    Corrosion Investigation of Reinforcing Bars in Pavements and Bridge Decks Part II: Chloride Penetration/Rebar Corrosion Mechanisms

    This final report was made to the Center for Transportation Studies.The main factors that influence the initiation and propagation of rebar corrosion in concrete are concrete properties, aggressive corrosive elements from the environment and concrete, and defects of the reinforcing material. The presence of chloride ion appears to be the dominant cause for rebar corrosion in concrete. Rebar corrosion is complex and the basic mechanisms of individual factors are not well understood because of the complex nature of physical and electrochemical factors and because of their interdependence. A visualization technique was developed for use in our laboratory for the determination of chloride ion distribution and concentration near the reinforcements in concrete. A galvanic current measurement technique was developed for estimating the corrosion rates of rebars in simulated concrete solutions and for investigating the effects of relevant parameters that may be responsible for macro-cell corrosion on rebars as a function of chloride ion concentration. The corrosion mechanism of rebars was explored by using the galvanic current measurement method as well as by using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The compounds that combine the properties of a corrosion inhibitor and a surfactant were explored for retardation of rebar corrosion. Organic compounds slowed the corrosion of rebars acting as an adsorption-type inhibitor. Organic compounds developed hydrophobic surfaces on concrete. Such an observation implies that salt solution may be prevented from penetrating the microcracks in concrete.     Constitutive modeling of deformation behavior of high-entropy alloys with face-centered cubic crystal structure

    A constitutive model based on the dislocation glide and deformation twinning is adapted to face-centered cubic high-entropy alloys (HEAs) as exemplified by the CrMnFeCoNi system. In this model, the total dislocation density is considered as the only internal variable, while the evolution equation describing its variation during plastic deformation is governed by the volume fraction of twinned material. The suitability of the model for describing the strain hardening behavior of HEAs was verified experimentally through compression tests on alloy CrMnFeCoNi and its microstructure characterization by electron backscatter diffraction and X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation. ? 2017 The Author(s).     Competition between parallel sensorimotor learning systems

    Sensorimotor learning is supported by at least two parallel systems: A strategic process that benefits from explicit knowledge, and an implicit process that adapts subconsciously. How do these systems interact? Does one system's contributions suppress the other, or do they operate independently? Here we illustrate that during reaching, implicit and explicit systems both learn from visual target errors. This shared error leads to competition such that an increase in the explicit system's response siphons away resources that are needed for implicit adaptation, thus reducing its learning. As a result, steady-state implicit learning can vary across experimental conditions, due to changes in strategy. Furthermore, strategies can mask changes in implicit learning properties, such as its error sensitivity. These ideas, however, become more complex in conditions where subjects adapt using multiple visual landmarks, a situation which introduces learning from sensory prediction errors in addition to target errors. These two types of implicit errors can oppose each other, leading to another type of competition.     Against all odds? Forming the planet of the HD196885 binary

    HD196885Ab is the most "extreme" planet-in-a-binary discovered to date, whose orbit places it at the limit for orbital stability. The presence of a planet in such a highly perturbed region poses a clear challenge to planet-formation scenarios. We investigate this issue by focusing on the planet-formation stage that is arguably the most sensitive to binary perturbations: the mutual accretion of kilometre-sized planetesimals. To this effect we numerically estimate the impact velocities dvdv amongst a population of circumprimary planetesimals. We find that most of the circumprimary disc is strongly hostile to planetesimal accretion, especially the region around 2.6AU (the planet's location) where binary perturbations induce planetesimal-shattering dvdv of more than 1km/s. Possible solutions to the paradox of having a planet in such accretion-hostile regions are 1) that initial planetesimals were very big, at least 250km, 2) that the binary had an initial orbit at least twice the present one, and was later compacted due to early stellar encounters, 3) that planetesimals did not grow by mutual impacts but by sweeping of dust (the "snowball" growth mode identified by Xie et al., 2010b), or 4) that HD196885Ab was formed not by core-accretion but by the concurent disc instability mechanism.     Search for sterile neutrino oscillation using RENO and NEOS data

