    Sports heroes and mass sports participation: The (double) paradox of the 'German tennis boom'

    The major sporting success of one's countrymen and women is often supposed to promote the growth of general participation in that sport. This study is the first to analyse the impact of sports heroes on the membership figures of the corresponding sports association by means of an econometric analysis. We do so by evaluating the so-called 'Boris Becker effect' by simultaneously testing for the effects of the rise and retirement of the three stars Boris Becker, Stefanie Graf, and Michael Stich. As a first paradox, our results indicate a negative tennis growth effect associated with the time period of the ascendency of the sport stars. With the first paradox, their retirement should then have a positive effect. In this sense, our second result of a statistically negative tennis growth since the declining success of the German tennis stars must be regarded as a second paradox

    Synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopic study of ferropericlase at high pressures and temperatures

    The electronic spin state of Fe^(2+) in ferropericlase, (Mg_(0.75)Fe_(0.25))O, transitions from a high-spin (spin unpaired) to low-spin (spin paired) state within the Earth’s mid-lower mantle region. To better understand the local electronic environment of high-spin Fe^(2+) ions in ferropericlase near the transition, we obtained synchrotron Mössbauer spectra (SMS) of (Mg_(0.75),Fe_(0.25))O in externally heated and laser-heated diamond anvil cells at relevant high pressures and temperatures. Results show that the quadrupole splitting (QS) of the dominant high-spin Fe^(2+) site decreases with increasing temperature at static high pressure. The QS values at constant pressure are fitted to a temperature-dependent Boltzmann distribution model, which permits estimation of the crystal-field splitting energy (Δ_3) between the d_(xy_ and d_(xz) or d_(zy) orbitals of the t_(2g) states in a distorted octahedral Fe^(2+) site. The derived Δ_3 increases from approximately 36 meV at 1 GPa to 95 meV at 40 GPa, revealing that both high pressure and high temperature have significant effects on the 3d electronic shells of Fe^(2+) in ferropericlase. The SMS spectra collected from the laser-heated diamond cells within the time window of 146 ns also indicate that QS significantly decreases at very high temperatures. A larger splitting of the energy levels at high temperatures and pressures should broaden the spin crossover in ferropericlase because the degeneracy of energy levels is partially lifted. Our results provide information on the hyperfine parameters and crystal-field splitting energy of high-spin Fe^(2+) in ferropericlase at high pressures and temperatures, relevant to the electronic structure of iron in oxides in the deep lower mantle

    Osteopathology induced by bisphosphonates and dental implants: clinical observations

    Objectives: Although there are many reports about risk factors for the development of BP-associated osteonecrosis of the jaws, the role of dental implants as a local risk factor is still discussed, especially in patients with oral BP treatment. Until now, a few case reports and surveys display a possible minor risk in patients with oral BP therapy, whereas the avoidance of implant placement is generally accepted in patients with intravenous BP therapy. Patient and methods: In this study, the cases of 14 patients with osteonecrosis of the jaws in association with BP therapy and dental implant placement were analyzed carefully with a detailed literature review. Results: Of 14 patients, nine had underlying malignant disease and five patients had osteoporosis. In ten patients, implants were placed either in the posterior mandible or maxilla; the mean interval between implant insertion and disease onset was 20.9 months. Pain (n12) and signs of infection (n10) were the most common symptoms. Histologically, signs of infection were found in nine of 11 analyzed patients with presence of Actinomyces in six patients. Two patients turned out to have infiltration of underlying malignant disease. Conclusions: Posteriorly placed implants seem to be of higher risk of development of osteonecrosis of the jaws. Not only the implant placement but also the inserted implant itself seems to be a continuous risk factor.     The MINDMAP project: mental well-being in urban environments

    __Background:__ The MINDMAP consortium (2016–2019) aims to identify opportunities provided by the urban environment for the promotion of mental well-being and functioning of older people in Europe by bringing together European cities with urban longitudinal ageing studies: GLOBE, HAPIEE, HUNT, LASA, LUCAS, RECORD, Rotterdam Study, Turin Study. A survey on mental healthcare planning policies and programmes dedicated to older persons covering the range from health promotion to need of nursing care was performed for profound data interpretation in Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Hamburg, Helsinki, Kaunas, Krakow, London, Nord-Trþndelag, Paris, Prague, Rotterdam and Turin. __Objectives:__ To collect detailed information on healthcare planning policies and programmes across these European cities to evaluate variations and to delineate recommendations for sciences, policies and planners using experience from evidence-based practice feedback from the MINDMAP cities. __Materials and methods:__ The MINDMAP partners identified experts in the 12 cities with the best background knowledge of the mental health sector. After pretesting, semi-structured telephone interviews (1–2 h) were performed always by the same person. A structured evaluation matrix based on the geriatric functioning continuum and the World Health Organization (WHO) Public Health Framework for Healthy Ageing was applied. __Results:__ A complete survey (12 out of 12) was performed reporting on 41 policies and 280 programmes on the city level. It appeared from extensive analyses that the focus on older citizens, specific target groups, and multidimensional programmes could be intensified. __Conclusion:__ There is a broad variety to cope with the challenges of ageing in health, and to address both physical and mental capacities in older individuals and their dynamic interactions in urban environments

