A Definition of the Chidamber and Kemerer Metrics suite for UML. Technical Report NUIM-CS-TR-2006-03
Since there is no standard formalism for defining software
metrics, many of the measures that exist have some ambiguity in their
definitions which hinders their comparison and implementation. We address
this problem by presenting an approach for defining software metrics.
This approach is based on expressing the measures as Object Constraint
Language queries over a language metamodel. To illustrate the
approach, we specify how the Chidamber and Kemerer metrics suite can
be measured from Unified Modelling Language class diagrams by presenting
formal definitions for these metrics using the Unified Modelling
Language 2.0 metamodel
Using Classroom Response Technology To Create An Active Learning Environment In Marketing Classes
Classroom response systems (CRS), also called student/audience response systems or clickers, have been used by business instructors, particularly in larger classes, to allow instructors to ask students questions in class and have their responses immediately tabulated and reported electronically. While clickers have typically been used to measure attendance, gauge comprehension and test students, we propose that classroom response systems can also be used to effectively create an active learning environment. Specifically we detail the use of classroom response systems to utilize active learning in large classes (i.e., more than 70 students) through describing five sample CRS exercises in Marketing courses: Sequential Elimination, Why Do You Think That?, Experiential Exercises, What Would You Do?, and Forced Choice. These exercises though, could be adapted for use in other business classes
Some observations on the application of software metrics to UML models
In this position paper we discuss some of the existing work
on applying metrics to UML models, present some of our
own work in this area, and specify some topics for future
research that we regard as important

Evaluating Joseph Campbell\u27s Underexplored Ideas In the Light of Modern Psychology
Joseph Campbell was a scholar of mythology and comparative religion who attained great popularity by promoting the value of mythology in people\u27s lives. Interestingly, he attained this status even though there was little scientific evidence for his ideas. In recent years, researchers have begun to evaluate Campbell\u27s ideas in rigorous, empirical ways, with most of this research being focused on the implications of the hero\u27s journey. There are still a number of Campbell\u27s psychology-related ideas, however, that have not been evaluated scientifically. These are the ideas we evaluated in this paper. Because we focused on the underexplored ideas, we could find no research directly assessing them. So, we evaluated them indirectly, using research that seemed relevant but that was conducted for independent reasons. This evaluation led us to conclude that Campbell was right in many of his psychology-related ideas, and that researchers could benefit if they took these ideas seriously and incorporated them into their research and theorizin
Untargeted analysis of the airway proteomes of children with respiratory infections using mass spectrometry based proteomics
The upper airway – which consists mainly of the naso- and oro-pharynx - is the first point of contact between the respiratory system and microbial organisms that are ubiquitous in the environment. It has evolved highly specialised functions to address these constant threats whilst facilitating seamless respiratory exchange with the lower respiratory tract. Dysregulation of its critical homeostatic and defence functions can lead to ingress of pathogens into the lower respiratory tract, potentially leading to serious illness. Systems-wide proteomic tools may facilitate a better understanding of mechanisms in the upper airways in health and disease. In this study, we aimed to develop a mass spectrometry based proteomics method for characterizing the upper airways proteome. Naso- and oropharyngeal swab samples used in all our experiments had been eluted in the Universal Transport Media (UTM) containing significantly high levels of bovine serum albumin. Our proteomic experiments tested the optimal approach to characterize airway proteome on swab samples eluted in UTM based on the number of proteins identified without BSA depletion (Total proteome: Protocol A) and with its depletion using a commercial kit; Allprep, Qiagen (cellular proteome: Protocol B, Ci, and Cii). Observations and lessons drawn from protocol A, fed into the design and implementation of protocol B, and from B to protocol Ci and finally Cii. Label free proteome quantification was used in Protocol A (n = 6) and B (n = 4) while commercial TMT 10plex reagents were used for protocols Ci and ii (n = 83). Protocols Ci and ii were carried out under similar conditions except for the elution gradient: 3 h and 6 h respectively. Swab samples tested in this study were from infants and children with and without upper respiratory tract infections from Kilifi County Hospital on the Kenyan Coast. Protocol A had the least number of proteins identified (215) while B produced the highest number of protein identifications (2396). When Protocol B was modified through sample multiplexing with TMT to enable higher throughput (Protocol Ci), the number of protein identified reduced to 1432. Modification of protocol Ci by increasing the peptide elution time generated Protocol Cii that substantially increased the number of proteins identified to 1875. The coefficient of variation among the TMT runs in Protocol Cii was <20%. There was substantial overlap in the identity of proteins using the four protocols. Our method was were able to identify marker proteins characteristically expressed in the upper airway. We found high expression levels of signature nasopharyngeal and oral proteins, including BPIFA1/2 and AMY1A, as well as a high abundance of proteins related to innate and adaptive immune function in the upper airway. We have developed a sensitive systems-level proteomic assay for the systematic quantification of naso-oro-pharyngeal proteins. The assay will advance mechanistic studies of respiratory pathology, by providing an untargeted and hypothesis-free approach of examining the airway proteome
Demonstration of safety of intravenous immunoglobulin in geriatric patients in a long-term, placebo-controlled study of Alzheimer's disease.