    We present a reactor model independent search for sterile neutrino oscillation using 2\,509\,days of RENO near detector data and 180 days of NEOS data. The reactor related systematic uncertainties are significantly suppressed as both detectors are located at the same reactor complex of Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant. The search is performed by electron antineutrino\,(νe\overline{\nu}_e) disappearance between six reactors and two detectors with baselines of 294\,m\,(RENO) and 24\,m\,(NEOS). A spectral comparison of the NEOS prompt-energy spectrum with a no-oscillation prediction from the RENO measurement can explore reactor νe\overline{\nu}_e oscillations to sterile neutrino. Based on the comparison, we obtain a 95\% C.L. excluded region of 0.1<Δm412<70.1<|\Delta m_{41}^2|<7\,eV2^2. We also obtain a 68\% C.L. allowed region with the best fit of Δm412=2.41±0.03|\Delta m_{41}^2|=2.41\,\pm\,0.03\,\,eV2^2 and sin22θ14\sin^2 2\theta_{14}=0.08±\,\pm\,0.03 with a p-value of 8.2\%. Comparisons of obtained reactor antineutrino spectra at reactor sources are made among RENO, NEOS, and Daya Bay to find a possible spectral variation.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures: This manuscript has been significantly revised by the joint reanalysis by RENO and NEOS Collaborations.     Search for the Electric Dipole Moment of the tau Lepton

    We have searched for a CP violation signature arising from an electric dipole moment (d_tau) of the tau lepton in the e+e- -> tau+tau- reaction. Using an optimal observable method and 29.5 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider at sqrt{s} = 10.58 GeV, we find Re(d_tau) = (1.15 +- 1.70) x 10^{-17} ecm and Im(d_tau) = (-0.83 +- 0.86) x 10^{-17} ecm and set the 95% confidence level limits -2.2 < Re(d_tau) < 4.5 (10^{-17}ecm) and -2.5 < Im(d_tau) < 0.8 (10^{-17}ecm).Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX, 21 figures, submitted to Phys.     Measurement of the Branching Fraction for B->eta' K and Search for B->eta'pi+

    We report measurements for two-body charmless B decays with an eta' meson in the final state. Using 11.1X10^6 BBbar pairs collected with the Belle detector, we find BF(B^+ ->eta'K^+)=(79^+12_-11 +-9)x10^-6 and BF(B^0 -> eta'K^0)=(55^+19_-16 +-8)x10^-6, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. No signal is observed in the mode B^+ -> eta' pi^+, and we set a 90% confidence level upper limit of BF(B^+-> eta'pi^+) eta'K^+- decays is investigated and a limit at 90% confidence level of -0.20<Acp<0.32 is obtained.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters

    Study of B0ˉD()0π+π\bar{B^{0}} \to D^{(*)0} \pi^+ \pi^- Decays

    We report on a study of B0ˉD()0π+π\bar{B^{0}} \to D^{(*) 0} \pi^+ \pi^- decays using 29.1 fb1^{-1} of e+ee^{+}e^{-} annihilation data recorded at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB storage ring. Making no assumptions about the intermediate mechanism, the branching fractions for Bˉ0D0π+π\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \pi^+ \pi^- and Bˉ0D0π+π\bar{B}^0 \to D^{* 0} \pi^+ \pi^- are determined to be (8.0±0.6±1.5)×104(8.0 \pm 0.6 \pm 1.5) \times 10^{-4} and (6.2±1.2±1.8)×104 (6.2 \pm 1.2 \pm 1.8) \times 10^{-4} respectively. An analysis of B0ˉD0π+π\bar{B^{0}} \to D^{0} \pi^+ \pi^- candidates yields to the first observation of the color-suppressed hadronic decay Bˉ0D0ρ0\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \rho^0 with the branching fraction (2.9±1.0±0.4)×104(2.9 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-4}. We measure the ratio of branching fractions B(B0ˉD0ρ0)/B(B0ˉD0ω){\mathcal B}(\bar{B^0} \to D^0 \rho^0) / {\mathcal B}(\bar{B^0} \to D^0 \omega) = 1.6 ±\pm 0.8.Comment: 13 pages, LaTex, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.
