    The Solar-System-Scale Disk Around AB Aurigae

    The young star AB Aurigae is surrounded by a complex combination of gas-rich and dust dominated structures. The inner disk which has not been studied previously at sufficient resolution and imaging dynamic range seems to contain very little gas inside a radius of least 130 astronomical units (AU) from the star. Using adaptive-optics coronagraphy and polarimetry we have imaged the dust in an annulus between 43 and 302 AU from the star, a region never seen before. An azimuthal gap in an annulus of dust at a radius of 102 AU, along with a clearing at closer radii inside this annulus, suggests the formation of at least one small body at an orbital distance of about 100 AU. This structure seems consistent with crude models of mean motion resonances, or accumulation of material at two of the Lagrange points relative to the putative object and the star. We also report a low significance detection of a point source in this outer annulus of dust. This source may be an overdensity in the disk due to dust accreting onto an unseen companion. An alternate interpretation suggests that the object's mass is between 5 and 37 times the mass of Jupiter.     Characterization of HDS/HDN active sites in cluster-derived and conventionally-prepared sulfide catalysts

    The catalytic and sorptive properties of a series of sulfide cluster-derived catalysts were compared to those of an analogous series of conventionally-prepared sulfides. The cluster-derived and conventionally-prepared catalysts had similar hydrotreatment activities and chemisorbed similar amounts of O2 and NO. From infrared spectroscopy, it was observed that the clusters retained much of their character upon adsorption, and that the CO ligands were lost upon heating up to 350 K. Nitric oxide chemisorbed onto the bimetallic cluster-derived catalysts was initially associated with the Co sites then shifted to the Mo sites upon heating, indicating that the promoter and Mo were in close proximity. For the conventionally-prepared materials, NO adsorption suggested that the promoted and unpromoted sites behaved independently. Nitric oxide was more strongly held to the unpromoted sites in both the cluster-derived and conventionally-prepared materials. Thiophene adsorbed onto the cluster-derived and conventionally-prepared catalysts gave rise to nearly identical infrared spectra. Upon heating, the thiophene peaks disappeared and were replaced by peaks that we have attributed to a linear olefin, which is noteworthy since 1-butene was the primary product from thiophene HDS.     Evidence-based implementation practices applied to the intensive treatment of eating disorders: Summary of research and illustration of principles using a case example

    Implementation of evidence‐based practices (EBPs) in intensive treatment settings poses a major challenge in the field of psychology. This is particularly true for eating disorder (ED) treatment, where multidisciplinary care is provided to a severe and complex patient population; almost no data exist concerning best practices in these settings. We summarize the research on EBP implementation science organized by existing frameworks and illustrate how these practices may be applied using a case example. We describe the recent successful implementation of EBPs in a community‐based intensive ED treatment network, which recently adapted and implemented transdiagnostic, empirically supported treatment for emotional disorders across its system of residential and day‐hospital programs. The research summary, implementation frameworks, and case example may inform future efforts to implement evidence‐based practice in intensive treatment settings.Published versio

    Paper Session II-A - Polyimide Foam Insulation Materials for Aerospace Vehicles and Spaceport Applications

    Advancements in high temperature materials by NASA have led to the development of polyimide foam systems with very attractive properties. The properties generated demonstrate the suitability of these materials for use as insulation for cryogenic fuel tanks on next generation vehicles, commercial and military ships, and potentially commercial aircraft. The significance of structural polyimide foams can be realized with a reduction in the overall weight of a launch vehicle. Due to a polyimide\u27 s high operating temperature ( \u27 \u27 260°C) structural polyimide foams can potentially reduce the amount of Thermal Protection System (TPS) and TPS integration structure that is required on launch vehicles. The lowtemperature elasticity of other polyimide foams is an enabling feature for many new cryogenic applications. These high performance materials also have properties that fulfill the demanding upcoming needs in ground support equipment for a Spaceport Technology Center. In a research study performed by Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and Langley Research Center (LaRC), polyimide foams were investigated for their physical, mechanical, thermal, and flammability properties. Variations in chemical structure, cell surface area, cell content and density on the resultant physical properties of the foams were studied. Data generated from this research revealed vital information involving foam technology and the interplay of factors such as foam density, open-closed cell content, surface area, and cell structure on the overall performance of the material. By controlling these parameters, new thermal insulation systems based on polyimide foam materials can be designed to meet demanding applications for spaceports and space vehicles

    Evaluations of land cover risk factors for canine leptospirosis: 94 cases (2002–2009)

