In this work, the magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs) synthesized using a simple, fast, and environmentally acceptable green approach. Gundelia Tournefortii Extract, an aqueous plant extract, was used for the first time in green synthesis to prepare nanoparticles as reducing, capping, and stabilizing agents. Such biomolecules as flavonoids, alkaloids, and antioxidants are found in the aqueous leaf extract, and their presence has been determined to have an important role in the synthesis of Fe3O4-NPs. The techniques used in this analysis include Fourier Transform Infrared, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy, and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer. The Vibrating Sample Magnetometer demonstrated that the samples were superparamagnetic, with a magnetization value of 48.6 emu/g. The prepared nanoparticle was applied to  remove Chrystal Violet (CV), Malachite Green(MG), and Safranin (S) dyes from prepared aqueous solutions with the adsorption capacity of 13.9, 15.6, and 14.4 mg/g respectively

This study describes the association between levels of DNA damage and homocysteine (Hcy) in persistent diarrheic (PD) patients and correlates them with serum biochemical metabolites and mineral components. PD patients (n = 36) age 4 - 6 years from Faisalabad hospitals were examined for anthropometric factors, plasma biochemical and mineral constituents. Compared to 36 normal controls, children with PD had significantly higher concentrations of LDL (p = 0.0001), ALT (p = 0.01),homocysteine (p = 0.001), TOS (p = 0.0001), TBARS (p = 0.001), K (p = 0.0001) and Mg (p = 0.0001) while serum triglyceride, total proteins, albumin, globulin, T3, T4, TAS, Na, Ca, Zn and Cu were significantlylower than those of healthy individuals. Both DNA damage and Hcy were positively linked with LDLcholesterol, TBARS and K (all p values < 0.05). Both Hcy profile and percentage DNA damage in PD patients may impart role in the endothelium damage even in the normal range. PD patients have severe deficiency of macro- and micro-nutrients which may have resulted in enhancement of oxidative stress, DNA damage and Hcy levels in patients’ plasma. Appropriate supplementation of macro- and micronutrients may decrease the DNA damage, Hcy levels and enhance the levels of health markers and decrease the mortality rate of PD patients

HYEI: A New Hybrid Evolutionary Imperialist Competitive Algorithm for Fuzzy Knowledge Discovery

    Get PDF
In recent years, imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA), genetic algorithm (GA), and hybrid fuzzy classification systems have been successfully and effectively employed for classification tasks of data mining. Due to overcoming the gaps related to ineffectiveness of current algorithms for analysing high-dimension independent datasets, a new hybrid approach, named HYEI, is presented to discover generic rule-based systems in this paper. This proposed approach consists of three stages and combines an evolutionary-based fuzzy system with two ICA procedures to generate high-quality fuzzy-classification rules. Initially, the best feature subset is selected by using the embedded ICA feature selection, and then these features are used to generate basic fuzzy-classification rules. Finally, all rules are optimized by using an ICA algorithm to reduce their length or to eliminate some of them. The performance of HYEI has been evaluated by using several benchmark datasets from the UCI machine learning repository. The classification accuracy attained by the proposed algorithm has the highest classification accuracy in 6 out of the 7 dataset problems and is comparative to the classification accuracy of the 5 other test problems, as compared to the best results previously published

Sodium leak pathway and substrate binding order in the Na+-glucose cotransporter

    Get PDF
The Na+-glucose cotransporter (SGLT1) expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes was shown to generate a phlorizin-sensitive sodium leak in the absence of sugars. Using the current model for SGLT1, where the sodium leak was presumed to occur after two sodium ions are bound to the free carrier before glucose binding, a characteristic concentration constant (Kc) was introduced to describe the relative importance of the sodium leak versus Na+-glucose cotransport currents. Kc represents the glucose concentration at which the Na+-glucose cotransport current is equal to the sodium leak. As both the sodium leak and the Na+-glucose cotransport current are predicted to occur after the binding of two sodium ions, the model predicted that Kc should be sodium-independent. However, by using a two-microelectrode voltage-clamp technique, the observed Kc was shown to depend strongly on the external sodium concentration ([Na+]o): it was four times higher at 5 mM [Na+]o than at 20 mM [Na+]o. In addition, the magnitude of the sodium leak varied as a function of [Na+]o in a Michaelian fashion, and the sodium affinity constant for the sodium leak was 2–4 times lower than that for cotransport in the presence of low external glucose concentrations (50 or 100 microM), whereas the current model predicted a sigmoidal sodium dependence of the sodium leak and identical sodium affinities for the sodium leak and the Na+-glucose cotransport. These observations indicate that the sodium leak occurs after one sodium ion is associated with the carrier and agree with predictions from a model with the binding order sodium-glucose-sodium. This conclusion was also supported by experiments performed where protons replaced Na+ as a "driving cation.

Demographics and clinical presentations of 844 patients with light and dark skin types with polymorphous light eruption and chronic actinic dermatitis evaluated over 23 years

INTRODUCTION: Polymorphous light eruption (PMLE) and chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD) have been classically described in White individuals, although recent studies have reported higher prevalence in patients with dark skin types, particularly African Americans. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate for differences in demographic, and clinical features between persons with light and dark skin types who have PMLE and CAD. METHODS: Retrospective review of patients with PMLE and CAD who were diagnosed from January 1, 1998, through November 31, 2021, at a single academic dermatology center. RESULTS/DISCUSSION: A total of 844 patients (725 [85.9%] female; mean [SD] age of onset: 41.7 [16.9] years) were diagnosed with PMLE, and 60 patients (22 [36.6%] female; mean age, [SD]: 60.6 [10.6] years) of age at presentation, disease duration of 8.2 [7.3] years were diagnosed with CAD. Although just over 50% of the general clinic population was White, the prevalence of PMLE and CAD was significantly higher in dark-skinned individuals compared to light-skinned individuals (PMLE: 625 [74.0%] vs. 219 [25.9%], p value \u3c .001; CAD: 43 [71.6%] vs. 17 [28.3%], p value = .003) respectively. The pinpoint papular variant of PMLE (PP-PMLE) was predominantly seen in dark-skinned individuals. CONCLUSION: A substantial proportion of PMLE and CAD cases are present in dark-skinned individuals. PP-PMLE can be mistaken for lichen nitidus. As such, recognition of this entity is important for adequate evaluation and management of patients with PMLE

Entomological Origin of Honey Discriminated by NMR Chloroform Extracts in Ecuadorian Honey

    Get PDF
Honeys are produced by Apis mellifera and stingless bees (Meliponini) in Ecuador. We studied honey produced in beeswax combs by Apis mellifera, and honey produced in pots by Geotrigona and Scaptotrigona bees. Chloroform extracts of honey were obtained for fast NMR spectra. The 1D spectra were acquired at 298 K, with a 600 MHz NMR Bruker instrument, using a modified double pulsed field gradient spin echoes (DPFGSE) sequence. Signals of 1H NMR spectra were integrated and used as inputs for PCA, PLS-DA analysis, and labelled sets of classes were successfully identified, enhancing the separation between the three groups of honey according to the entomological origin: A. mellifera, Geotrigona and Scaptotrigona. This procedure is therefore recommended for authenticity test of honey in Ecuador
