Embodied Difference: Divergent Bodies In Public Discourse
Focusing on the body as a visual and discursive platform across public space, we study marginalization as a sociocultural practice and hegemonic schema. Whereas mass incarceration and law enforcement readily feature in discussions of institutionalized racism, we differently highlight understudied sites of normalization and exclusion. Our combined effort centers upon physical contexts (skeletons, pageant stages, gentrifying neighborhoods), discursive spaces (medical textbooks, legal battles, dance pedagogy, vampire narratives) and philosophical arenas (morality, genocide, physician-assisted suicide, cryonic preservation, transfeminism) to deconstruct seemingly intrinsic connections between body and behavior, Whiteness and normativity
Validity of effective material parameters for optical fishnet metamaterials
Although optical metamaterials that show artificial magnetism are mesoscopic
systems, they are frequently described in terms of effective material
parameters. But due to intrinsic nonlocal (or spatially dispersive) effects it
may be anticipated that this approach is usually only a crude approximation and
is physically meaningless. In order to study the limitations regarding the
assignment of effective material parameters, we present a technique to retrieve
the frequency-dependent elements of the effective permittivity and permeability
tensors for arbitrary angles of incidence and apply the method exemplarily to
the fishnet metamaterial. It turns out that for the fishnet metamaterial,
genuine effective material parameters can only be introduced if quite stringent
constraints are imposed on the wavelength/unit cell size ratio. Unfortunately
they are only met far away from the resonances that induce a magnetic response
required for many envisioned applications of such a fishnet metamaterial. Our
work clearly indicates that the mesoscopic nature and the related spatial
dispersion of contemporary optical metamaterials that show artificial magnetism
prohibits the meaningful introduction of conventional effective material
parameters
Transaction Consistency and the New Finance in Bankruptcy
Prior to the enactment of the Dodd-Frank Act last summer, derivatives and repurchase agreements (“repos”) were largely unregulated outside of bankruptcy, and also were exempted from core bankruptcy provisions such as the automatic stay, which prevents creditors from seizing collateral or attempting to collect what they are owed. The Dodd-Frank Act now extensively regulates derivatives outside of bankruptcy, but it left their special treatment in bankruptcy completely untouched.
There is a gap in the debate over this special treatment. To date, neither scholars nor the derivatives industry have fully analyzed the key counterfactual: what would happen if derivatives and repos were subject to the same treatment as other contracts? This Article tries to fill the gap, and to develop a more general theory about the importance of “transaction consistency” in the bankruptcy laws. Our findings are surprising. Contrary to the dire warnings of the repo industry, the effect of transaction consistency on repos would be limited, because repos would automatically be terminated as of the bankruptcy filing and thus could not be reinstated by the debtor. Derivatives have more at stake, but the nondebtor’s right of setoff would reduce many of the adverse effects.
We do not argue that the special treatment should simply be removed, however. Given the distinctive attributes of these contracts, we argue that repo lenders should be able to immediately sell some kinds of collateral and that the automatic stay should be limited to three days for derivatives. We also explain how transaction consistency can be integrated with the Dodd-Frank Act. We believe that that the reforms we propose would strongly enhance bankruptcy’s efficacy, and make Dodd-Frank resolution unnecessary in all but the most extraordinary cases
Singular electrostatic energy of nanoparticle clusters
The binding of clusters of metal nanoparticles is partly electrostatic. We
address difficulties in calculating the electrostatic energy when high charging
energies limit the total charge to a single quantum, entailing unequal
potentials on the particles. We show that the energy at small separation
has a strong logarithmic dependence on . We give a general law for the
strength of this logarithmic correction in terms of a) the energy at contact
ignoring the charge quantization effects and b) an adjacency matrix specifying
which spheres of the cluster are in contact and which is charged. We verify the
theory by comparing the predicted energies for a tetrahedral cluster with an

Politics and Popular Culture: How Some Young Anglophone Canadians Perceive thePolitical Content of the Entertainment Media
This research, based on surveys of 456 young Canadians enrolled at universitieswhere English is the primary language of instruction, seeks answers to several basicquestions at the foundation of the inquiry into the impact of popular culture onyoung English-speaking Canadians' political beliefs. It investigates whether youngCanadians actually perceive any political messages in popular culture, and whetherthey think about these themes in a rigorous way. We investigate whether conservativeor liberal youths are more likely to agree or disagree with the politics of popularculture, and to what extent young Canadians' attitudes toward the socio-politicalcontent of the entertainment media are different from US youths' attitudes. Variability in supply and cross-shelf transport of pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus duorarum) postlarvae into western Florida Bay
The variability in the supply of pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus duorarum) postlarvae and the transport mechanisms of planktonic stages were investigated with field data and simulations of transport. Postlarvae entering the nursery grounds of Florida Bay were collected for three consecutive years at channels that connect the Bay with the Gulf of Mexico, and in channels of the Middle Florida Keys that connect the southeastern margin of the Bay with the Atlantic Ocean. The influx of postlarvae in the Middle Florida Keys was low in magnitude and varied seasonally and among years. In contrast, the greater postlarval influx occurred at the northwestern border of the Bay, where there was a strong seasonal pattern with peaks in influx from July through September each year. Planktonic stages need to travel up to 150 km eastward between spawning grounds (northeast of Dry Tortugas) and nursery grounds (western Florida Bay) in about 30 days, the estimated time of planktonic development for this species. A Lagrangian trajectory model was developed to estimate the drift of planktonic stages across the SW Florida shelf. The model simulated the maximal distance traveled by planktonic stages under various assumptions of behavior. Simulation
results indicated that larvae traveling with the instantaneous current and exhibiting a diel behavior travel up to 65 km and 75% of the larvae travel only 30 km. However, the eastward distance traveled increased substantially when a larval response to tides was added to the behavioral variable (distance increased to 200 km and 85% of larvae traveled 150 km). The question is, when during larval development, and where on the shallow SW Florida shelf, does the tidal response become incorporated into the behavior of pink shrimp
Corn Disease Update
The growing conditions during 2013 contributed to several disease problems in corn. Cold and wet conditions early led to development of seedling diseases. The hail-damaged corn in many areas of the state during the season led to ear rot diseases that were exacerbated by cooler conditions and increased grain moisture.
