    Anisotropic diffusion in confined colloidal dispersions: The evanescent diffusivity

    We employ an analogy to traditional dynamic light scattering to describe the inhomogeneous and anisotropic diffusion of colloid particles near a solid boundary measured via evanescent wave dynamic light scattering. Following this approach, we generate new expressions for the short-time self- and collective diffusivities of colloidal dispersions with arbitrary volume fraction. We use these expressions in combination with accelerated Stokesian dynamics simulations to calculate the diffusivities in the limit of large and small scattering wave numbers for evanescent penetration depths ranging from four particle radii to one-fifth of a particle radius and volume fractions from 10% to 40%. We show that at high volume fractions, and larger penetration depths, the boundaries have little effect on the dynamics of the suspension parallel to the wall since, to a first approximation, the boundary acts hydrodynamically much as another nearby particle. However, near and normal to the wall, the diffusivity shows a strong dependence on penetration depth for all volume fractions. This is due to the lubrication interactions between the particles and the boundary as the particle moves relative to the wall. These results are novel and comprehensive with respect to the range of penetration depth and volume fraction and provide a complete determination of the effect of hydrodynamic interactions on colloidal diffusion adjacent to a rigid boundary

    Mutual Fund Expense Disclosures: A Behavioral Perspective

    Mutual funds have enjoyed phenomenal growth with their numbers exceeding the number of public companies and their assets aggregating in excess of $9 trillion. Increasingly they are the investment instrument of choice by the proverbial widows, widowers and orphans, and a few school teachers are included as well. But how are best can that choice be one that is not only informed but informed in a way more likely to elicit a wise decision? This paper examines from a behavioral perspective how regulation can best disclose information related to two key factors for investors to compare competing mutual funds: fund returns and fund expenses. Our analysis reflects that the current disclosure process is deficient because it fails to reflect the insights of research on judgment and decision making, and particularly the need to distinguish between the availability of information and its processability by its user. The message of our article is straightforward: if regulators adhered to the insights provided by our paper, not only investors, but also the fund\u27s directors, would be greatly empowered so that better returns and lower costs could be expected

    Simulation of hydrodynamically interacting particles near a no-slip boundary

    The dynamics of spherical particles near a single plane wall are computed using an extension of the Stokesian dynamics method that includes long-range many-body and pairwise lubrication interactions between the spheres and the wall in Stokes flow. Extra care is taken to ensure that the mobility and resistance tensors are symmetric, positive, and definite—something which is ineluctable for particles in low-Reynolds-number flows. We discuss why two previous simulation methods for particles near a plane wall, one using multipole expansions and the other using the Rotne-Prager tensor, fail to produce symmetric resistance and mobility tensors. Additionally, we offer some insight on how the Stokesian dynamics paradigm might be extended to study the dynamics of particles in any confining geometry

    Particle motion between parallel walls: Hydrodynamics and simulation

    The low-Reynolds-number motion of a single spherical particle between parallel walls is determined from the exact reflection of the velocity field generated by multipoles of the force density on the particle’s surface. A grand mobility tensor is constructed and couples these force multipoles to moments of the velocity field in the fluid surrounding the particle. Every element of the grand mobility tensor is a finite, ordered sum of inverse powers of the distance between the walls. These new expressions are used in a set of Stokesian dynamics simulations to calculate the translational and rotational velocities of a particle settling between parallel walls and the Brownian drift force on a particle diffusing between the walls. The Einstein correction to the Newtonian viscosity of a dilute suspension that accounts for the change in stress distribution due to the presence of the channel walls is determined. It is proposed how the method and results can be extended to computations involving many particles and periodic simulations of suspensions in confined geometries

    A graphical, rule based robotic interface system

    The ability of a human to take control of a robotic system is essential in any use of robots in space in order to handle unforeseen changes in the robot's work environment or scheduled tasks. But in cases in which the work environment is known, a human controlling a robot's every move by remote control is both time consuming and frustrating. A system is needed in which the user can give the robotic system commands to perform tasks but need not tell the system how. To be useful, this system should be able to plan and perform the tasks faster than a telerobotic system. The interface between the user and the robot system must be natural and meaningful to the user. A high level user interface program under development at the University of Alabama, Huntsville, is described. A graphical interface is proposed in which the user selects objects to be manipulated by selecting representations of the object on projections of a 3-D model of the work environment. The user may move in the work environment by changing the viewpoint of the projections. The interface uses a rule based program to transform user selection of items on a graphics display of the robot's work environment into commands for the robot. The program first determines if the desired task is possible given the abilities of the robot and any constraints on the object. If the task is possible, the program determines what movements the robot needs to make to perform the task. The movements are transformed into commands for the robot. The information defining the robot, the work environment, and how objects may be moved is stored in a set of data bases accessible to the program and displayable to the user

    Structural performance of two aerobrake hexagonal heat shield panel concepts

    Structural sizing and performance are presented for two structural concepts for an aerobrake hexagonal heat shield panel. One concept features a sandwich construction with an aluminum honeycomb core and thin quasi-isotropic graphite-epoxy face sheets. The other concept features a skin-rib isogrid construction with thin quasi-isotropic graphite-epoxy skins and graphite-epoxy ribs oriented at 0, +60, and -60 degs along the panel. Linear static, linear bifurcation buckling, and nonlinear static analyses were performed to compare the structural performance of the two panel concepts and assess their feasibility for a lunar transfer vehicle aerobrake application

    Time-Dependent Quotas for the Southern Bluefin Tuna Fishery

    It is now officially recognized by the governments of Australia and Japan that the southern bluefin tuna fishery has been overexploited and that harvests must be controlled. A dynamic programming model applicable to multicohort fisheries is developed for finding approximately optimal time-dependent quotas.
