Design and fabrication of a planar three-DOFs MEMS-based manipulator

This paper presents the design, modeling, and fabrication of a planar three-degrees-of-freedom parallel kinematic manipulator, fabricated with a simple two-mask process in conventional highly doped single-crystalline silicon (SCS) wafers (100). The manipulator’s purpose is to provide accurate and stable positioning of a small sample (10 × 20 × 0.2 μm3), e.g., within a transmission electron microscope. The manipulator design is based on the principles of exact constraint design, resulting in a high actuation-compliance combined with a relatively high suspension stiffness. A modal analysis shows that the fourth vibration mode frequency is at least a factor 11 higher than the first three actuation-related mode frequencies. The comb-drive actuators are modeled in combination with the shuttle suspensions gaining insight into the side and rotational pull-in stability conditions. The two-mask fabrication process enables high-aspect-ratio structures, combined with electrical trench insulation. Trench insulation allows structures in conventional wafers to be mechanically connected while being electrically insulated from each other. Device characterization shows high linearity of displacement wrt voltage squared over ±10 μm stroke in the x- and y-directions and ±2◦ rotation at a maximum of 50 V driving voltage. Out-of-plane displacement crosstalk due to in-plane actuation in resonance is measured to be less than 20 pm. The hysteresis in SCS, measured using white light interferometry, is shown to be extremely small

Coupling ANIMO and MT3DMS for 3D regional-scale modeling of nutrient transport in soil and groundwater

We developed an on-line coupling between the 1D/quasi-2D nutrient transport model ANIMO and the 3D groundwater transport model code MT3DMS. ANIMO is a detailed, process-oriented simulation model code for the simulation of nitrate leaching to groundwater, N- and P-loads on surface waters and emissions of greenhouse gasses. It is the leading nutrient fate and transport code in the Netherlands where it is used primarily for the evaluation of fertilization related legislation. In addition, the code is applied frequently in international research projects. MT3DMS is probably the most commonly used groundwater solute transport package worldwide. The on-line model coupling ANIMO-MT3DMS combines the state-of-the-art descriptions of the biogeochemical cycles in ANIMO with the advantages of using a 3D approach for the transport through the saturated domain. These advantages include accounting for regional lateral transport, considering groundwater-surface water interactions more explicitly, and the possibility of using MODFLOW to obtain the flow fields. An additional merit of the on-line coupling concept is that it preserves feedbacks between the saturated and unsaturated zone

Specific imaging of atherosclerotic plaque lipids with two-wavelength intravascular photoacoustics

The lipid content in plaques is an important marker for identifying atherosclerotic lesions and disease states. Intravascular photoacoustic (IVPA) imaging can be used to visualize lipids in the artery. In this study, we further investigated lipid detection in the 1.7-μm spectral range. By exploiting the relative difference between the IVPA signal strengths at 1718 and 1734 nm, we could successfully detect and differentiate between the plaque lipids and peri-adventitial fat in human coronary arteries ex vivo. Our study demonstrates that IVPA imaging can positively identify atherosclerotic plaques using only two wavelengths, which could enable rapid data acquisition in vivo
