In a review of a book Wielcy artyści ucieczek. Antologia tekstów o "Życiu i czasach Michaela K." w trzydziestą rocznicę publikacji, an author analyses the mere idea of an anthology of interpretations, describing its two possible understandings: as a collection of incomparable perspectives and as a field of conflict. The author emphasizes difficulties of interpretational procedures related to the novel by J.M. Coetzee and points to a political meanings of an act of reading. Additionally, texts collected in the anthology are classified by different attitudes towards the work of meanings in the novel, and some reductional practices are criticized. Finally, the author places the anthology in a wider horizon of interpretational strategies in contemporary humanities, asking questions regarding their importance - or lack of it

Dangers of salvation This review of Sprawiedliwość na końcu języka. Czytanie Waltera Benjamina by Adam Lipszyc locates the book in the framework of a wider phenomenon of interest in Walter Benjamin’s writings in contemporary Polish humanities. Author of the review indicates the basic assumption of homogeneity of the Benjamin’s writings, involving continuous elaboration of the “justice act” formula. The resulting preference for theological perspective, which becomes axiological frame for the analysis contained in the book, is questionable to reviewer. Despite these methodological concerns, the review underlines the impressive character of the analyzes conducted by Lipszyc, including not only a detailed reconstruction of Benjamin’s thought, but also the broader context of the philosophy of the twentieth century. The most important idea for literary studies turns out to be a dialectical relationship between philosophy and literature (criticism, history, translatology), which is being introduced by Lipszyc following Benjamin’s work

SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with multiple myeloma: survey in 23 centers across Europe and USA

Introduction: Despite several studies, the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 on patients with multiple myeloma remains uncertain. Material and methods: We performed a survey that covered the period of the first and second waves of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic in 23 centers inseven countries. Out of 352 patients with myeloma and SARS-CoV-2, 23% died. Results/Conclusions: Logistic regression showed a lower risk of death among patients treated with proteasome inhibitor and a higher risk of death for those who had a severe or a very severe course of disease

Inevitable plagiatorism : copyright in modern literary discourse

"Nieuchronny plagiat" to książka niezwykle potrzebna. Historyczność pozostaje w niej w służbie współczesności i przyszłości, a dzięki autorskiej rekonstrukcji debat o prawie autorskim rozumiemy lepiej problemy naszej kultury literackiej oraz dostajemy projekt innej historii nowoczesnego literaturoznawstwa. Maciej Jakubowiak wytycza nowe pole badawcze dla współpracy literaturoznawców i prawoznawców, wypełniając dotkliwą lukę w polskich badaniach odwiecznego sąsiedztwa prawa i literatury (prof. dr hab. Ryszard Koziołek). "Nieuchronny plagiat" to rozprawa pionierska, oferująca odkrywcze spojrzenie na literaturę nowoczesną. W ujęciu autora literatura ta była - i jest nadal - ściśle powiązana z prawem autorskim i kategorią własności. Powiązana na śmierć i życie: literaturę nowoczesną ożywia dążenie twórców do oryginalności, uśmierca - prawo, które stawia znak równości między autorskim tworem i rynkowym towarem. Oryginalność chroniona przez prawo staje się oryginalnością wycenianą przez rynek. Maciej Jakubowiak omawia genezę tego zjawiska, sięgając do oświeceniowych koncepcji plagiatu, a potem interpretuje modernistyczne polemiki dotyczące prawa autorskiego. A kiedy już wydaje się, że książka dobiega końca, autor podbija stawkę. Pyta mianowicie, czy można wyplątać literaturę z tego uścisku prawa i ekonomii. T.P. author’s company : metafictional characters in two novels by Teodor Parnicki

Artykuł dotyczy postaci literackich, które świadome są swojej fikcyjności i które określa się terminem "postać metafikcyjna". Termin ten łączy dwa znaczenia metafikcji: jedno związane z literaturą metafikcyjną (jak opisuje ją Patricia Waugh) a drugie odsyła do relacji między postacią a fikcją w perspektywie epistemologicznej, ontologicznej i antropologicznej. Główna część artykułu poświęcona jest analizie dwóch powieści Teodora Parnickiego: Muza dalekich podróży oraz Rozdwojony w sobie. Analizuje się w niej konstrukcję powieści, motyw powieści w powieści, koncepcję postaci literackiej i jej związki z postacią empiryczną i autorem. Interpretacja prowadzi autora do uznania konsekwencji takiej konstrukcji postaci metafikcyjnej dla nowej koncepcji podmiotu autorskiego i antropologicznej refleksji, która oznacza odkrycie fikcyjnego charakteru podmiotowości, tożsamości i rzeczywistości.The article undertakes the subject of literary characters who are aware of their own fictionality that are defined by the term "metafictional characte". The term combines two meanings of metafiction. One is related to metafictional literature (as described by Patricia Waugh) and the other one refers to the relation between a character and fiction in perspective of epistemology, ontology and anthropology. The main part of the paper is devoted to the analysis of two novels by Teodor Parnicki: Muza dalekich podróży and Rozdwojony w sobie. Novels’ construction, the motif of a novel within a novel, the concept of literary character and its relation to an empirical person and the author, are examined. The interpretation leads to the recognition of the consequences of construction of metafictional character for a revised concept of an authorial subject and the anthropological reflection, which means discovery of fictionality of subject, identity and reality

Cultural Studies on Copyright Law

The main objective of thus oriented research is to introduce an alternative perspective to studies traditionally carried out by copyright lawyers – a perspective allowing one to recognize the complexity of ways in which legal solutions may impact cultural practice. The article chronologically discusses the most important publications representing this subdiscipline, including text by such authors as Martha Woodmansee, Mark Rose, Paul K. Saint-Amour and Caren Irr. The critical presentation of the material focuses on ways of defining relations between copyright law and literature, on the impact of analyses carried out within this model upon our understanding of the cultural phenomena under discussion, and – last but not least – on research methods within the area.
