    This study examined the effects of a mother\u27s incarceration on her children. Benefits, as well as problems, associated with facilitating a mother-child visitation program were discussed. Guidelines were presented for parents, caregivers, children, and prison staff on a successful mother-child visitation program. Conclusions were drawn from the literature and recommendations were made for the future facilitation of a mother-child visitation program

Department of Biological Sciences, August 1993.Two cDNA libraries were constructed from desiccating pea cotyledons. Differential screening of the libraries with cDNA from an earlier developmental stage (physiological maturity) demonstrated that the abundant message population during dehydration shows some noticeable differences to the message populations present before desiccation. Clones hybridising to a polyubiquitin probe were isolated from a cDNA library. These clones were identified as messages for the two types of ubiquitin extension proteins (with 52 and 79 residue tails), already characterised in other species as being involved in ribosome biogenesis. The pea ubiquitin extension tail amino acid sequences showed considerable homology to tails from other plants, animals, yeast and protozoa, including a nuclear localisation site and a putative zinc-binding nucleic acid binding domain, the positions of which are conserved within the tail sequences. Sequencing of a second polyubiquitin cDNA from pea leaf demonstrated that pea contains a ubiquitin multigene family of at least four members. The expression of several genes associated with plant response to stress and two abundant seed messages (Leg A and J) was examined in developing and dehydrating cotyledons and axes. This confirmed conspicuous variations in the message levels of the genes examined as the cotyledons aged, with different members of the ubiquitin and legumin multigene families showing differential expression with age. It was also demonstrated that the expression pattern of certain messages in the cotyledons was different to that in the axes and other seed tissues. This was confirmed by an analysis of total and albumin protein fractions in cotyledons and axes. The effect on specific message and protein levels of premature desiccation treatments indicated that the temporal expression of several seed genes is related to the state of hydration of the seed, artificial desiccation leading to premature maturation. Seed storage protein message and protein levels were especially increased by premature desiccation. Legumin seed storage protein messages were also shown to be responsive to exogenous ABA applied to immature cotyledons during the seed filling stage. However, the other stress-related messages examined in pea (ubiquitin and a pea putative metallothionein) were not responsive to exogenous ABA at this developmental stage

    Professional standards for physical education teachers\u27 professional development : technology for performance?

    Background: The widespread and diverse models of professional standards for teaching raise questions with respect to the need to provide teachers with a pathway for continuing professional development balanced with the public nature of surveillance and accountability that may accompany standards. Ways of understanding technologies of power in relation to standards forteaching gives us a new language and, in turn, new questions about the standards agenda in the physical education profession.Purpose: To analyse how one health and physical education (HPE) teacher worked with Education Queensland’s (EQ) professional standards for teaching within the broader context of teacher professional development and renewal.Participants and setting: An experienced HPE teacher working in an urban secondary school was the ‘case’ for this article. Tim was the only experienced HPE teacher within the larger pilot study of 220 selected teachers from the volunteer pool across the state.Data collection: The case-study data comprised two in-depth interviews conducted by the first author, field notes from workshops (first author), teacher diaries and work samples, notes from focus groups of which Tim was a member, and electronic communications with peers by Timduring the course of the evaluation.Findings: Tim was supportive of the teaching standards while they did not have a strong evaluative dimension associated with technologies of power. He found the self-regulation associated with his reflective practices professionally rewarding rather than being formalised within a prescribedprofessional development framework.Conclusion: Tim’s positive response to the professional standards for teaching was typical of the broader pilot cohort. The concept of governmentality provided a useful framework to help map how the standards for teaching were received, regardless of teacher specialisation or experience.We suggest that it is not until the standards regimes are talked about within the discourses ofpower (e.g. codification for career progression, certification for professional development imperatives) that we can understand patterns of acceptance and resistance by teachers to policiesthat seek to shape their performance

    Comparative Trap Catches of Male Bactrocera, Dacus, and Zeugodacus Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) With Four Floral Phenylbutanoid Lures (Anisyl Acetone, Cue-Lure, Raspberry Ketone, and Zingerone) in Queensland, Australia

    The male fruit fly attractants, cue-lure (CL) and raspberry ketone (RK), are important in pest management. These volatile phenylbutanoids occur in daciniphilous Bulbophyllum Thouar (Orchidaceae: Asparagales) orchids, along with zingerone (ZN) and anisyl acetone (AA). While these four compounds attract a similar range of species, their relative attractiveness to multiple species is unknown. We field tested these compounds in two fruit fly speciose locations in north Queensland, Australia (Lockhart and Cairns) for 8 wk. Of 16 species trapped in significant numbers, 14 were trapped with CL and RK, all in significantly greater numbers with CL traps than RK traps (at least in higher population locations). This included the pest species Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) (Diptera: Tephritidae) (CL catches ca. 5× > RK), Bactrocera neohumeralis (Hardy) (Diptera: Tephritidae) and Bactrocera bryoniae (Tryon) (Diptera: Tephritidae) (CL catches ca. 3× > RK), and Bactrocera frauenfeldi (Schiner) (Diptera: Tephritidae) (in Cairns—CL catches ca. 1.6× > RK). Seven species were trapped with AA, and all were also caught in CL and RK traps in significantly greater numbers, with the exception of B. frauenfeldi. For this species, catches were not statistically different with CL, RK, and AA in Lockhart, and RK and AA in Cairns. Seven species were trapped with ZN, two at this lure only, and the remainder also with CL or RK but in significantly greater numbers. This is the first quantitative comparison of the relative attractiveness of CL, RK, AA, and ZN against multiple species, and supports the long-held but untested assumption that CL is broadly more attractive lure than RK

    Broadening conceptions of curriculum for young people : reports from three student - teachers on exchange

    Research reports prepared by three Australian preservice teachers Paula Shaw, Chris Sharp and Scott McDonald undertaking their teacher education practicum in Canada, form the basis of this paper. The reports provide critical insights into three aspects of education for young people in both Canada and Australia. They also provide critical insight into the ways in which a practicum research project, along with the opportunities afforded through an international experience, enabled the preservice teachers to broaden their understanding of the curriculum for young people, of issues relevant to the diverse needs of young people, and of themselves and their priorities as teachers. The preservice teachers investigated three topics: attempts to reduce homophobia in schools; the presence or absence of Aboriginal content in the school curricula in British Columbia and Queensland; and “schools-within-schools” as a means to meet the needs of diverse student populations.     Reflections on deploying distributed consultation technologies with community organisations

    In recent years there has been an increased focus upon developing platforms for community decision-making, and an awareness of the importance of handing over civic platforms to community organisations to oversee the process of decision-making at a local level. In this paper, we detail fieldwork from working with two community organisations who used our distributed situated devices as part of consultation processes. We focus on some of the mundane and often-untold aspects of this type of work: how questions for consultations were formed, how locations for devices were determined, and the ways in which the data collected fed into decision-making processes. We highlight a number of challenges for HCI and civic technology research going forward, related to the role of the researcher, the messiness of decision making in communities, and the ability of community organisations to influence how citizens participate in democratic processes
