, and potentially at a global scale. We report the only study of forest transpiration following a long-term (>10 year) experimental drought treatment in Amazonian forest. After 15 years of receiving half the normal rainfall, drought-related tree mortality caused total forest transpiration to decrease by 30%. However, the surviving droughted trees maintained or increased transpiration because of reduced competition for water and increased light availability, which is consistent with increased growth rates. Consequently, the amount of water supplied as rainfall reaching the soil and directly recycled as transpiration increased to 100%. This value was 25% greater than for adjacent nondroughted forest.
