The meaning of communication in cultural group activity

Japan had 17,819 Kouminkan in 1996. The Kouminkan had been the education center to solve the real life problems of people in the community. However, the Kouminkan has been changing it\u27s character as an institute where people can gather and participate in various activities and interact with others. This is due to the improvement of other educational media such as computers, televisions and specialty books and the affluence of living conditions since the growth of the Japanese economy. We can say that this phenomenon reflects the demand that people desire communication with others during leisure time. On the basis of this recognition, this article suggests the style and character of communication in cultural group activities during leisure time. For the proposition, this article investigates the theories of communication that are based on the hermeneutic and social approach, like those of Stella. Thing-Toomey, Edward T. Hall, and George H. Mead. In addition, this article investigates the meaning of activities in the same way that Hannah Arendt discussed from the view point of communication

The Diffusion and Utilization of a Film in Social Education : Limited to the Activities of a Local Film Centre after the 1970s

This essay is to study the establishment of a local film centre, which has been supporting independent film showings for locals since its development in the 1970s. The examination particularly focuses on the significance of film showing and viewing for educational purposes, and the characteristics of a supporting body to provide a base for such activities. As a result, it will reveal that the influence that the local film centre brings to regional society by film screening depends on its nature as an agent succeeding an ideal of the independent film screening campaign of the 1950s, at the same time, as an entrepreneur whose seeks to promote its activities securing the steady number of the audience to each show. In the examination of such a film centre, the paper also will illustrate the features and contradictions that a local community centre bears in serving for social education

This essay is a study in the promotion and utilisation of films for social education. It focuses on an audio-visual library among various facilities in local communities connected with film promotion, and examines its functions and features. It gives a special attention to distinctive features of libraries, which derives from a course of campaign to publicise an audio-visual library. The essay also illustrates characteristics of a supporting function that aims to fulfil both the interests of other commercial parties taking part in promoting library activities to pursue benefit than ideal, as well as the demands for films in a local community

The purpose of this study is to address the trends of the research on brain-based learning and to present an integrative theoretical framework to provide new insights and future directions in adult education and HRD fields. Based on the neuroscientific perspective, the implications of which the ways to conceptually broaden educational research and practice were discussed

Serum zinc deficiency could be associated with dementia conversion in Parkinson’s disease

BackgroundAssociation between heavy metals and Parkinson’s disease (PD) is well noted, but studies regarding heavy metal levels and non-motor symptoms of PD, such as PD’s dementia (PD-D), are lacking.MethodsIn this retrospective cohort study, we compared five serum heavy metal levels (Zn, Cu, Pb, Hg, and Mn) of newly diagnosed PD patients (n = 124). Among 124 patients, 40 patients were later converted to Parkinson’s disease dementia (PD-D), and 84 patients remained without dementia during the follow-up time. We collected clinical parameters of PD and conducted correlation analysis with heavy metal levels. PD-D conversion time was defined as the initiation time of cholinesterase inhibitors. Cox proportional hazard models were used to identify factors associated with dementia conversion in PD subjects.ResultsZn deficiency was significant in the PD-D group than in the PD without dementia group (87.53 ± 13.20 vs. 74.91 ± 14.43, p < 0.01). Lower serum Zn level was significantly correlated with K-MMSE and LEDD at 3 months (r = −0.28, p < 0.01; r = 0.38, p < 0.01). Zn deficiency also contributed to a shorter time to dementia conversion (HR 0.953, 95% CI 0.919 to 0.988, p < 0.01).ConclusionThis clinical study suggests that a low serum Zn level can be a risk factor for developing PD-D and could be used as a biological marker for PD-D conversion

Association between thyroid hormones and the components of metabolic syndrome

BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormones are known to have direct and indirect effects on metabolism. Individuals with metabolic syndrome, a disease that is growing in incidence at a rapid rate, are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. The aim of this study was to identify whether significant correlations exist between thyroid hormone levels and components of the metabolic syndrome in the general population of Korea. METHODS: The data were collected from the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 2013 to 2015. A total of 1423 participants were tested for thyroid function. The analysis of variance and multiple linear regression were performed to analyze the relationship between thyroid hormone level and components of the metabolic syndrome. RESULTS: A positive association between free thyroxine and fasting glucose level was observed in patients with high free thyroxine levels (≥1.70 ng/dL, β = 15.992, p = < 0.0001), when compared with patients with normal-middle free thyroxine levels. Moreover, a negative association was observed between free thyroxine and triglyceride levels in patients with normal-high free thyroxine levels (β = - 21.145, p = 0.0054) and those with high free thyroxine levels (β = - 49.713, p = 0.0404). CONCLUSION: Free thyroxine shows a partially positive association with fasting glucose and a partially negative association with triglycerides in the Korean population. In patients with abnormal thyroid function, follow up tests for glucose levels and lipid profiling during treatment for thyroid dysfunction would be beneficial in terms of overlooking metabolic syndrome and to prevent related diseases
