    Credit-constrained in risky activities? The determinants of the capital stocks of micro and small firms in Western Africa

    Micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in developing countries are typically considered to be severely credit constrained. Additionally, high business risks may partly explain why the capital stocks of MSEs remain low. This article analyzes the determinants of the capital stocks of MSEs in poor economies focusing on credit constraints and risk. The analysis is based on a unique, albeit cross‐sectional but backward‐looking, micro data set on MSEs covering the economic capitals of seven West‐African countries. The main result is that capital market imperfections indeed seem to explain an important part of the variation in capital stocks in the early lifetime of MSEs. Furthermore, the analyses show that risk plays a key role in capital accumulation. Risk‐averse individuals seem to adjust their initially low capital stocks upwards when enterprises grow older. MSEs in risky activities owned by wealthy individuals even seem to over‐invest when they start their business and subsequently adjust capital stocks downwards. As other firms simultaneously suffer from capital shortages, such behaviour may imply large inefficiencies

    l-Acetyl-carnitine in Patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Effects on Nerve Protection, Hand Function and Pain

    Background and Aim: l-Acetyl-carnitine (LAC) exerts an energetic effect on nerves and muscles. Recently, preclinical experiments have demonstrated a central anti-nociceptive action. Objective: Our objective was to assess the effects of LAC on neuroprotection, pain, and function in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a very frequent chronic compressive neuropathy. Methods: In a multicentre, examiner-blinded, clinical and neurophysiological 4-month study, we enrolled 82 patients and examined 120 hands with CTS of mild to moderate severity. Patients were assessed at baseline and 10, 60 and 120\uc2 days after treatment with LAC 500\uc2 mg twice daily (BID). All patients underwent a conduction study of the median nerve, the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ) and the Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory (NPSI).     Molecular evolution of bovine Toll-like receptor 2 suggests substitutions of functional relevance

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>There is accumulating evidence that polymorphism in Toll-like receptor (<it>TLR) </it>genes might be associated with disease resistance or susceptibility traits in livestock. Polymorphic sites affecting TLR function should exhibit signatures of positive selection, identified as a high ratio of non-synonymous to synonymous nucleotide substitutions (ω). Phylogeny based models of codon substitution based on estimates of ω for each amino acid position can therefore offer a valuable tool to predict sites of functional relevance. We have used this approach to identify such polymorphic sites within the bovine <it>TLR2 </it>genes from ten <it>Bos indicus </it>and <it>Bos taurus </it>cattle breeds. By analysing <it>TLR2 </it>gene phylogeny in a set of mammalian species and a subset of ruminant species we have estimated the selective pressure on individual sites and domains and identified polymorphisms at sites of putative functional importance.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The ω were highest in the mammalian TLR2 domains thought to be responsible for ligand binding and lowest in regions responsible for heterodimerisation with other TLR-related molecules. Several positively-selected sites were detected in or around ligand-binding domains. However a comparison of the ruminant subset of <it>TLR2 </it>sequences with the whole mammalian set of sequences revealed that there has been less selective pressure among ruminants than in mammals as a whole. This suggests that there have been functional changes during ruminant evolution. Twenty newly-discovered non-synonymous polymorphic sites were identified in cattle. Three of them were localised at positions shaped by positive selection in the ruminant dataset (Leu227Phe, His305Pro, His326Gln) and in domains involved in the recognition of ligands. His326Gln is of particular interest as it consists of an exchange of differentially-charged amino acids at a position which has previously been shown to be crucial for ligand binding in human TLR2.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Within bovine TLR2, polymorphisms at amino acid positions 227, 305 and 326 map to functionally important sites of TLR2 and should be considered as candidate SNPs for immune related traits in cattle. A final proof of their functional relevance requires further studies to determine their functional effect on the immune response after stimulation with relevant ligands and/or their association with immune related traits in animals.</p

    A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON THE EXPERIENCES OF TEACHER’S KIDS

    This research study aims to understand the experiences, issues, and self-perception of Filipino Teachers’ Kids (TKs).&nbsp; A qualitative approach was utilized in the study. There were 14 TKs who participated in the study from selected cities in Luzon and Visayas whose mother, father or both parents are teachers.&nbsp; The interviews were audio recorded and were transcribed for analysis. The result shows that TKs experienced pressures not to shame their teacher’s parents; they received high expectations to perform well in academics and to participate actively in church activities. &nbsp; The issues of TKs are being in need of bonding time with their parents and being unattended by their parents due to work. The TKs perceived their life as difficult, challenging and yet, fulfilling. They were thankful because they received educational aids and were monitored&nbsp; by their parents in their studies. The study concluded that TKs experiences helped them to strive more and become better person

    Effects of Transdermal Fentanyl Treatment on Acute Pain and Inflammation in Rats with Adjuvant-induced Monoarthritis

    Eliminating unnecessary pain is an important requirement of performing animal experimentation, including reducing and controlling pain of animals used in pain research. The goal of this study was to refine an adjuvant-induced monoarthritis model in rats by providing analgesia with a transdermal fentanyl solution (TFS). Male and female Sprague-Dawley rats, single- or pair-housed, were injected with 20 ÎŒL of complete Freund adjuvant (CFA) into the left ankle joint. CFA-injected rats treated with a single dose of transdermal fentanyl solution (0.33 or 1 mg/kg) were compared with an untreated CFA-injected group and sham groups that received either no treatment or TFS treatment (1 mg/kg) during 72 h. At the tested doses, TFS reduced mechanical hyperalgesia and improved the mobility, stance, rearing, and lameness scores at 6 h after CFA injection. Joint circumferences were not reduced by TFS treatment, and no significant differences were detected between the 2 doses of TFS, or between single- and pair-housed rats. Treatment with TFS did not appear to interfere with model development and characteristics. However, overall, the analgesic effect was transient, and several opioid-related side effects were observed

    In March 2011, a week-long workshop that invited participation from all architecture and architectural technology students at Sheffield Hallam University, UK was organised with the objective of enhancing students’ thinking and experience by construction thinking. It was aimed at creating a sense of realness to realise a design project collectively. Timber was set as the material of exploration. The students had to make use of bending to design and create a timber gridshell structure. This made use of a quality traditionally felt to be a structural weakness of the material. To do this, students form-found non-mathematically and non-digitally using paper gridmats. This paper describes the aims, activity and outcome of the timber gridshell workshop as a way of preparing architects and technologists of the future and introducing the challenges of architectural design in terms of economics and construction process, aesthetics, effective communication and structural intuition by working with a given material – all important aspects in achieving effective architecture

    FMRI resting slow fluctuations correlate with the activity of fast cortico-cortical physiological connections

    Recording of slow spontaneous fluctuations at rest using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) allows distinct long-range cortical networks to be identified. The neuronal basis of connectivity as assessed by resting-state fMRI still needs to be fully clarified, considering that these signals are an indirect measure of neuronal activity, reflecting slow local variations in de-oxyhaemoglobin concentration. Here, we combined fMRI with multifocal transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a technique that allows the investigation of the causal neurophysiological interactions occurring in specific cortico-cortical connections. We investigated whether the physiological properties of parieto-frontal circuits mapped with short-latency multifocal TMS at rest may have some relationship with the resting-state fMRI measures of specific resting-state functional networks (RSNs). Results showed that the activity of fast cortico-cortical physiological interactions occurring in the millisecond range correlated selectively with the coupling of fMRI slow oscillations within the same cortical areas that form part of the dorsal attention network, i.e., the attention system believed to be involved in reorientation of attention. We conclude that resting-state fMRI ongoing slow fluctuations likely reflect the interaction of underlying physiological cortico-cortical connections
