    Generalized Lagrangian of N = 1 supergravity and its canonical constraints with the real Ashtekar variable

    We generalize the Lagrangian of N = 1 supergravity (SUGRA) by using an arbitrary parameter ξ\xi, which corresponds to the inverse of Barbero's parameter β\beta. This generalized Lagrangian involves the chiral one as a special case of the value ξ=±i\xi = \pm i. We show that the generalized Lagrangian gives the canonical formulation of N = 1 SUGRA with the real Ashtekar variable after the 3+1 decomposition of spacetime. This canonical formulation is also derived from those of the usual N = 1 SUGRA by performing Barbero's type canonical transformation with an arbitrary parameter β(=ξ1)\beta (=\xi^{-1}).     Observable Effects of Scalar Fields and Varying Constants

    We show by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions that a sufficient condition can be derived which determines when a local experiment will detect the cosmological variation of a scalar field which is driving the spacetime variation of a supposed constant of Nature. We extend our earlier analyses of this problem by including the possibility that the local region is undergoing collapse inside a virialised structure, like a galaxy or galaxy cluster. We show by direct calculation that the sufficient condition is met to high precision in our own local region and we can therefore legitimately use local observations to place constraints upon the variation of "constants" of Nature on cosmological scales.Comment: Invited Festscrift Articl

    As motivated in the full abstract, this paper further investigates Barbour, Foster and O Murchadha (BFO)'s 3-space formulation of GR. This is based on best-matched lapse-eliminated actions and gives rise to several theories including GR and a conformal gravity theory. We study the simplicity postulates assumed in BFO's work and how to weaken them, so as to permit the inclusion of the full set of matter fields known to occur in nature. We study the configuration spaces of gravity-matter systems upon which BFO's formulation leans. In further developments the lapse-eliminated actions used by BFO become impractical and require generalization. We circumvent many of these problems by the equivalent use of lapse-uneliminated actions, which furthermore permit us to interpret BFO's formulation within Kuchar's generally covariant hypersurface framework. This viewpoint provides alternative reasons to BFO's as to why the inclusion of bosonic fields in the 3-space approach gives rise to minimally-coupled scalar fields, electromagnetism and Yang--Mills theory. This viewpoint also permits us to quickly exhibit further GR-matter theories admitted by the 3-space formulation. In particular, we show that the spin-1/2 fermions of the theories of Dirac, Maxwell--Dirac and Yang--Mills--Dirac, all coupled to GR, are admitted by the generalized 3-space formulation we present. Thus all the known fundamental matter fields can be accommodated. This corresponds to being able to pick actions for all these theories which have less kinematics than suggested by the generally covariant hypersurface framework. For all these theories, Wheeler's thin sandwich conjecture may be posed, rendering them timeless in Barbour's sense.Comment: Revtex version; Journal-ref adde

    Logarithmic Corrections to Rotating Extremal Black Hole Entropy in Four and Five Dimensions

    We compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of rotating extremal black holes using quantum entropy function i.e. Euclidean quantum gravity approach. Our analysis includes five dimensional supersymmetric BMPV black holes in type IIB string theory on T^5 and K3 x S^1 as well as in the five dimensional CHL models, and also non-supersymmetric extremal Kerr black hole and slowly rotating extremal Kerr-Newmann black holes in four dimensions. For BMPV black holes our results are in perfect agreement with the microscopic results derived from string theory. In particular we reproduce correctly the dependence of the logarithmic corrections on the number of U(1) gauge fields in the theory, and on the angular momentum carried by the black hole in different scaling limits. We also explain the shortcomings of the Cardy limit in explaining the logarithmic corrections in the limit in which the (super)gravity description of these black holes becomes a valid approximation. For non-supersymmetric extremal black holes, e.g. for the extremal Kerr black hole in four dimensions, our result provides a stringent testing ground for any microscopic explanation of the black hole entropy, e.g. Kerr/CFT correspondence.Comment: LaTeX file, 50 pages; v2: added extensive discussion on the relation between boundary condition and choice of ensemble, modified analysis for slowly rotating black holes, all results remain unchanged, typos corrected; v3: minor additions and correction

    Toward a 21st-century health care system: Recommendations for health care reform

    The coverage, cost, and quality problems of the U.S. health care system are evident. Sustainable health care reform must go beyond financing expanded access to care to substantially changing the organization and delivery of care. The FRESH-Thinking Project (www.fresh-thinking.org) held a series of workshops during which physicians, health policy experts, health insurance executives, business leaders, hospital administrators, economists, and others who represent diverse perspectives came together. This group agreed that the following 8 recommendations are fundamental to successful reform: 1. Replace the current fee-for-service payment system with a payment system that encourages and rewards innovation in the efficient delivery of quality care. The new payment system should invest in the development of outcome measures to guide payment. 2. Establish a securely funded, independent agency to sponsor and evaluate research on the comparative effectiveness of drugs, devices, and other medical interventions. 3. Simplify and rationalize federal and state laws and regulations to facilitate organizational innovation, support care coordination, and streamline financial and administrative functions. 4. Develop a health information technology infrastructure with national standards of interoperability to promote data exchange. 5. Create a national health database with the participation of all payers, delivery systems, and others who own health care data. Agree on methods to make de-identified information from this database on clinical interventions, patient outcomes, and costs available to researchers. 6. Identify revenue sources, including a cap on the tax exclusion of employer-based health insurance, to subsidize health care coverage with the goal of insuring all Americans. 7. Create state or regional insurance exchanges to pool risk, so that Americans without access to employer-based or other group insurance could obtain a standard benefits package through these exchanges. Employers should also be allowed to participate in these exchanges for their employees' coverage. 8. Create a health coverage board with broad stakeholder representation to determine and periodically update the affordable standard benefit package available through state or regional insurance exchanges

    The present work was carried out in order to study: a - the effect of omission and presence of the macronutrients and boron on the growth of the plants; b - deficiency symptoms of macronutrients, as well of boron; c - the effect of the deficiency of each nutrient on the chemical composition of the plants. Young spinach plants were grown in pots containing pure quartz sand. Several times a day the plants were irrigated by percolation with nutrient solutions. The treatments were: complete solution and deficient solution, in which each one of the macronutrients was omitted as well boron. Soon as the malnutrition symptoms appered, the plants were harvested and analysed chemically. - symptoms of malnutrition are easily observed for N, K, Ca and B. - symptoms of malnutrition for P, S and Mg are not easily identified. - the nutrient content, in dry matter, in deficient leaves and healthy leaves is:O trabalho teve como objetivo estudar alguns aspectos da nutrição mineral do espinafre (Tetragonia expansa Murr.) no que concerne: 1 - Efeitos da omissão dos macronutrientes e do boro, na obtenção de um quadro sintomatológico; 2 - Efeitos das carências na produção de matéria seca e composição química da planta. Mudas com trinta dias de idade foram transplantadas para soluções nutritivas carentes nos macronutrientes e/ou em boro.
