    Asymptotically hyperbolic black holes in Horava gravity

    Solutions of Horava gravity that are asymptotically Lifshitz are explored. General near boundary expansions allow the calculation of the mass of these spacetimes via a Hamiltonian method. Both analytic and numeric solutions are studied which exhibit a causal boundary called the universal horizon, and are therefore black holes of the theory.     The influence of classical-conditioning procedures on subsequent attention to the conditioned brand.

    Three experiments are used to investigate the influence of conditioning procedures on attention to a conditioned stimulus. In experiment 1, scenes presented in a sequence that is consistent with prescribed conditioning procedures are shown to encourage attention to the advertised brands in subsequent product displays. Experiment 2 suggests that differential attention to conditioned brands can be attributed to the signaling properties the brand acquires as a consequence of conditioning. Evidence from a third experiment raises the possibility that semantic conditioning may be responsible for the effects observed in experiments 1 and 2.     30-Year-Long Changes in Terrestrial Vertebrate Fauna of Niebieskie ŹródłA (Blue Springs) Nature Reserve in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Central Poland

    The article focuses on changes in terrestrial vertebrate fauna of Niebieskie Źródła (Blue Springs) Nature Reserve that occurred between two censuses carried out in the area. The first census was carried out in the period of 1968-1970, and the second census in the period of 1998-1999. In 1998-1999 the occurrence of four species of amphibians, 41 of birds and 15 of mammals was recorded. In comparison with investigations from 1968-1970 two species of amphibians, two species of mammals, and nine species of birds were found to have disappeared from the reserve. In the census carried out in 1998 and 1999 we recorded 22 new species of vertebrates: one new species of amphibian, five species of mammals, and 16 species of birds. The recent observations showed a decline in the abundance of amphibian species in the reserve, especially in the closest vicinity to the urban development around the city of Tomaszów Mazowiecki. The quantitative data on birds showed an increase in the numbers and abundance, which was mainly pronounced in the group of forest species, especially cavity and shrub nesters. We suggest that these changes are directly related to the succession of forest vegetation and its developing vertical structure, as well as to an increase in the forestation of the reserve area

    Pattern of Post-Juvenile Moult in Common Snipe (Gallinago Gallinago) and Its Implications for Ageing of the Species

    External ageing of Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) still engenders considerable problems. To improve precision of age determination on the basis of plumage characteristics a scheme of post-juvenile moult was investigated in approximately 1200 first-year Common Snipes caught during autumn migration in central Poland. Post-juvenile moult was commenced from body feathers followed by moult of rectrices, lesser/median wing coverts and tertials. Moult sequence showed high inter-individual variability and was started in rectrices (36.9%), wing coverts (25.3%), tertials (8.4%) or simultaneously in several of these tracts of feathers (29.4%). Moult of rectrices was finished before completion of moult of wing coverts and tertials. Moult of tertials finished as the last from all age-indicative tracts of feathers. Consequently, tertials were suggested as the most useful for ageing of first-year Common Snipes in an advanced stage of moult. There was no case of moult of the outermost tertial in first-year birds. The second tertial from distal side of wing was moulted as the last one within this tract of feathers and thereby should be of special interest during plumage examination

    The influence of ferrous scrap’s grade on the yield of steel smelted in an electric-arc furnace (EAF)

    In the paper there is presented a statistical analysis of the influence of various quality classes and the amount of scrap in steel charges on the rate of liquid steel yield from the electric arc furnace (EAF). The research methodology involved the analytical simulation of changes in the liquid mass of steel acquired from melts with different scrap content and statistical analysis of data obtained from the correlating process documentation (so-called melting sheets) under industrial conditions. The attained results may be employed in any steel mill that uses electrical steelmaking processes, to design the composition of a metal charge while bearing in mind the qualitative and economic aspects

    Seismic Reflection and Gravity Constraints on the Bedrock Configuration in the Greater East Missoula Area

    The greater East Missoula, MT area is the site of numerous studies to track possible groundwater contamination from the EPA Superfund Site at the Milltown Dam. The accuracy of these groundwater models depends on many factors, one of which is the accuracy to which the bedrock topography is mapped. Currently, a map based heavily on a gravity survey provides the most detailed map of the bedrock. The accuracy of this map may be improved through the use of seismic reflection techniques, better estimates of the density contrast used in the gravity modeling, and by extending the gravity survey to include more data and a broader area. The seismic reflection technique used to supplement the gravity data is the optimum offset technique. This method simplifies field collection of the data and processing of the data. The final result of this method is a seismic section showing the depth to different reflectors in the subsurface, one of which is the bedrock. In order to improve the estimate of the density contrast used in the gravity modeling, the homogeneity of the valley fill was tested. This was done by comparing the results from two different modeling programs, one of which let the density contrast vary, to see if there was an improvement in the final result. The gravity survey was also extended to incorporate a larger area and more data. The results show that seismic reflection can be used to improve the depth estimate in the valley where the depth is shallow and that the density contrast is most likely homogeneous. The extended gravity survey provided more data to work with and the final result is a map of the bedrock topography for the greater East Missoula Area that incorporates all currently known data and provides a sufficiently accurate estimate of the depth to be used in groundwater models