INTRODUCTION:We present safety results from a study of Gammagard Liquid intravenous immunoglobulin (IGIV) in patients with probable Alzheimer's disease. METHODS:This was a placebo-controlled double-blind study. Subjects were randomized to 400 mg/kg (n = 127), 200 mg/kg (n = 135) IGIV, or to 0.25% human albumin (n = 121) administered every 2 weeks ± 7 days for 18 months. RESULTS:Elevated risk ratios of IGIV versus placebo included chills (3.85) in 9.5% of IGIV-treated subjects (all doses), compared to 2.5% of placebo-treated subjects, and rash (3.08) in 15.3% of IGIV-treated subjects versus 5.0% of subjects treated with placebo. Subjects in the highest IGIV dose group had the lowest proportion of SAEs considered related to product (2 of 127 [1.6%]). Subjects treated with IGIV experienced a lower rate of respiratory and all other infections compared to placebo. DISCUSSION:IGIV-treated subjects did not experience higher rates of renal failure, lung injury, or thrombotic events than the placebo group. There were no unexpected safety findings. IGIV was well tolerated throughout 18 months of treatment in subjects aged 50-89 years

Whole-genome sequence analysis shows that two endemic species of North American wolf are admixtures of the coyote and gray wolf.
Protection of populations comprising admixed genomes is a challenge under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), which is regarded as the most powerful species protection legislation ever passed in the United States but lacks specific provisions for hybrids. The eastern wolf is a newly recognized wolf-like species that is highly admixed and inhabits the Great Lakes and eastern United States, a region previously thought to be included in the geographic range of only the gray wolf. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has argued that the presence of the eastern wolf, rather than the gray wolf, in this area is grounds for removing ESA protection (delisting) from the gray wolf across its geographic range. In contrast, the red wolf from the southeastern United States was one of the first species protected under the ESA and was protected despite admixture with coyotes. We use whole-genome sequence data to demonstrate a lack of unique ancestry in eastern and red wolves that would not be expected if they represented long divergent North American lineages. These results suggest that arguments for delisting the gray wolf are not valid. Our findings demonstrate how a strict designation of a species under the ESA that does not consider admixture can threaten the protection of endangered entities. We argue for a more balanced approach that focuses on the ecological context of admixture and allows for evolutionary processes to potentially restore historical patterns of genetic variation
The Effect of Cluster Environment on Galaxy Evolution in the Pegasus I Cluster
We present neutral hydrogen observations of 54 galaxies in the Pegasus Cluster. The observations include single-dish H I measurements, obtained with the Arecibo telescope for all 54 galaxies in the sample, as well as H I images obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA) for 10 of these. The Arecibo profiles reveal an overall H I deficiency in the cluster, with similar to 40% of the galaxies in the core of the cluster showing modest deficiencies of typically a factor of 2-3. The HI morphology of so me galaxies shows that the HI disk is smaller than the optical disk and slightly offset from the stars. We find a correlation between HI deficiency and the ratio of the HI disk size to optical disk size. More HI deficient galaxies have relatively smaller HI disks, a configuration that is usually attributed to an interaction between the interstellar medium (ISM) of the galaxy and the hot intracluster med ium (ICM). Such a result is surprising since the Pegasus cluster has a low level of X-ray emission, and a low velocity dispersion. The low velocity dispersion, coupled with the lack of a dense hot ICM indicate that ram pressure stripping should not play a significant role in this environment. In addition, two of the galaxies, NGC7604 and NGC7648, are morphologically peculiar. Their peculiarities indicate contradictory scenarios of what is triggering their unusual star formation. Hα imaging, along with long-slit spectroscopy of NGC7648 reveal morphological features which point to a recent tidal interaction. On the other hand, Hα imaging of NGC7604 reveals a strong episode of star formation concentrated into an asymmetric arc, preferentially located on one side of the galaxy. VLA HI mapping shows the HI also highly concentrated into that region, suggestive of a ram pressure event. Our data indicate that ISM-ICM interactions may play a role in a wider variety of environments than suggested by simple ram pressure arguments
