In this article, the author presents Bernhard Kahn (1876–1955) born in Oskarshamn, Sweden. During his career he grew an extensive international network, which made him one of the most known Swedish Jews abroad of the 20th century. Towards the end of 1904, Kahn was employed as secretary-general of Hilfsverein der Deutschen Juden which had been founded in 1901 and commenced its full activity in 1903, after the progrom in Kishinev. As secretary general of HV, Kahn worked hard to give constructive assistance to the Jews in Eastern Europe, among other things. Later he worked in Berlin as European director of the Joint. Kahn perceived that his position as JDC’s European director was untenable as long as he remained in Berlin. His connections with the hated American Jewish community were unpopular in Berlin. In the end of March 1933 he prepared his departure and moved his office to Paris. In 1938, during Kahn’s last active year in Europe before he moved to the United States, there were 687 loan societies with 191,000 members, small businessmen, farmers and craftsmen. JDC’s Reconstruction Foundation, with Kahn as its executive director, was not only active among the Jews in Poland, but also in Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Czechoslovakia and Turkey.

Summary : Periodontal diseases are oral pathologies of inflammatory origin, resulting in the destruction of tooth supportive tissues. The primary pathogenic factor is the existence of a bacterial biofilm on dental and gingival surfaces. The best treatment consists in the elimination of bacterial flora by non-surgical treatment (root planing). However, it has been shown that adjuvant treatments could be considered as part of therapeutic arsenal to optimize the results of non-surgical treatments but also to reduce the indication od surgical treatments. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is based on an attractive concept : the combined use of a photosensitizer and light (low energy laser or LED). This therapy seems promising because of its antibacterial effects, its anti-inflammatory effects and its effect on healing. It will dely the recolonization of the pockets and reduce the probing depths and loss attachment, in a low risk of side effects

In a paper published in 1740, Carolus Linnaeus described the strange periodic migrations of the lemmings. This paper was summarized by the Swedish-Jewish poet and critic Oscar Levertin in his unfinished study of Linnaeus. Levertin also took Linnaeus’ description as the basis for his famous metaphor, in which he compared the migration of peoples with the migration of lemmings. It is possible that Levertin was also inspired by Max Nordau’s speech at the Fourth World Zionist Congress, in which Nordau employed a similar metaphor to describe the tragedy of Romanian Jewry. Nordau, in turn, may have seen Linnaeus’ paper, which was available in both German and English translation. Levertin was very concerned with the history and fate of his people. There are in his writings several parallels to Nordau’s imagery. Of particular significance is his short story Kalonymos (1899) in which the motif of Jewish migration is of fundamental importance
