    Improving the effectiveness of nutritional information policies: assessment of unconscious pleasure mechanisms involved in food-choice decisions.

    International audienceThe rise in obesity in many countries has led to the emergence of nutritional information policies that aim to change people's diets. Changing an individual's diet is an ambitious goal, since numerous factors influence a person's food-choice decisions, many of which are made unconsciously. These frequently subconscious processes should not be underestimated in food-choice behavior, as they play a major role in food diet composition. In this review, research in cognitive experimental psychology and neuroscience provides the basis for a critical analysis of the role of pleasure in eating behaviors. An assessment of the main characteristics of nutritional policies is provided, followed by recent findings showing that food choices are guided primarily by automatic emotional processes. Neuroimaging and behavioral studies, which provide new insights into the relationships between emotions and food both in lean persons and in persons with eating disorders, are reported as well. Lastly, the argument is presented that future nutritional policies can be more effective if they associate healthy food with eating pleasure

    International audienceThe natural biotic capacity of soils to degrade gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (gamma-HCH, lindane) was estimated using an enrichment technique based on the ability of soil bacteria to develop on synthetic media and degrade the xenobiotic compound, used as the sole source of carbon and energy. Bacterial inocula from relatively highly contaminated soils (from wood treatment factories) were found to promote efficiently the degradation of gamma-HCH, which subsequently permitted isolation of a competent gamma-HCH-degrading microorganism. The decrease of gamma-HCH concurrently with the release of chloride ions and the production of CO2 demonstrated the complete mineralization of gamma-HCH mediated by the isolate. This was confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses showing that degradation subproducts of gamma-HCH included an unidentified tetrachlorinated compound and subsequently 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene and 2,5-dichlorophenol. The two linA- and linB-like genes coding, respectively, for a gamma-HCH dehydrochlorinase and a dehalogenase were characterized by using a PCR strategy based on sequence homologies with previously published sequences from Sphingomonas paucimobilis UT26. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the linA-like region revealed the presence of a 472-bp open reading frame exhibiting high homology with the linA gene from S. paucimobilis, while a preliminary study also indicated strong homology among the two linB genes. All enzymes involved in the gamma-HCH degradative pathway appear to be extracellular and encoded by genes located on the chromosome, although numerous cryptic plasmids have been detected

    Purpura fulminans in a child as a complication of chickenpox infection

    Purpura fulminans is a thrombotic disease that can occur during infections, disseminated intravascular coagulation or in the context of an acquired or congenital protein C or S deficiency. Here we report the case of a 4-year-old child who developed, 5 days after a chickenpox infection, large painful ecchymotic, necrotizing and retiform plaques on the lower extremities. Laboratory analyses revealed very low protein S levels as well as anticardiolipin antibodies. Aggressive treatment by low-molecular-weight heparin, steroids, intravenous immunoglobulins and fresh frozen plasma was able to prevent the extension of the lesions and to correct the coagulation abnormalities. No lesions required skin grafting. As in our patient, an acquired protein S deficiency is probably responsible for most cases of purpura fulminans occurring after varicella, but the concomitant presence of antiphospholipid antibodies may also play a role

    Culturel, interculturel, multiculturel… La mondialisation a popularisé mais aussi galvaudé ces concepts. Les attitudes et la démarche d’ouverture vis-à-vis d’une autre culture se bornent encore trop souvent à la connaissance de quelques stéréotypes. Le XXXe Congrès de l’APLIUT, qui s’est tenu à l’IUT Saint-Omer-Dunkerque en juin 2008, nous a donné l’occasion d’approfondir la notion de compétence interculturelle et de réfléchir aux moyens de la faire acquérir aux apprenants dans le cadre de l’enseignement des langues spécialisées. Les textes issus de certaines communications sont réunis dans les deux premiers numéros du volume XXVIII des Cahiers, celui de février et celui de juin 2009. Le thème du congrès, « Interculturel et enseignement des langues spécialisées », a été décliné par les intervenants selon deux axes majeurs : « Comprendre la compétence interculturelle » et « Former à la compétence interculturelle ». Dans ce numéro, nous regroupons des textes qui définissent la compétence interculturelle et approfondissent les relations entre langue et culture. Dans le deuxième numéro, nous rassemblons des articles, notes de pédagogie et comptes rendus d’atelier qui présentent diverses expériences de formation à la compétence interculturelle
