Routine immunofluorescent and histochemical analysis of bone marrow involvement of lymphoma/leukaemia: the use of cryostat sections.

    Get PDF
Enzyme histochemical and immunohistological (immuno-fluorescence and -peroxidase) techniques have been routinely used for investigating over 70 normal and pathological bone marrow samples. This recently standardized diagnostic procedure is very quick and can be performed in a few hours. In 6 cases the clinical diagnosis of leukaemia/lymphoma has become apparent only after the immunohistological analysis of the bone marrow. In 6 other cases the information about the staging of B cell malignancies was superior in the frozen biopsies to the paraffin embedded preparations. Amongst many other features the monoclonality of B CLL/lymphomas, the special features of B CLL infiltrates (RFA-1+, Leu-1+, HLA-DR+, SmIg+), follicular lymphoma deposits (containing follicular dendritic cells) and non-T, non-B acute lymphoblastic leukaemic blasts (terminal transferase+, HLA-DR+) as well as the sometimes conspicuous presence of infiltrating normal T cells could be clearly and reproducibly demonstrated

Pattern forming instability induced by light in pure and dye-doped nematic liquid crystals

We study theoretically the instabilities induced by a linearly polarized ordinary light wave incident at a small oblique angle on a thin layer of homeotropically oriented nematic liquid crystal with special emphasis on the dye-doped case. The spatially periodic Hopf bifurcation that occurs as the secondary instability after the stationary Freedericksz transition is analyzed.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, LaTeX, accepted to Phys. Rev.

Influence of Nd on the magnetic properties of Nd1-xCaxMnO3

The role played by the Nd ions in the magnetic properties of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and Nd0.7Ca0.3MnO3 is studied using static magnetization, neutron diffraction and high frequency (9.4-475GHz) Electron Spin Resonance. We show that the Nd ions are weakly coupled to the Mn ions via ferromagnetic exchange and are responsible for the peculiar ferromagnetic resonance observed in the FM phase of both compounds (ground state below 120K for x=0.3, high field state for x=0.5). We then use ESR to look for magnetic phase separation in the low field, CO phase of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3. We show that there is no trace of the FM phase imbedded in the CO phase, contrary to what is observed in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 or Pr0.5Sr0.5MnO3.Comment: to be published in phys.Rev.B as a Rapid Com

Variable Corticosteroid Sensitivity of Thymic Cortex and Medullary Peripheral-type Lymphoid Tissue in Myasthenia Gravis Patients: Structural and Functional Effects

    Get PDF
The thymus has been studied in myasthenia gravis patients to assess the effects of previous immunosuppresslon on total yields of cell suspension, immunohistology and culture responses. The reduction in cell yields by pretreatment with corticosteroid was very variable. In 16 of 32 cases, cortical, medullary and total cell numbers were all greatly reduced (‘depleted cases'), whereas in the others, they were within or near the typical range for untreated myasthenics. Cortical thymocytes were even more depleted than precursor thymic blasts. Thus the interpatient differences in sensitivity to corticosteroid recently described for mature T cells also affected immature cortical thymocytes and their differentiating medullary progeny. In the medulla, mature (CD3+)T lymphocytes and germinal centres were enriched by the loss of cortex and appeared relatively healthy, but somewhat depopulated. Concomitantly, in-vitro T-cell responses to acetylcholine receptor (AChR) and production of anti-A ChR antibody and total IgG by thymic cells were usually well within the typical range (assessed per 106 cells). Moreover, the total productivity of the entire thymus was reduced almost entirely by the cellular depopulation rather than by decreased function per surviving cell. Thus the main actions of this alternate day therapy with corticosteroids were apparently on total peripheral cell numbers, and perhaps on activated cells and effector mechanisms too, and its thymic effects were inessentia

Electronic density of states derived from thermodynamic critical field curves for underdoped La-Sr-Cu-O

Thermodynamic critical field curves have been measured for La2xSrxCuO4+δLa_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4+\delta} over the full range of carrier concentrations where superconductivity occurs in order to determine changes in the normal state density of states with carrier concentration. There is a substantial window in the HTH-T plane where the measurements are possible because the samples are both thermodynamically reversible and the temperature is low enough that vortex fluctuations are not important. In this window, the data fit Hao-Clem rather well, so this model is used to determine HcH_c and κc\kappa_c for each temperature and carrier concentration. Using N(0) and the ratio of the energy gap to transition temperature, Δ(0)/kBTc\Delta (0)/k_BT_c, as fitting parameters, the HcvsTH_c vs T curves give Δ(0)/kBTc2.0\Delta (0)/k_BT_c \sim 2.0 over the whole range of xx. Values of N(0) remain rather constant in the optimum-doped and overdoped regime, but drops quickly toward zero in the underdoped regime.

The relationship between beta-2-microglobulin, CD4 lymphocyte count, AIDS and death in HIV-positive individuals

The relationship, in 539 individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), between two prognostic markers, the CD4 count and beta-2-microglobulin (B2M), and the development of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and death was investigated. Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine the risk of AIDS or death. In a multivariate model which adjusted for demographic factors and treatment, the most recent measurements of B2M (relative hazard (RH) 1.37 per g/l higher) and CD4 count (RH 2.17 per log-unit lower) were both significantly associated with the development of AIDS. Similarly, in a multivariate model which additionally adjusted for the development of AIDS as a time dependant covariate, there was a strong relationship with risk of death for the most recent measurements of B2M (RH 1.34 per g/l higher), and CD4 lymphocyte count (RH 1.91 per log-unit lower). A difference in the level of B2M could be used among patients with similar CD4 counts as an indicator of increased risk of progression to AIDS or death. Using the most recent values of these markers provides a better estimate of the risk of AIDS or death, compared to the more common method of analysis, where baseline values of the markers are used

Dynamics of the Local Moment Induced by Nonmagnetic Defects in Cuprates

We present a study of the spin dynamics of magnetic defects induced by Li substitution of the plane Cu in the normal state of YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+x_{6+x}. The fluctuations of the coupled Cu magnetic moments in the vicinity of Li are probed by near-neighbour 89^{89}Y {\it and} 7^7Li NMR spin lattice relaxation. The data indicates that the magnetic perturbation fluctuates as a single entity with a correlation time τ\tau which scales with the local static susceptibility. This behaviour is reminiscent of the low TT Kondo state of magnetic impurities in conventional metals. Surprisingly it extends well above the ``Kondo'' temperature for the underdoped pseudogapped case.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures (same), major modifications to text, accepted in PR

Anisotropy of superconducting MgB2 as seen in electron spin resonance and magnetization data

    Get PDF
We have observed the conduction electron spin resonance (CESR) in fine powders of MgB2 both in the superconducting and normal states. The Pauli susceptibility is chi_s=2.0*10^{-5} emu/mole in the temperature range of 450 to 600 K. The spin relaxation rate has an anomalous temperature dependence. The CESR measured below T_c at several frequencies suggests that MgB_2 is a strongly anisotropic superconductor with the upper critical field, H_c2, ranging between 2 and 16 T. The high-field reversible magnetization data of a randomly oriented powder sample are well described assuming that MgB_2 is an anisotropic superconductor with H_c2^{ab} / H_{c2}^{c} \approx 6--9.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figure