    Associations of land cover/land use variables and the presence of dogs in urban vs. rural address locations were evaluated retrospectively as potential risk factors for canine leptospirosis in Kansas and Nebraska using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The sample included 94 dogs positive for leptospirosis predominantly based on a positive polymerase chain reaction test for leptospires in urine, isolation of leptospires on urine culture, a single reciprocal serum titer of 12,800 or greater, or a four-fold rise in reciprocal serum titers over a 2–4 weeks period; and 185 dogs negative for leptospirosis based on a negative polymerase chain reaction test and reciprocal serum titers less than 400. Land cover features from 2001 National Land Cover Dataset and 2001 Kansas Gap Analysis Program datasets around geocoded addresses of case/control locations were extracted using 2500 m buffers, and the presence of dogs’ address locations within urban vs. rural areas were estimated in GIS. Multivariate logistic models were used to determine the risk of different land cover variables and address locations to dogs. Medium intensity urban areas (OR = 1.805, 95% C.I. = 1.396, 2.334), urban areas in general (OR = 2.021, 95% C.I. = 1.360, 3.003), and having urban address locations (OR = 3.732, 95% C.I. = 1.935, 7.196 entire study region), were significant risk factors for canine leptospirosis. Dogs regardless of age, sex and breed that live in urban areas are at higher risk of leptospirosis and vaccination should be considered

    The use of sulfide cluster-derived catalysts to understand the promotional effect in hydrotreatment catalysis

    Sulfide cluster-derived ensembles are promising models of the active sites in commercial hydrotreatment catalysts. A series of sulfide clusters were adsorbed intact onto high-surface-area Γ-alumina, magnesium oxide and activated carbon supports, then pretreated to produce highly dispersed catalytic ensembles with sizes similar to those of their precursor clusters. The activities of the bimetallic cluster-derived catalysts were significantly higher than those of the monometallic catalysts. We took this as evidence that direct interactions between molybdenum and the promoter element cause the promotional effect observed in commercial hydrotreatment catalysts. The hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation activities correlated with the extent of molybdenum reduction.     Aperture Mask Interferometry with an Integral Field Spectrograph

    A non-redundant pupil mask placed in front of a low-resolution integral field spectrograph (IFS) adds a spectral dimension to high angular resolution imaging behind adaptive optics systems. We demonstrate the first application of this technique, using the spectroscopic binary star system β CrB as our target. The mask and IFS combination enabled us to measure the first low-resolution spectrum of the F3-F5 dwarf secondary component of β CrB, at an angular separation 141 mas from its A5-A7Vp primary star. To record multi-wavelength closure phases, we collected interferograms simultaneously in 23 spectral channels spanning the J and H bands (1.1 μm-1.8 μm), using the Project 1640 IFS behind the 249-channel PalAO adaptive optics system on the Hale telescope at Palomar Observatory. In addition to providing physical information about the source, spectrally resolved mask fringes have the potential to enhance detection limits over single filter observations. While the overall dynamic range of our observation suffers from large systematic calibration errors, the information gleaned from the full channel range improves the dynamic range by a factor of 3 to 4 over the best single channel

    The Lyot project: toward exoplanet imaging and spectroscopy

    Among the adaptive optics systems available to astronomers, the US Air Force Advanced Electro-Optical System (AEOS) is unique because it delivers very high order wave front correction. The Lyot Project includes the construction and installation of the world’s first diffraction-limited, optimized coronagraph that exploits the full astronomical potential of AEOS and represents a critical step toward the long-term goal of directly imaging and studying extrasolar planets (a.k.a. “exoplanets”). We provide an update on the Project, whose coronagraph saw first light in March 2004. The coronagraph is operating at least as well as predicted by simulations, and a survey of nearby stars has begun

    The Lyot Project Direct Imaging Survey of Substellar Companions: Statistical Analysis and Information from Nondetections

    The Lyot project used an optimized Lyot coronagraph with Extreme Adaptive Optics at the 3.63m Advanced Electro-Optical System telescope (AEOS) to observe 86 stars from 2004 to 2007. In this paper we give an overview of the survey results and a statistical analysis of the observed nondetections around 58 of our targets to place constraints on the population of substellar companions to nearby stars. The observations did not detect any companion in the substellar regime. Since null results can be as important as detections, we analyzed each observation to determine the characteristics of the companions that can be ruled out. For this purpose we use a Monte Carlo approach to produce artificial companions, and determine their detectability by comparison with the sensitivity curve for each star. All the non-detection results are combined using a Bayesian approach and we provide upper limits on the population of giant exoplanets and brown dwarfs for this sample of stars. Our nondetections confirm the rarity of brown dwarfs around solar-like stars and we constrain the frequency of massive substellar companions (M>40Mjup) at orbital separation between and 10 and 50 AU to be <20%.Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables.
