[Review of] Eileen Tway, ed., Reading Ladders for Human Relations

    Get PDF
Reading Ladders for Human Relations is essentially an annotated bibliographical listing of books appropriate for young people. The books bave been grouped under five headings: (1) Growing into Self, (2) Relating to Wide Individual Differences, (3) Interacting with Groups, (4) Appreciating Different Cultures, and (5) Coping in a Changing World. The publication data of the majority of the works listed fall within the decade of the seventies. An alphabetical listing of publishers and authors and titles completes the book

Intrinsically knotted graphs with 21 edges

We show that the 14 graphs obtained by āˆ‡Y\nabla\mathrm{Y} moves on K_7 constitute a complete list of the minor minimal intrinsically knotted graphs on 21 edges. We also present evidence in support of a conjecture that the 20 graph Heawood family, obtained by a combination of āˆ‡Y\nabla\mathrm{Y} and Yāˆ‡\mathrm{Y}\nabla moves on K_7, is the list of graphs of size 21 that are minor minimal with respect to the property not 2--apex.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figure

Revealing Carrier-Envelope Phase through Frequency Mixing and Interference in Frequency Resolved Optical Gating

We demonstrate that full temporal characterisation of few-cycle electromagnetic pulses, including retrieval of the carrier envelope phase (CEP), can be directly obtained from Frequency Resolved Optical Gating (FROG) techniques in which the interference between non-linear frequency mixing processes is resolved. We derive a framework for this scheme, defined Real Domain-FROG (ReD-FROG), as applied to the cases of interference between sum and difference frequency components and between fundamental and sum/difference frequency components. A successful numerical demonstration of ReD-FROG as applied to the case of a self-referenced measurement is provided. A proof-of-principle experiment is performed in which the CEP of a single-cycle THz pulse is accurately obtained and demonstrates the possibility for THz detection beyond the bandwidth limitations of electro-optic sampling.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Establishing the Human Firewall: Reducing an Individual\u27s Vulnerability to Social Engineering Attacks

    Get PDF
Hackers frequently use social engineering attacks to gain a foothold into a target network. This type of attack is a tremendous challenge to defend against, as the weakness lies in the human users, not in the technology. Thus far, methods for dealing with this threat have included establishing better security policies and educating users on the threat that exists. Existing techniques arenā€™t working as evidenced by the fact that auditing agencies consider it a given that will be able to gain access via social engineering. The purpose of this research is to propose a better method of reducing an individualā€™s vulnerability to social engineering attacks. The first part of the research formally establishes the connection between social engineering attacks and what social psychologists call, ā€œillegitimate persuasionā€ using content analysis to show that both target the same common psychological triggers. This comparison is done by comparing specific examples in different mediums. Once this connection is established, this research also proposes how to apply specific techniques that have been shown to be effective in increasing an individualā€™s resistance to persuasion. Specifically, it uses techniques that have been shown to be effective in bolstering an individualā€™s resistance illegitimate persuasion. The research culminates in the proposal of a template for a training program using these new techniques that can be incorporated into existing training classes that should significantly reduce an individualā€™s vulnerability to social engineering attacks

Critique [of THE IMAGE OF GAYS IN CHICANO PROSE FICTION]

    Get PDF
The findings of Professor Reinhardt as they relate to his survey of the image of homosexuals in Chicano prose fiction are interesting and informative, but not surprising given the macho mental set often associated with this culture. His first two points, which seem to hold about the homosexual in contemporary society, also seem to be the viewpoint held by most Americans. In other words, a lack of tolerance towards the homosexual is not unique to Chicanos. As for the fact that Chicanos are ignored in writings which have homosexuality as a theme, this probably stems from the tendency for writers in many fields to ignore the role that minorities play in all facets of American life and culture. Just the same, the conclusions arrived at through this survey of Chicano literature provide further insight into a controversial aspect of human sexuality as viewed from one cultural setting and expressed through literature. The research also suggests some other avenues of inquiry into the image of homosexuals as portrayed in other cultures\u27 literatures

The time resolved measurement of ultrashort THz-band electric fields without an ultrashort probe

    Get PDF
The time-resolved detection of ultrashort pulsed THz-band electric field temporal profiles without an ultrashort laser probe is demonstrated. A non-linear interaction between a narrow-bandwidth optical probe and the THz pulse transposes the THz spectral intensity and phase information to the optical region, thereby generating an optical pulse whose temporal electric field envelope replicates the temporal profile of the real THz electric field. This optical envelope is characterised via an autocorrelation based FROG measurement, hence revealing the THz temporal profile. The combination of a narrow-bandwidth, long duration, optical probe and self-referenced FROG makes the technique inherently immune to timing jitter between the optical probe and THz pulse, and may find particular application where the THz field is not initially generated via ultrashort laser methods, such as the measurement of longitudinal electron bunch profiles in particle accelerators.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to AP
