Dramatic Plays as a Tool to Educate Young African-American Females about HIV/AIDS
Rates of HIV/AIDS transmission have increased substantially, particularly among young African American women. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HIV/AIDS is the number one killer for African American women aged 25 to 34. Given that many of these young women are contracting the disease in their late teens and early twenties, there is a need to develop interventions that directly address the needs of this group. The current study sought to assess the effectiveness of theater in increasing knowledge of HIV/AIDS and the likelihood of healthier sexual behavior and choices among 219 young African American women 18 to 39 years of age. Paired sample t-tests revealed that there were significant mean differences in knowledge and intended safe sex behavior after viewing the play. Young women who viewed the play reported increased knowledge of HIV and reported a higher likelihood of engaging in safer sex. Given the high rates of HIV/AIDS among young African American women, more innovative educational and prevention techniques are needed
Student Perceptions of Research in an Occupational Therapy Doctoral Program: A Cross-Sectional Survey
Student perceptions of research in graduate programs play a role within the Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) curriculum and how future clinicians value Evidence Based Practice and research. The Student Perception of Research Integration Questionnaire (SPRIQ) was utilized to examine studentsâ perceptions of research in their graduate coursework. Participants included in this study were all students enrolled in an occupational therapy doctorate program. All items were scored on a 5-point Likert scale. Mean scores were calculated for each item on the respondentsâ submissions. The items were further categorized into subscales. The mean score of all items of the SPRIQ was 4.44 out of 5. Findings included the highest mean score value of 4.67 in the subcategory of reflection and lowest mean score of 4.25 in the subcategory of beliefs. Based on the results of the survey, it is suggested that OTD students believe research plays an integral role in their learning. Faculty mentors are critical players in studentsâ learning throughout the research process, which the majority felt was a crucial part in their overall learning experience
Exploring views on satisfaction with life in young children with chronic illness: an innovative approach to the collection of self-report data from children under 11
The objective of this study was to explore young childrenâs views on the impact of chronic illness on their life in order to inform future development of a patient-based self-report health outcome measure. We describe an approach to facilitating self-report views from young children with chronic illness. A board game was designed in order to obtain qualitative data from 39 children with a range of chronic illness conditions and 38 healthy controls ranging in age from 3 to 11 years. The format was effective in engaging young children in a self-report process of determining satisfaction with life and identified nine domains. The board game enabled children aged 5â11 years with chronic illness to describe the effects of living with illness on home, family, friends, school and life in general. It generated direct, non-interpreted material from children who, because of their age, may have been considered unable or limited their ability to discuss and describe how they feel. Obtaining this information for children aged 4 and under continues to be a challenge
Role of adiponectin and inflammation in insulin resistance of Mc3r and Mc4r knockout mice
Objective: To investigate the involvement of hypoadiponectinemia and inflammation in coupling obesity to insulin resistance in melanocortin-3 receptor and melanocortin-4 receptor knockout (KO) mice (Mc3/4rKO). Research Methods and Procedures: Sera and tissue were collected from 6-month-old Mc3rKO, Mc4rKO, and wild-type C57BL6J litter mates maintained on low-fat diet or exposed to high-fat diet (HFD) for 1 or 3 months. Inflammation was assessed by both real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis of macrophage-specific gene expression and immunohistochemistry. Results: Mc4rKO exhibited hypoadiponectinemia, exacerbated by HFD and obesity, previously reported in murine models of obesity. Mc4r deficiency was also associated with high levels of macrophage infiltration of adipose tissue, again exacerbated by HFD. In contrast, Mc3rKO exhibited normal serum adiponectin levels, irrespective of diet or obesity, and a delayed inflammatory response to HFD relative to Mc4rKO. Discussion: Our findings suggest that severe insulin resistance of Mc4rKO fed a HFD, as reported in other models of obesity such as leptin-deficient (Lep ob/Lepob) and KK-Ay mice, is linked to reduced serum adiponectin and high levels of inflammation in adipose tissue. Conversely, maintenance of normal serum adiponectin may be a factor in the relatively mild insulin-resistant phenotype of severely obese Mc3rKO. Mc3rKO are, thus, a unique mouse model where obesity is not associated with reduced serum adiponectin levels. A delay in macrophage infiltration of adipose tissue of Mc3rKO during exposure to HFD may also be a factor contributing to the mild insulin resistance in this model. Copyright © 2007 NAASO
High-excitation OH and H_2O lines in Markarian 231: the molecular signatures of compact far-infrared continuum sources
The ISO/LWS far-infrared spectrum of the ultraluminous galaxy Mkn 231 shows
OH and H_2O lines in absorption from energy levels up to 300 K above the ground
state, and emission in the [O I] 63 micron and [C II] 158 micron lines. Our
analysis shows that OH and H_2O are radiatively pumped by the far-infrared
continuum emission of the galaxy. The absorptions in the high-excitation lines
require high far-infrared radiation densities, allowing us to constrain the
properties of the underlying continuum source. The bulk of the far-infrared
continuum arises from a warm (T_dust=70-100 K), optically thick
(tau_100micron=1-2) medium of effective diameter 200-400 pc. In our best-fit
model of total luminosity L_IR, the observed OH and H2O high-lying lines arise
from a luminous (L/L_IR~0.56) region with radius ~100 pc. The high surface
brightness of this component suggests that its infrared emission is dominated
by the AGN. The derived column densities N(OH)>~10^{17} cm^{-2} and
N(H_2O)>~6x10^{16} cm^{-2} may indicate XDR chemistry, although significant
starburst chemistry cannot be ruled out. The lower-lying OH, [C II] 158 micron,
and [O I] 63 micron lines arise from a more extended (~350 pc) starburst
region. We show that the [C II] deficit in Mkn 231 is compatible with a high
average abundance of C+ because of an extreme overall luminosity to gas mass
ratio. Therefore, a [C II] deficit may indicate a significant contribution to

Help Supporters: Exploring the Design Space of Assistive Technologies to Support Face-to-Face Help Between Blind and Sighted Strangers
Blind and low-vision (BLV) people face many challenges when venturing into
public environments, often wishing it were easier to get help from people
nearby. Ironically, while many sighted individuals are willing to help, such
interactions are infrequent. Asking for help is socially awkward for BLV
people, and sighted people lack experience in helping BLV people. Through a
mixed-ability research-through-design process, we explore four diverse
approaches toward how assistive technology can serve as help supporters that
collaborate with both BLV and sighted parties throughout the help process.