    Bone mineral density measurements performed by cone-beam computed tomography in the bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis-affected jaw

    Objectives: The aims of this study were to determine the bone mineral density (BMD) in bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) measurements and to correlate these measurements with the current stages recommended by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS). Methods: Bone mineral density measurements of various areas in 24 bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis (BRON) jaws were evaluated by CBCT. Another 24 age- and sex-matched patients without any bone pathologies served as the control group. Data acquisition was highly standardized to ensure maximum reliability in the comparisons of BMD measurements by CBCT. Results: Compared with the control group, the bisphosphonate patients had significantly higher (p≀0.01) BMDs in the non-affected jaw areas ipsilateral and contralateral to the BRON within the maxilla and mandible. The highest BMDs within the BRON jaws were observed in the BRON-adjacent areas relative to the non-affected ipsilateral and contralateral areas. Regarding the correlation with the AAOMS stages, the BMDs of the evaluated areas of BRONJ showed no significant differences (p≄0.05) between the stages. Conclusions: Bisphosphonate-related bone pathologies can be detected by CBCT and are associated with increased BMDs, not only in clinically obvious BRONJ areas, but also in clinically unapparent areas, suggesting a subclinical general osteosclerosis of the jaw. The data transferability to other CBCT devices needs to be further elucidated and compared with multislice C

    Charles Bonnet syndrome in cranio-maxillofacial surgery: case report

    Background: Complex visual hallucinations in the presence of a clear mental state and in the absence of underlying neurological disorders have received increased recognition since Charles Bonnet reported visual hallucinations secondary to mature cataracts in 1760. The prevalence of Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) varies widely in the literature and might be underestimated in most settings. The current paper presents a case of acute-onset CBS due to a unilateral Frost suture after revision of an orbit floor fracture. Case report: A 68-year-old male patient underwent an operation to repair a unilateral orbital floor fracture and subsequent eye patching by a Frost suture. The patient complained of complex, colored visual hallucinations ∌3h after waking from general anesthesia. The visual hallucinations stopped during sleep and reappeared in the morning. The symptoms disappeared completely ∌2h after removal of the Frost suture. Discussion: Frost sutures are commonly used in oculoplastic surgery and may result in acute onset of visual hallucinations. CBS is often neglected, and clinicians must be aware of the association between acute visual deprivation and CBS

    ‘Finding Old Sikyon’, 2015: A preliminary report

    The project “Ancient Sikyon” is a cooperation between the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corinth, the National Museum of Denmark, the Danish Institute at Athens and the Institute of Geoscience of the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel. Conceived as a five-year project, its main aim is to identify the exact location, the major features and the urbanistic development of the city, prior to its relocation in 303 BC to a plateau nearby. This, however, is intended to serve the greater purpose of answering general questions of Archaic and Classical urbanism and the structure and organization of a famous centre of art and culture in comparison with other such centres like Corinth and Athens. The first year of research has already brought important information about the topography and material culture of Ancient Sikyon, which is presented in this preliminary report

    Cone beam computed tomography for diagnosis of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: evaluation of quantitative and qualitative image parameters

    Objective: To assess the diagnostic performance of quantitative and qualitative image parameters in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for diagnosis of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). Materials and methods: A BRONJ (22 patients, mean age 70.0years) group was age and gender matched to a healthy control group (22 patients, mean age 68.0years). On CBCT images two independent readers performed quantitative bone density value (BDV) measurements with region and volume-of-interest (ROI and VOI) based approaches and qualitative scoring of BRONJ-associated necrosis, sclerosis and periosteal thickening (1 = not present to 5 = definitely present). Intraoperative and clinical findings served as standard of reference. Interreader agreements and diagnostic performance were assessed by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), kappa-statistics and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: Twenty-three regions in 22 patients were affected by BRONJ. ICC values for mean BDV VOI and mean BDV ROI were 0.864 and 0.968, respectively (p < 0.001). The area under the curve (AUC) for mean BDV VOI and mean BDV ROI was 0.58/0.83 with a sensitivity of 57/83% and specificity of 61/77% for diagnosis of BRONJ, respectively. Kappa values for presence of necrosis, sclerosis and periosteal thickening were 0.575, 0.617 and 0.885, respectively. AUC values for qualitative parameters ranged between 0.90-0.96 with sensitivity of 96% and specificities between 79-96% at respective cutoff scores. Conclusions: BRONJ can be effectively diagnosed with CBCT. Qualitative image parameters yield a higher diagnostic performance than quantitative parameters, and ROI-based attenuation measurements were more accurate than VOI-based measurements
