    Blinking and normal ocular surface in school-aged children and the effects of age and screen time

    Purpose Baseline ocular surface characteristics in children require investigation. This study characterised blinking and relationships with ocular symptoms, tear film and digital device use. Methods 45 children aged 6-15 years (56% female) participated in a cross-sectional study. Ocular surface symptoms (Instant Ocular Symptoms Survey, Dry Eye Questionnaire 5, Symptoms Assessment in Dry Eye, Ocular Surface Disease Index, Ocular Comfort Index and Numerical Rating Scale) and clinical indices (lipid layer thickness, tear secretion and stability, meibomian gland) were assessed. Blink rate and interblink interval were measured in situ using a wearable eye-tracking headset (Pupil Labs GmbH, Germany). Associations between blinking, ocular surface, age, and digital device use (bivariate and partial correlations) and between automated and manually counted blink rate (Bland & Altman) were examined. Results Mean blink rate and interblink interval were 20.5±10.5 blinks/min and 2.9±1.9 s during conversation. There was no difference between automated and manual blink rate (p=0.78) and no relationship between blinking and digital device use, age or sex. Mean group symptoms were within normal range and not associated with clinical measurements including blinking. Greater tear volume was associated with a faster blink rate (r=0.46, p=0.001) and shorter interblink interval (r=-0.36, p=0.02). Older age was associated with improved tear volume (r=0.37, p=0.01) and stability (r=0.38, p=0.01). Conclusions Blinking characterised in situ was not impacted by age or habitual digital device use. A faster blink rate was associated with greater tear volume but not symptoms. Improved tear function was found with age suggesting that the ocular surface continues to develop through childhood

    Preliminary results and power analysis of the UAH SEDS G503 GAS can

    The G-503 Get Away Special (GAS) Canister contained four experiments. A stainless steel corrosion experiment, and experiment to mix and cure concrete, a plant root growth chamber, and a group of 8 chambers to characterize diatom growth cycles in microgravity. As would be expected for this selection of experiments a significant amount of power was required to carry out these investigations over several days in a GAS environment. This was accomplished through the use of low power experiment control circuitry, heaters, and an estimate 3.6 kWh battery pack. The battery was designed around 120 standard Duracell Alkaline F cells. This pack weighed 29.5 kg (65 lbs) including a DC/DC converter and the power distribution bus for all of the experiments. Although not rechargeable, this configurations was a fraction of the cost of rechargeable systems and did not require venting to the outside of the can. Combining this with the long term storage performance, 85% of initial capacity after four years at 20 C (70 F), this guarantees sufficient power even with unexpected launch delays. This paper describes the experiments, there operation and initial results. Also, the performance of the power system during the STS-68 SRL2 mission will be addressed

    Apple, condom, and cocaine - Body stuffing in prison: A case report

    © 2018 The Author(s). Background: Drug dealers and drug users resort to body stuffing to hastily conceal illicit drugs by ingesting their drug packets. This practice represents a medical challenge because rupture of the often insecure packaging can be toxic and even lethal. In an emergency setting, official guidelines are needed to help the medical team decide on the proper treatment. A preliminary observation period is generally accepted but its duration varies from hours to eventual packet expulsion. Case presentation: This case involves a 20-year-old white man in detention who claimed to have ingested one cocaine packet wrapped in plastic food-wrap and a condom in anticipation of an impending cell search. He reached out to medical professionals on day 4 after having unsuccessfully tried several methods to expel the drug packet, including swallowing olive oil, natural laxatives, liters of water, and 12 carved apple chunks. An initial computed tomography scan confirmed multiple packet-sized images throughout his stomach and bowel. After 24 hours of observation and normal bowel movements without expelling any packets, a subsequent scan found only one air-lined packet afloat in the gastric content. Due to the prolonged retention of the package there was an increased risk of rupture. The packet was eventually removed by laparoscopic gastrotomy. Conclusions: This case report illustrates that observation time needs to be adapted to each individual case of body stuffing. Proof of complete drug package evacuation ensures secure patient discharge. Body stuffers should be routinely asked for a detailed history, including how the drug is wrapped, and whether or not they ingested other substances to help expel the packets. The history enables the accurate interpretation of imaging. Repeated imaging can help follow the progress of packets if not all have been expelled during the observation period. Drug packets should be surgically removed in case of prolonged retention. To ensure the best possible outcomes, patients should have access to high-quality, private, and confidential medical care, which is equal to that offered to the general population. This is paramount to earning trust and collaboration from people in detention who resort to body stuffing
