    Portal Project Teaching Database

    No full text
<p>The Portal Project Teaching Database is a simplified version of the Portal Project Database designed for teaching. It provides a real world example of life-history, population, and ecological data, with sufficient complexity to teach many aspects of data analysis and management, but with many complexities removed to allow students to focus on the core ideas and skills being taught.</p> <p>The database is currently available in csv, json, and sqlite.</p> <p>This database is not designed for research as it intentionally removes some of the real-world complexities. The original database is published at Ecological Archives(http://esapubs.org/archive/ecol/E090/118/) and this version of the database should be used for research purposes. The Python code used for converting the original database to this teach version is included as 'create_portal_teach_dataset.py'. Suggested changes or additions to this dataset can be requested or contributed in the project GitHub repository(https://github.com/weecology/portal-teachingdb).</p

ObjectiveTo assess the prevalence of menstrual disorders and the perceived effect of menstrual cycles upon performance in elite athletes.MethodologyA longitudinal survey in the form of a questionnaire was sent to female track and field athletes at British Athletics every 6 months, over a five-year period between 1st October 2014 and 1st October 2019 in the United Kingdom (UK).Results128 athletes completed an average of 4.2 ± 2.9 questionnaires across the study period. The mean age of menarche was 14.2 ± 1.4 years, 13.4 ± 1.3 years and 12.8 ± 1.4 years in endurance, power, and thrower athletes respectively (p ConclusionThis data highlights the complex interrelationship between women's health and elite athletic performance. Athletes perceive a negative impact from their menstrual cycles upon performance with a desire to manage these more effectively, particularly during competition. Female reproductive health expertise in the multi-disciplinary management of elite athletes is required.</p

<p>(A) BSO (10µM) pre-treated and untreated dHL60 cells were treated with or without desipramine (10 µM, 1 hour) and 5µM SFN. Cells (1×107) were collected on ice-cold PBS, pelleted and lysed before analysing ASMase activity. (B) LRs from dHL60 cells were extracted with MNE buffer containing 1% triton X-100 and applied to discontinuous sucrose gradients, as described in Methods. Proteins were extracted and immunoblotted using anti-flotillin-1 as the raft protein detecting antibody. (C) Quantification of flotillin in lipid raft fractions 3 and 4 compared to total expression.</p
