Commercialisation performance has emerged as an important objective of universities apart from teaching and research to contribute to the economic development. The main purpose for universities to engage in commercialisation of research is to generate revenue and to rely less on public funding. However, many universities are facing challenges to achieve the targeted level of commercialisation and showing low commercialisation output. Current literature reveals that university incubators and university-industry linkages can influence commercialisation performance. Nevertheless, there are a very few empirical studies on the effectiveness of university incubators and university-industry linkages for commercialisation performance. The study investigated the relationships of university incubators and university-industry linkages with commercialisation performance and the moderating effects of financial resources. A questionnairesurvey based on quantitative research design was used to collect data through multistage sampling procedure from 347 respondents of 118 tenant firms at ten Pakistani universities. Structural equation modelling (SEM) technique using AMOS 22 software was employed to test the validity of measurement and structural model of the study. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used in testing the measurement model. The direct relationships between university incubators, university-industry linkages and commercialisation performance and interaction effects of financial resources were analysed in the structural model. The results of the study showed that university incubators and university-industry linkages have a positive relationship with commercialisation performance. Moreover, financial resources moderated the relationship between university incubators, university-industry linkages and commercialisation performance. Based on the findings of the study, it is suggested that university incubators and universityindustry linkages can be stimulated with the provision of financial resources to raise commercialisation output. In addition, this study would be helpful for universities, government and industries to make strategic decisions to stimulate commercialisation performance at the optimum level for the benefit of society

The paper argues that universities would enhance their participation through an effective and well-integrated incubation system for the development of sustainable entrepreneurial society. This study reviews the shifting trend of universities in society from teaching to research and development, innovation, entrepreneurship, and recently to facilitate an entrepreneurial society by promoting entrepreneurial culture and institutional development. It is categorically accepted by researchers that the 21st century will rely on knowledge, innovation, entrepreneurship, and business incubators. However, universities are lacking to contribute with full strength in research commercialization, entrepreneurship and economic growth. In this study, the strengths and weaknesses of university incubators are highlighted to enhance their efficacy for a better economic output. University incubators provide a facilitative environment for revenue generation by ensuring a cloud with financial, legal and technical support for a win-win interaction between universities, business tycoons, government and community. The ideas of human capital, knowledge and, research and development have evolved the economies towards knowledge based economies by having creativity, innovation, knowledge transfer, information access and supportive infrastructure. In an entrepreneurial society, universities move one step ahead by structuring the mechanisms to facilitate entrepreneurial culture and, creating institutes and leaders. Finally, the study presents some future directions for university incubators with policy recommendations. Islamic Leasing and Auto Financing System in Pakistan in Compliance with Islamic Sharia

    Get PDF
The basic concept of Islamic banking which is also known as 'INTEREST-FREE BANKING' is based on basic ethical standards with just one main difference- Muslims are not allowed paying or receiving interest. This does not mean that business activities or making a profit are not encouraged, they are but as long as they donā€™t involve interest in any form. To fulfill this purpose, the Islamic financial institutions to satisfy these requirements have introduced financial instruments. An example that can be seen is that equity financing is used instead of debt financing. Furthermore, instead of giving a fixed interest rate on the savings account, Islamic banks offer a share of the bank's profit, as a return on deposits and this is around 5% annually. Islamic Bankā€™s ā€˜Car Ijarahā€™ has been designed according to the principles of Islam and is completely interest-free. Moreover the Ijarah contract and other documentation also comply with Shariah requirements. On the other hand, a conventional car-financing scheme is actually an Interest based loan given by the financial institution and interest is charged on that loan. Also, in conventional car-leasing schemes, the lease contract is not in compliance with Islamic Shariah and has Riba and other un-Islamic elements in it. The word Riba means excess increase or addition. Interpreted in Shariah, it means any excess compensation without any due consideration (consideration does not include time value of money). An Islamic alternative to conventional car financing is Islamic CAR IJARAH, which meets the principals of Islamic Shari'ah. IJARAH is an Arabic term with origins in Islamic Fiqah, meaning to give something to rent

