T.P. author’s company : metafictional characters in two novels by Teodor Parnicki

Abstract

Artykuł dotyczy postaci literackich, które świadome są swojej fikcyjności i które określa się terminem "postać metafikcyjna". Termin ten łączy dwa znaczenia metafikcji: jedno związane z literaturą metafikcyjną (jak opisuje ją Patricia Waugh) a drugie odsyła do relacji między postacią a fikcją w perspektywie epistemologicznej, ontologicznej i antropologicznej. Główna część artykułu poświęcona jest analizie dwóch powieści Teodora Parnickiego: Muza dalekich podróży oraz Rozdwojony w sobie. Analizuje się w niej konstrukcję powieści, motyw powieści w powieści, koncepcję postaci literackiej i jej związki z postacią empiryczną i autorem. Interpretacja prowadzi autora do uznania konsekwencji takiej konstrukcji postaci metafikcyjnej dla nowej koncepcji podmiotu autorskiego i antropologicznej refleksji, która oznacza odkrycie fikcyjnego charakteru podmiotowości, tożsamości i rzeczywistości.The article undertakes the subject of literary characters who are aware of their own fictionality that are defined by the term "metafictional characte". The term combines two meanings of metafiction. One is related to metafictional literature (as described by Patricia Waugh) and the other one refers to the relation between a character and fiction in perspective of epistemology, ontology and anthropology. The main part of the paper is devoted to the analysis of two novels by Teodor Parnicki: Muza dalekich podróży and Rozdwojony w sobie. Novels’ construction, the motif of a novel within a novel, the concept of literary character and its relation to an empirical person and the author, are examined. The interpretation leads to the recognition of the consequences of construction of metafictional character for a revised concept of an authorial subject and the anthropological reflection, which means discovery of fictionality of subject, identity and reality
