Unusual Features of the Colonies of the Common Western Atlantic Garden Eel (Heterocongrinae), with a New Record for Bermuda
Colonies of the common western Atlantic garden eel (Heteroconger longissimus) recently discovered In Bermuda have a larger size than anywhere in the Caribbean (a single specimen from Puerto Rico being exceptional) and most members of the colonies occur as male-female pairs in closely adjacent burrows, whereas pairing otherwise is unknown in this species. The heads of a minority of adults of both sexes develop prominent, fluid-filled, blister-like structures that, at their fullest form, significantly swell the size of the head. This condition has been found In Bermudian and Caribbean colonies of H. longissimus as well as in two species of Heteroconger from the Pacific
Teachability in leading organizational mentees: A narrative analysis of reverse mentoring as reflexive moments for coping in personal crisis
Mentoring is often situated in leadership and coaching literature as a formal, strategic and a beneficial experience. Additional, studies indicate that mentor/mentee relationships can cause tension and even workplace harassment. Most of these studies focus on the power, whether negative or positive, of the leader versus the mentored. This study synthesizes stories lived and stories told using narrative analysis to balance how reverse mentoring simultaneously assists mentors and mentees in making sense of complex communication environments. Highlighting teachability as a chief characteristic of leading, reverse mentoring co-constructs new narratives for both mentor and mentee to cope with crisis situations. Reciprocal openness to divergent perspectives lends itself to moments in which stories merge and cross to influence both organizational leader and mentee. Thus, bottom-up power is present, not only in follower resistance, but in follower and/or protégé influence in the co-constructing of new organizational and personal narratives
Evaluation of the Water Footprint of Beef Cattle Production in Nebraska
Data were compiled on feed usage to model the amount of water needed to produce beef in typical Nebraska production systems. Production systems where cows were wintered on corn residue utilized 18% less water than systems utilizing native range as a wintering source, because of water allocations. Therefore, the water footprint (gallons of water required to produce one pound of boneless meat) was decreased by 18%. In addition, increasing the dietary inclusion of distillers grains from 0% to 40% decreased the water footprint in the finishing phase by 29%, again based on water allocation. Utilizing corn residue and distillers grains in Nebraska beef cattle systems decreases the overall water footprint of production. Additionally, the water footprint of the systems analyzed was 80% green water as rain, minimizing the environmental impact of beef production on freshwater use and ecological water balance

Age-Related Increases in Verbal Knowledge Are Not Associated With Word Finding Problems in the Cam-CAN Cohort: What You Know Won't Hurt You.
Objective: We tested the claim that age-related increases in knowledge interfere with word retrieval, leading to word finding failures. We did this by relating a measure of crystallized intelligence to tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) states and picture naming accuracy. Method: Participants were from a large (N = 708), cross-sectional (aged 18-88 years), population-based sample from the Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience cohort (Cam-CAN; www.cam-can.com). They completed (a) the Spot-the-Word Test (STW), a measure of crystallized intelligence in which participants circled the real word in word/nonword pairs, (b) a TOT-inducing task, and (c) a picture naming task. Results: Age and STW independently predicted TOTs, with higher TOTs for older adults and for participants with lower STW scores. Tests of a moderator model examining interactions between STW and age indicated that STW was a significant negative predictor of TOTs in younger adults, but with increasing age, the effect size gradually approached zero. Results using picture naming accuracy replicated these findings. Discussion: These results do not support the hypothesis that lifelong knowledge acquisition leads to interference that causes an age-related increase in TOTs. Instead, crystallized intelligence supports successful word retrieval, although this relationship weakens across adulthood
A First Look at the Auriga-California Giant Molecular Cloud With Herschel and the CSO: Census of the Young Stellar Objects and the Dense Gas
We have mapped the Auriga/California molecular cloud with the Herschel PACS
and SPIRE cameras and the Bolocam 1.1 mm camera on the Caltech Submillimeter
Observatory (CSO) with the eventual goal of quantifying the star formation and
cloud structure in this Giant Molecular Cloud (GMC) that is comparable in size
and mass to the Orion GMC, but which appears to be forming far fewer stars. We
have tabulated 60 compact 70/160um sources that are likely pre-main-sequence
objects and correlated those with Spitzer and WISE mid-IR sources. At 1.1 mm we
find 18 cold, compact sources and discuss their properties. The most important
result from this part of our study is that we find a modest number of
additional compact young objects beyond those identified at shorter wavelengths
with Spitzer. We also describe the dust column density and temperature
structure derived from our photometric maps. The column density peaks at a few
x 10^22 cm^-2 (N_H2) and is distributed in a clear filamentary structure along
which nearly all the pre-main-sequence objects are found. We compare the YSO
surface density to the gas column density and find a strong non-linear
correlation between them. The dust temperature in the densest parts of the
filaments drops to ~10K from values ~ 14--15K in the low density parts of the
cloud. We also derive the cumulative mass fraction and probability density
function of material in the cloud which we compare with similar data on other

Effects of Label-Dose Permethrin Administration on Reproductive Function and Embryo Quality on Superovulated Beef Heifers
Commercial pyrethroid pour-ons are commonly appliedin cow-calf operations to eliminate the potential for insectborne diseases and to improve productivity. However,recent literature has focused on potential negativereproductive effects in the bull after exposure to pyrethroids.While the female bovine has been primarily neglected fromthe debated pyrethroid concern on reproduction, literature inmice and rats have reported potential endocrine disruptionof sex steroids resulting from pyrethroid exposure, withpotential detrimental effects on female fertility. Theobjective was to study the effects of a commercialpyrethroid-based pour-on product, permethrin, onreproductive performance in superovulated beef heifers byassessing steroid biosynthesis and embryo quality. It washypothesized that exposure to pyrethroid pour-on at labeldose would cause minimal effects on embryoquantity/quality and steroidogenesis in the female bovine.Results from this study revealed pyrethroid-treated heifershad a tendency for reduced progesterone, but embryoquantity and quality were not affected compared to control
Molecular Line Observations of the Small Protostellar Group L1251B
We present molecular line observations of L1251B, a small group of pre- and
protostellar objects, and its immediate environment in the dense C18O core
L1251E. These data are complementary to near-infrared, submillimeter and
millimeter continuum observations reported by Lee et al. (2006, ApJ, 648, 491;
Paper I). The single-dish data of L1251B described here show very complex
kinematics including infall, rotation and outflow motions, and the
interferometer data reveal these in greater detail. Interferometer data of N2H+
1-0 suggest a very rapidly rotating flattened envelope between two young
stellar objects, IRS1 and IRS2. Also, interferometer data of CO 2-1 resolve the
outflow associated with L1251B seen in single-dish maps into a few narrow and
compact components. Furthermore, the high resolution data support recent
theoretical studies of molecular depletions and enhancements that accompany the
formation of protostars within dense cores. Beyond L1251B, single-dish data are
also presented of a dense core located ~150" to the east that, in Paper I, was
detected at 850 micron but has no associated point sources at near- and
mid-infrared wavelengths. The relative brightness between molecules, which have
different chemical timescales, suggests it is less chemically evolved than
L1251B. This core may be a site for future star formation, however, since line
profiles of HCO+, CS, and HCN show asymmetry with a stronger blue peak, which