In recent years, commercialization has gained significant importance due to its active participation in knowledge transfer, economic growth, job creation and entrepreneurship. Whereas the role of university incubators and technology parks to excel commercialization has also much evidence. This study reviews the roles, practices, functions, factors and dimensions of the commercialization, university incubators and technology parks. During review, it come to surface that property development, networking with local and international markets, research and development, proximity to university, firmā€™s clustering, provision of advanced equipments, managerial support, faculty and students, and institutional reputation are the most important elements of university incubators and technology parks to promote commercialization. However, various challenges such as lack of human expertise and insufficient financial capital are still exists which requires to be further studied to upraise the commercialization efficacy

Background and objective: Dengue virus infections (Dengue) have become increasingly common in Pakistan and can result in case fatalities if not managed appropriately. Patients with Dengue virus infection may be asymptomatic or present with Dengue fever (DF), Dengue with warning signs (DWS) or severe Dengue (SD). Severity in Dengue is coincident with an exacerbated production of lymphocyte-induced cytokines and chemokines which are associated with plasma leakage. We investigated the association of circulating levels of cytokines such as Interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and CXCL-10 in Dengue patients with differing severity of disease.Material and methods: Dengue infection was confirmed by testing for human IgM to the Dengue virus. Dengue patients (n=58) and healthy controls (n=33) were recruited. Dengue patients were grouped into those with DF (n=39), DWS (n=15) and SD (n=4). Serum IL-6, TNFĪ± and CXCL10 levels were tested by ELISA. The Mann Whitney U test was used for statistical analysis.Result: Circulating levels of TNFĪ± (pā‰¤0.001) and CXCL10 (pā‰¤0.001) levels were increased in Dengue patients as compared with controls. When patients were stratified for disease severity, it was observed that CXCL10 was increased in DWS as compared to DF (p=0.046). IL-6 levels were increased in patients with SD as compared to those with DWS (p=0.044). TNFĪ± levels were not found to differ between different groups of Dengue patients. Conclusion: Raised CXCL10 and TNFĪ± levels were associated with increased clinical severity of Dengue infection and probably increased disease progression due to excessive inflammation and increased vascular changes in the patients

Explaining venture capital and technology commercialization in EU countries through dynamic modeling

    Get PDF
Technology commercialization is envisioned as an important indicator of economic growth through academic environment. The assurance of financial capital to accelerate the technology commercialization is a big challenge for European countries and above that, European Venture Capital (VC) market has not been fully exploited according to its potential. Using a dynamic model approach on 21 European Union countries data from 2007 to 2013, we found an empirical stance for an interaction between research and development (R&D) expenditure and VC for accelerating technology commercialization in the form of contemporary patents and startups. The results depict that venture capitalists are more oriented towards startups as compared to patenting activity. The application of dynamic model approach helped to generalize the results across Europe and for other developed countries. Particularly, the study argues that a contemporary knowledge and simulation of VC in framing the innovation system and promising the business formation is much desired. In line with the perspective of innovation led ecosystem, an active contribution and understanding of VC would also be acknowledged. (C) 2018 Published by Future Academy www.FutureAcademy.org.U

Haleji lake, Thatta, Sindh, has been affected by water pollution in the past decades. This study focuses on mapping water pollution at Haleji lake using turbidity as the pollution indicator. In this study, an algorithm was developed by correlating satellite reflectance data and in-situ turbidity measurements using regression analysis. The determination coefficient R2 of the developed algorithm showed a value of 0.83 that is evidence of a good correlation between field-based and mapped turbidity. Moreover, a temporal analysis was carried out using the same algorithm for the years 1999 and 2011. Results of temporal analysis confirmed that the turbidity levels in Haleji lake have increased from below 5 NTU to around 15 ā€“ 30 NTU. This is a clear sign of lake pollution in the interim of the past twelve years
