Preliminary Recommendations for Shareable Metadata Best Practices

A primary goal of the IMLS Digital Collections and Content project has been to encourage sharing of metadata and participation in aggregating projects. Benefits realized through these activities include increased visibility of the collection, an environment of complimentary resources, and enhanced discoverability of individual resources. In order for these benefits to be achieved, metadata from each repository must be interoperable with existing metadata in the aggregation. Mishpat Ivri, Halakhah and Legal Philosophy: Agunah and the Theory of “Legal Sources"

In this paper, I ask whether mishpat ivri (Jewish Law) is appropriately conceived as a “legal system”. I review Menachem Elon’s use of a “Sources” Theory of Law (based on Salmond) in his account of Mishpat Ivri; the status of religious law from the viewpoint of jurisprudence itself (Bentham, Austin and Kelsen); then the use of sources (and the approach to “dogmatic error”) by halakhic authorities in discussing the problems of the agunah (“chained wife”), which I suggest points to a theory more radical than the “sources” theory of law, one more akin to the ultimate phase of the thought of Kelsen (the “non-logical” Kelsen) or indeed to some form of Legal Realism (with which that phase of Kelsen’s thought has indeed been compared)? Functional genre in Illinois State Government digital documents

Provisions for collecting or archiving digital documents can be informed by knowledge of the genres of documents likely to be encountered. Although different aspects of collecting and curation may classify documents into genres based on differing criteria (e.g., size, file format, subject), this document addresses classification based on the functional role the document plays in state government, akin to (Toms, 2001), but here specifically Illinois State Government (ISG). The classifications listed herein are based on an overview of ISG digital documents, encountered in over nine years of gathering and archiving work with and for the Illinois State Library (ISL), and on discussions with practitioners in cataloging and in government documents librarianship. This report states definitions, and including examples of each such genre. State government documents are interesting in this regard in that they are presumably somewhat comparable to both federal government documents and business documents. Perhaps surprisingly, there are also portions of the State Web that are somewhat less than businesslike, either in tone or in technological proficiency of implementation. In this respect state government digital documents may also be useful approximations to documents produced either personally or by small activities. Having a list of government document genres can inform work in information promulgation (e.g., through website design, or the design of a series of printed materials), and the grouping of documents for digital library or archival purposes.Library of Congress / NDIIPP-2 A6075unpublishednot peer reviewe

Natural Dirac Neutrinos from Warped Extra Dimension

Dirac neutrinos arising from gauged discrete symmetry \`a la Krauss-Wilczek are implemented in the minimal custodial Randall-Sundrum model. In the case of a normal hierarchy, all lepton masses and mixing pattern can be naturally reproduced at the TeV scale set by the electroweak constraints, while simultanously satisfy bounds from lepton flavour violation. A nonzero neutrino mixing angle, $\theta_{13}$, is generic in the scenario, as well as the existence of sub-TeV right-handed Kaluza-Klein neutrinos, which may be searched for at the LHC.Comment: Talk given at the 2nd Young Researchers Workshop "Physics Challenges in the LHC Era", Frascati, May 10 and 13, 2010, 6 page

This paper explores, both wit This study reflects a recent shift towards the study of early stages of expert memory acquisition for chess positions. Over the course of fifteen sessions, two subjects who knew virtually nothing about the game of chess were trained to memorise positions. Increase in recall performance and chunk size was captured by power functions, confirming predictions made by the template theory (Gobet & Simon, 1996, 1998, 2000). The human data was compared to that of a computer simulation run on CHREST (Chunk Hierarchy and REtrieval STructures), an implementation of the template theory. The model accounts for the pattern of results in the human data, although it underestimates the size of the largest chunks and the rate of learning. Closing the Gap: A Research Agenda for the Study of Health Needs among American Indian/Native Hawaiian Transgender Individuals

Objectives: To explore health research needs of American Indian and Native Hawaiian (AIINH) transgender individuals. Methods: This qualitative study is composed of four focus groups and one informal meeting, totaling 42 AIINH transgender individuals in four major cities. The theoretical and methodological approaches combined grounded theory with the principles of community based participatory research. Results: Healthcare and resiliency are two main themes that emerged as research needs with important subcategories within them. Access to quality care from medical professionals and access to care that is unique to their trans gender status were subcategories within healthcare. Lived experiences, culture, and history were factors found to contribute to their resiliency. Conclusions: There are a number of factors that lead to health disparities among AIINH people. They include the lack of quality care due to the negative encounters with health providers, health care providers\u27 limited knowledge of trans gender issues, and lack of transgender specific services. This must be researched further along with health provider care, attitudes, beliefs, and education. Understanding the lived lives of AIINH trans gender individuals and utilizing their culture and history in health interventions may improve their health and overall wellbeing
