    Reflectance Spectroscopy of Palagonite and Iron-Rich Montmorillonite Clay Mixtures: Implications for the Surface Composition of Mars

    Mixtures of a Hawaiian palagonite and an iron-rich, montmorillonite clay (15.8 +/- 0.4 wt% Fe as Fe2O3) were evaluated as Mars surface spectral analogs from their diffuse reflectance spectra. The presence of the 2.2 microns absorption band in the reflectance spectrum of clays and its absence in the Mars spectrum have been interpreted as indicating that highly crystalline aluminous hydroxylated clays cannot be a major mineral component of the soil on Mars. The palagonite sample used in this study does not show this absorption feature in its spectrum. In mixtures of palagonite and iron-rich montmorillonite, the 2.2 microns Al-OH clay lattice band is not seen below 15 wt% montmorillonite. This suggests the possibility that iron-rich montmorillonite clay may be present in the soil of Mars at up to 15 wt% in combination with palagonite, and remain undetected in remotely sensed spectra of Mars

    Meatpacking consolidated rapidly in the last two decades: slaughter plants became much larger, and concentration increased as smaller firms left the industry. We use establishment-based data from the U.S. Census Bureau to describe consolidation and to identify the roles of scale economies and technological change in driving consolidation. Through the 1970's, larger plants paid higher wages, generating a pecuniary scale diseconomy that largely offset the cost advantages that technological scale economies offered large plants. The larger plants' wage premium disappeared in the 1980's, and technological change created larger and more extensive technological scale economies.     The characterisation, modelling and detection of series arc faults in aircraft electrical power distribution systems featuring solid state power controllers (SSPCs)

    Electrical power demand in aircraft has grown significantly over the last century, and this trend continues with the More Electric Aircraft (MEA) and All Electric Aircraft (AEA) concepts. Higher voltages such as 270VDC are required to deliver additional power to loads and to optimise aircraft mass. Increased voltages inflict more stress on the Electrical Wiring Interconnect System (EWIS) and increase the impact of series arc faults caused by wiring defects. Solid State Power Controllers (SSPCs) are used to provide fast protection in high voltage distribution systems. The aim of this work is the characterisation, modelling, simulation and detection of series arc faults in 28VDC and 270VDC electrical power distribution systems featuring SSPCs. The majority of passive detection schemes in the literature were designed based on empirical data rather than well characterised electric arc parameters, and thus nuisance trips are unavoidable. To address this series arc faults in 28VDC and 270VDC solid state power distribution systems were characterised using the SAE5692 "Loose terminal" method [8], and it was found that 270VDC arc faults cause a minimal ~5.6% reduction in loop current and load voltage compared with ~54% in 28VDC systems. SSPC output voltage transients caused by series arcs were found to be limited by the presence of SSPC snubbers. Increasing the system loop inductance was found to improve series arc stability resulting in fewer arc quench events. Increasing the capacitive load reduces arc stability and causes arcs to quench more readily thus simplifying detection. These results were later used to experimentally validate a novel series arc fault SPICE model based on the static Nottingham V-I model [9] and wider solid state electrical system model. The arc current and SSPC output voltage results were also used to create a prototype passive series arc fault detection system, which has been demonstrated to SAE5692 under laboratory conditions [8]. A novel multilayer PCB current sensor was developed and experimentally validated for this prototype. To further reduce nuisance trips an innovative active arc fault perturbation scheme was simulated and experimentally demonstrated using SSPC modulation to stimulate and detect arc quench. Another novel complementary series arc fault prevention / confirmation scheme was simulated and experimentally validated using SSPC leakage currents. To minimise nuisance trips due to manufacturing and installation errors a unique Built-In Test (BIT) scheme was also developed and experimentally validated using the SSPC to create artificial current and voltage stimuli

    Palytoxin Found in Palythoa sp. Zoanthids (Anthozoa, Hexacorallia) Sold in the Home Aquarium Trade

    Zoanthids (Anthozoa, Hexacorallia) are colonial anemones that contain one of the deadliest toxins ever discovered, palytoxin (LD50 in mice 300 ng/kg), but it is generally believed that highly toxic species are not sold in the home aquarium trade. We previously showed that an unintentionally introduced zoanthid in a home aquarium contained high concentrations of palytoxin and was likely responsible for a severe respiratory reaction when an individual attempted to eliminate the contaminant colonies using boiling water. To assess the availability and potential exposure of palytoxin to marine aquarium hobbyists, we analyzed zoanthid samples collected from local aquarium stores for palytoxin using liquid chromatography and high resolution mass spectrometry and attempted to identify the specimens through genetic analysis of 16S and cytochrome c oxidase 1 (COI) markers. We found four specimens of the same apparent species of zoanthid, that we described previously to be responsible for a severe respiratory reaction in a home aquarium, to be available in three aquarium stores in the Washington D.C. area. We found all of these specimens (n = 4) to be highly toxic with palytoxin or palytoxin-like compounds (range 0.5–3.5 mg crude toxin/g zoanthid). One of the most potent non-protein compounds ever discovered is present in dangerous quantities in a select species of zoanthid commonly sold in the home aquarium trade

    Chromospheric jets around the edges of sunspots

    Aims. Evidence is beginning to be put forward that demonstrates the role of the chromosphere in supplying energy and mass to the corona. We aim to asses the role of chromospheric jets in active region dynamics. Methods. Using a combination of the Hinode/SOT Ca II H and TRACE 1550 Å and 1600 Å filters we examine chromospheric jets situated at the edge of a sunspot. Results. Analysis reveals a near continuous series of jets, that raise chromospheric material into the low corona above a sunspot. The jets have average rise speeds of 30 km/s and a range of 10−100 km/s. Enhanced emission observed at the jets leading edge suggests the formation of a shock front. Increased emission in TRACE bandpasses above the sunspot and the disappearance of the jets from the Ca II filter suggests that some of the chromospheric jet material is at least heated to ∼ 0.1 MK. The evidence suggests that the jets could be a mechanism which provides a steady, low-level heating for active region features
