International audienceThis article provides an overview of the reception of Palestinian Arabic literature in French translation from the first publications in 1970 until the present day. It follows this history and offers insights at its main actors, whether translators or publishers, and thus describes it as a variation on the conditions that govern the reception of Arabic literature in translation in the French literary market: it follows its general patterns (e.g., an over-politicized reception that stresses the testimonial and the documentary dimensions over the literary ones), but also presents original characteristics (notably, the strong presence of Mahmud Darwich’s towering figure)

Engineering Redox Flow Battery Electrodes with Spatially Varying Porosity Using Non-Solvent-Induced Phase Separation

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are a promising electrochemical platform for efficiently and reliably delivering electricity to the grid. Within the RFB, porous carbonaceous electrodes facilitate electrochemical reactions and distribute the flowing electrolyte. Tailoring electrode microstructure and surface area can improve RFB performance, lowering costs. Electrodes with spatially varying porosity may increase electrode utilization and provide surface area in reaction-limited zones; however, the efficacy of such designs remains an open area of research. Herein, a non-solvent-induced phase-separation (NIPS) technique that enables the reproducible synthesis of macrovoid-free electrodes with well-defined across-thickness porosity gradients is described. The monotonically varying porosity profile is quantified and the physical properties and surface chemistries of porosity-gradient electrodes are compared with macrovoid-containing electrode, also synthesized by NIPS. Then, the electrochemical and fluid dynamic performance of the porosity-gradient electrodes is evaluated, exploring the effect of changing the direction of the porosity gradient and benchmarking against the macrovoid-containing electrode. Lastly, the performance is examined in a vanadium RFB, finding that the porosity-gradient electrode outperforms the macrovoid electrode, is independent of gradient direction, and performs favorably compared to advanced electrodes in the contemporary literature. It is anticipated that the approach motivates further exploration of microstructurally tailored electrodes in electrochemical systems.</p

Theory and practice in the French discourse of translation

International audienceTranslation theory has always been intimately connected to practice. For centuries, it was mostly elaborated by translators and was always prescriptive, that is, aiming at defining the conditions for "good" translating. Actually, while it would be tempting to take the emergence of "descriptive translation studies"-to mention Gideon Toury's (1995) most celebrated contribution to the field-as the birthmark of the study of translation as an autonomous discipline, one could argue that translation studies remain till now dependent on prescription in many ways, as remarks Lawrence Venuti (2000: 4). We find within the field of translation studies a much larger proportion of active translators than, say, the proportion of creative writers within the field of literary studies. All this points to the dependent, subaltern status of the translated text, and-without delving further into the philosophical and ethical implications of this question-provides me with a good starting point. I would like for this contribution to be a reflection on the link between theory and practice in translation, based on my own, three-decade long experience as a translator, a translation editor, and a scholar in translation studies. It has been a very particular experience, because it relies on translation to and from Arabic, and one that has often led me to elaborate a discourse on translation opposite to the mainstream one, whether in France (or, more generally, in the "global North") or in the Arab world. In order to explain this, I shall have to dwell on my personal trajectory in some detail, and I will do so not out of self-indulgence, but rather as a way of understanding, through a self socio-analysis of sorts, the objective conditions that made this trajectory possible. While doing so, I hope that I will provide the reader with some useful insights on the recent history of the French Orientalist academic field and French-Arab cultural relations as well

Satiric Literature and Other "Popular" Literary Genres in Egypt Today

International audienceThis article starts by describing some characteristics of current Egyptian popular literature, based on field observation at the Cairo 2016 book fair and a survey of the Egyptian authors available on the social network Goodreads, and puts the stress on the spectacular rejuvenation this market experienced in the last ten years. It focuses then on one of this market's main genres, namely, satiric literature, and suggests through the analysis of various authors' trajectories and works that it reveals a tension between reformism and subversion, a tension similar to the one that characterises the predicament of the Egyptian intelligentsia in the post-2011 context