These approaches span two phases: the connection phase (finding someone to
help) and the collaboration phase (facilitating help after finding someone).
Our findings from a 20-participant mixed-ability study reveal how help
supporters can best facilitate connection, which types of information they
should present during both phases, and more. We discuss design implications for

Validation of a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for analyzing cannabinoids in oral fluid.
A liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method was developed for quantifying ten cannabinoids in oral fluid (OF). This method utilizes OF collected by the Quantisalâą device and concurrently quantifies cannabinol (CBN), cannabidiol (CBD), Î9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), 11-hydroxy-Î9-THC (11-OH-THC), 11-nor-9-carboxy-Î9-THC (THC-COOH), 11-nor-9-carboxy-Î9-THC glucuronide (THC-COOH-gluc), Î9-THC glucuronide (THC-gluc), cannabigerol (CBG), tetrahydrocannabiverin (THCV), and Î9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid A (THCA-A). Solid phase extraction was optimized using Oasis Prime HLB 30âŻmg 96-well plates. Cannabinoids were separated by liquid chromatography over a BEH C18 column and detected by a Waters TQ-S micro tandem mass spectrometer. The lower limits of quantification (LLOQ) were 0.4âŻng/mL for CBN, CBD, THC, 11-OH-THC, THC-gluc, and THCV; and 1.0âŻng/mL for THC-COOH, THC-COOH-gluc, CBG and THCA-A. Linear ranges extended to 2000âŻng/mL for THC and 200âŻng/mL for all other analytes. Inter-day analytical bias and imprecision at three levels of quality control (QC) was within ±15%. Mean extraction efficiencies ranged from 26.0-98.8%. Applicability of this method was tested using samples collected from individuals randomly assigned to smoke either a joint containing <0.1%, 5.9%, or 13.4% THC content. This method was able to identify and calculate the concentration of 6 of 10 cannabinoids validated in this method
Prevention of childhood poisoning in the home: overview of systematic reviews and a systematic review of primary studies
Unintentional poisoning is a significant child public health problem. This systematic overview of reviews, supplemented with a systematic review of recently published primary studies synthesizes evidence on non-legislative interventions to reduce childhood poisonings in the home with particular reference to interventions that could be implemented by Children's Centres in England or community health or social care services in other high income countries. Thirteen systematic reviews, two meta-analyses and 47 primary studies were identified. The interventions most commonly comprised education, provision of cupboard/drawer locks, and poison control centre (PCC) number stickers. Meta-analyses and primary studies provided evidence that interventions improved poison prevention practices. Twenty eight per cent of studies reporting safe medicine storage (OR from meta-analysis 1.57, 95% CI 1.22â2.02), 23% reporting safe storage of other products (OR from meta-analysis 1.63, 95% CI 1.22â2.17) and 46% reporting availability of PCC numbers (OR from meta-analysis 3.67, 95% CI 1.84â7.33) demonstrated significant effects favouring the intervention group. There was a lack of evidence that interventions reduced poisoning rates. Parents should be provided with poison prevention education, cupboard/drawer locks and emergency contact numbers to use in the event of a poisoning. Further research is required to determine whether improving poison prevention practices reduces poisoning rates
ISO LWS Spectroscopy of M82: A Unified Evolutionary Model
We present the first complete far-infrared spectrum (43 to 197 um) of M82,
the brightest infrared galaxy in the sky, taken with the Long Wavelength
Spectrometer of the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). We detected seven fine
structure emission lines, [OI] 63 and 145 um, [OIII] 52 and 88 um, [NII] 122
um, [NIII] 57 um and [CII] 158 um, and fit their ratios to a combination
starburst and photo-dissociation region (PDR) model. The best fit is obtained
with HII regions with n = 250 cm^{-3} and an ionization parameter of 10^{-3.5}
and PDRs with n = 10^{3.3} cm^{-3} and a far-ultraviolet flux of G_o =
10^{2.8}. We applied both continuous and instantaneous starburst models, with
our best fit being a 3-5 Myr old instantaneous burst model with a 100 M_o
cut-off. We also detected the ground state rotational line of OH in absorption
at 119.4 um. No excited level OH transitions are apparent, indicating that the
OH is almost entirely in its ground state with a column density ~ 4x10^{14}
cm^{-2}. The spectral energy distribution over the LWS wavelength range is well
fit with a 48 K dust temperature and an optical depth, tau_{Dust} proportional
