Cross section ratio and angular distributions of the reaction p + d -> 3He + eta at 48.8 MeV and 59.8 MeV excess energy
We present new data for angular distributions and on the cross section ratio
of the p + d -> 3He + eta reaction at excess energies of Q = 48.8 MeV and Q =
59.8 MeV. The data have been obtained at the WASA-at-COSY experiment
(Forschungszentrum J\"ulich) using a proton beam and a deuterium pellet target.
While the shape of obtained angular distributions show only a slow variation
with the energy, the new results indicate a distinct and unexpected total cross
section fluctuation between Q = 20 MeV and Q = 60 MeV, which might indicate the
variation of the production mechanism within this energy interval.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
Controlled growth of hexagonal gold nanostructures during thermally induced self-assembling on Ge(001) surface
Nano-sized gold has become an important material in various fields of science and technology, where control over the size and crystallography is desired to tailor the functionality. Gold crystallizes in the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase, and its hexagonal closed packed (hcp) structure is a very unusual and rare phase. Stable Au hcp phase has been reported to form in nanoparticles at the tips of some Ge nanowires. It has also recently been synthesized in the form of thin graphene-supported sheets which are unstable under electron beam irradiation. Here, we show that stable hcp Au 3D nanostructures with well-defined crystallographic orientation and size can be systematically created in a process of thermally induced self-assembly of thin Au layer on Ge(001) monocrystal. The Au hcp crystallite is present in each Au nanostructure and has been characterized by different electron microscopy techniques. We report that a careful heat treatment above the eutectic melting temperature and a controlled cooling is required to form the hcp phase of Au on a Ge single crystal. This new method gives scientific prospects to obtain stable Au hcp phase for future applications in a rather simple manner as well as redefine the phase diagram of Gold with Germanium
Neutron-Proton Scattering in the Context of the (2380) Resonance
New data on quasifree polarized neutron-proton scattering, in the region of
the recently observed resonance structure, have been obtained by
exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements with WASA at
COSY. This paper details the determination of the beam polarization, checks of
the quasifree character of the scattering process, on all obtained
angular distributions and on the new partial-wave analysis, which includes the
new data producing a resonance pole in the - coupled partial
waves at () MeV -- in accordance with the dibaryon
resonance hypothesis. The effect of the new partial-wave solution on the
description of total and differential cross section data as well as specific
combinations of spin-correlation and spin-transfer observables available from
COSY-ANKE measurements at = 2.27 GeV is discussed
Measurement of the Reaction in Search for the Recently Observed Resonance Structure in and systems
Exclusive measurements of the quasi-free reaction have
been performed by means of collisions at = 1.2 GeV using the WASA
detector setup at COSY. Total and differential cross sections have been
obtained covering the energy region = (2.35 - 2.46) GeV, which
includes the region of the ABC effect and its associated resonance structure.
No ABC effect, {\it i.e.} low-mass enhancement is found in the
-invariant mass spectrum -- in agreement with the constraint from
Bose statistics that the isovector pion pair can not be in relative s-wave. At
the upper end of the covered energy region -channel processes for Roper,
and excitations provide a reasonable description
of the data, but at low energies the measured cross sections are much larger
than predicted by such processes. Adding a resonance amplitude for the
resonance at =~2.37 GeV with =~70 MeV and observed
recently in and reactions leads to an
agreement with the data also at low energies
Evidence for a New Resonance from Polarized Neutron-Proton Scattering
Exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of
quasifree polarized scattering have been performed in the energy
region of the narrow resonance structure with , 2380 MeV/ and 70 MeV observed recently in the
double-pionic fusion channels and .
The experiment was carried out with the WASA detector setup at COSY having a
polarized deuteron beam impinged on the hydrogen pellet target and utilizing
the quasifree process . That way the
analyzing power was measured over a large angular range. The obtained
angular distributions deviate systematically from the current SAID SP07
NN partial-wave solution. Incorporating the new data into the SAID
analysis produces a pole in the waves as expected from the
resonance hypothesis
Search for the eta-mesic 4He with WASA-at-COSY detector
An exclusive measurement of the excitation function for the dd->3Heppi-
reaction was performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY-Juelich with the
WASA-at-COSY detection system. The data were taken during a slow acceleration
of the beam from 2.185 GeV/c to 2.400 GeV/c crossing the kinematic threshold
for the eta meson production in the dd->4He-eta reaction at 2.336 GeV/c. The
corresponding excess energy with respect to the 4He-eta system varied from
-51.4MeV to 22MeV. The integrated luminosity in the experiment was determined
using the dd->3Hen reaction. The shape of the excitation function for the
dd->3Heppi- was examined. No signal of the 4He-eta bound state was observed. An
upper limit for the cross-section for the bound state formation and decay in
the process dd->(4He-eta)bound->3Heppi- was determined on the 90% confidence
level and it varies from 20nb to 27nb for the bound state width ranging from
5MeV to 35MeV, respectively.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
Search for a dark photon in the decay
The presently world largest data sample of pi0 --> gamma e+e- decays
containing nearly 5E5 events was collected using the WASA detector at COSY. A
search for a dark photon U produced in the pi0 --> gamma U --> gamma e+e- decay
from the pp-->pp\pi^0 reaction was carried out. An upper limit on the square of
the U-gamma mixing strength parameter epsilon^2 of 5e-6 at 90% CL was obtained
for the mass range 20 MeV <M_U< 100 MeV. This result together with other recent
experimental limits significantly reduces the M_U vs. \epsilon^2 parameter
space preferred by the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures; improved analysis extending the exclusion region

Exploring discordance between Health Literacy Questionnaire scores of people with RMDs and assessment by treating health professionals
OBJECTIVES: We studied discordance between health literacy of people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) and assessment of health literacy by their treating health professionals, and explored whether discordance is associated with the patients' socioeconomic background. METHODS: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), spondyloarthritis (SpA), or gout from three Dutch outpatient rheumatology clinics completed the nine-domain Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ). Treating health professionals assessed their patients on each HLQ domain. Discordance per domain was defined as a ≥ 2-point difference on a 0-10 scale (except if both scores were below three or above seven), leading to three categories: "negative discordance" (i.e. professional scored lower), "probably the same", or "positive discordance" (i.e. professional scored higher). We used multivariable multilevel multinomial regression models with patients clustered by health professionals to test associations with socioeconomic factors (age, gender, education level, migration background, employment, disability for work, living alone). RESULTS: We observed considerable discordance (21-40% of patients) across HLQ domains. Most discordance occurred for "Critically appraising information" (40.5%, domain 5). Comparatively, positive discordance occurred more frequently. Negative discordance was more frequently and strongly associated with socioeconomic factors, specifically lower education level and non-Western migration background (for five HLQ domains). Associations between socioeconomic factors and positive discordance were less consistent. CONCLUSION: Frequent discordance between patients' scores and professionals' estimations indicates there may be hidden challenges in communication and care, which differ between socioeconomic groups. Successfully addressing patients' health literacy needs cannot solely depend on health professionals' estimations but will require measurement and dialogue
Associations of oxygenated hemoglobin with disease burden and prognosis in stable COPD : Results from COSYCONET
We studied whether in patients with stable COPD blood gases (BG), especially oxygenated hemoglobin (OxyHem) as a novel biomarker confer information on disease burden and prognosis and how this adds to the information provided by the comorbidity pattern and systemic inflammation. Data from 2137 patients (GOLD grades 1–4) of the baseline dataset of the COSYCONET COPD cohort were used. The associations with dyspnea, exacerbation history, BODE-Index (cut-off ≤2) and all-cause mortality over 3 years of follow-up were determined by logistic and Cox regression analyses, with sex, age, BMI and pack years as covariates. Predictive values were evaluated by ROC curves. Capillary blood gases included SaO2, PaO2, PaCO2, pH, BE and the concentration of OxyHem [haemoglobin (Hb) x fractional SaO2, g/dL] as a simple-to-measure correlate of oxygen content. Inflammatory markers were WBC, CRP, IL-6 and -8, TNF-alpha and fibrinogen, and comorbidities comprised a broad panel including cardiac and metabolic disorders. Among BG, OxyHem was associated with dyspnoea, exacerbation history, BODE-Index and mortality. Among inflammatory markers and comorbidities, only WBC and heart failure were consistently related to all outcomes. ROC analyses indicated that OxyHem provided information of a magnitude comparable to that of WBC, with optimal cut-off values of 12.5 g/dL and 8000/µL, respectively. Regarding mortality, OxyHem also carried independent, additional information, showing a hazard ratio of 2.77 (95% CI: 1.85–4.15, p 8000/µL was 2.33 (95% CI: 1.60–3.39, p < 0.0001). In stable COPD, the concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin provided additional information on disease state, especially mortality risk. OxyHem can be calculated from hemoglobin concentration and oxygen saturation without the need for the measurement of PaO2. It thus appears well suited for clinical use with minimal equipment, especially for GPs
