    Implementation of a Diabetes Self-management Education Program in the Rural Health Care Setting to Improve Glycemic Control in the African American Adult Population

    Background: According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a significant epidemic health problem worldwide. Furthermore, with the generality of T2DM-associated complications increasing, individuals living with chronic diseases must be competent in self-management to prevent long-term complications (CDC, 2021). Therefore, this Project Investigator aims to decrease the reported home glycemic control and improve diabetes self-management education among African American individuals in rural healthcare using the DSMEP tool. Purpose: The purpose of the DNP project was to implement and assess the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program (DSMEP) effect on African American individuals in the rural health care setting living with T2DM. The goals were to improve knowledge and blood glucose control to decrease long-term complications with T2DM. Methods: Using the Iowa Model, this quality improvement project was implemented in rural healthcare to provide DSMEP for African American individuals with T2DM. The project investigator conducted four weeks of follow-ups via phone calls to collect data and answer questions focusing on diabetes self-management, diet, and exercise. Results: Ten African American individuals with T2DM, ages ranging from 37-75 years old, participated in the implementation of improving glycemic control in a rural health care setting. Participants\u27 average blood glucose level decreased by 12.6% after the diabetes self-management education program. Conclusion: The data gathered indicated that patient-centered DSMEP is a practical implementation via tele-health coaching for increasing knowledge and self-management for T2DM among African American individuals in a rural health care setting

    The Predictability of Demographic Academic Factors on the Career Decision Making and Self-efficacy of African American Freshmen College

    The purpose of this study was to examine the predictability of selected demographic and academic variables on the career decision making process and self-efficacy of African American freshman college students. Specifically, this study was concerned with the relationship between the demographic and academic variables of gender, age, social economic status, grade point average, academic adjustment and vocational identity, and the career decision-making and self-efficacy scores of African American college students. A correlational research design was used in the study. One hundred forty-nine (149) African American freshman college students were selected to participate in the study. The Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale and the Jackson’s Demographic and Academic Profile Sheet were used to collect the data. A linear relationship did not exist between the demographic factors of gender, age, socioeconomic status, and the total career decision-making self-efficacy scores among African American freshman college students. A statistically significant relationship did not exist between the demographic factors of gender, age, socio economic status and the career self-efficacy scores among American freshman college students. A significant linear relationship was found to exist between the academic factors of grade point average, academic adjustment, vocational identity, and the total career decision-making self-efficacy scores among African American freshman college students. The variable vocational identity was found to be independently related to the total career decision-making self-efficacy scores of African American freshman college students. A significant relationship did exist between the academic factors of grade point average, academic adjustment, vocational identity, and the career self-efficacy scores of African American freshman college students. Finally, the academic variable of vocational identity was found to contribute significantly to the career self-efficacy scores among African American freshman college students

    The role of language to design effective techniques for students´ emotional development

    This Final Degree Project examines the strategies, techniques, methodologies and resources that facilitate pupils' emotional regulation, which is of educational and curricular importance. This study is based on direct qualitative field research, which includes a personal anecdote collected during the practicum in a school in Northern Ireland, as well as a questionnaire conducted with approximately 60 participants. The principal objective of this project is to propose effective techniques for the adequate support of students' emotional regulation. This work acknowledges the necessity for advancement and growth in the field of emotional intelligence within the education sector. The results demonstrate that the appropriate utilisation of emotional regulation techniques has a considerable, positive impact on students' interpersonal and intrapersonal development. The findings suggest the necessity of further addressing the issue of emotional self-regulation and management among students, with particular focus on those who, for various reasons, may require it most. This could potentially lead to improvements in the mental health and wellbeing of young people and professionals in the present era.Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado examina las estrategias, técnicas, metodologías y recursos que facilitan la regulación emocional de los alumnos, de importancia educativa y curricular. Este estudio se basa en una investigación de campo cualitativa directa, que incluye una anécdota personal recogida durante el prácticum en un colegio de Irlanda del Norte, así como un cuestionario realizado a aproximadamente 60 participantes. El objetivo principal de este proyecto es proponer técnicas eficaces para el apoyo adecuado de la regulación emocional de los alumnos. Este trabajo reconoce la necesidad de avanzar y crecer en el campo de la inteligencia emocional dentro del sector educativo. Los resultados demuestran que la utilización adecuada de técnicas de regulación emocional tiene un impacto considerable y positivo en el desarrollo interpersonal e intrapersonal de los estudiantes. Los resultados sugieren la necesidad de seguir abordando la cuestión de la autorregulación y la gestión emocional entre los estudiantes, con especial atención a aquellos que, por diversas razones, más lo necesitan. Esto podría conducir potencialmente a mejoras en la salud mental y el bienestar de los jóvenes y los profesionales de la época actual.Grado en Educación Primari

    MMP-9 cleaves SP-D and abrogates its innate immune functions in vitro

    Possession of a properly functioning innate immune system in the lung is vital to prevent infections due to the ongoing exposure of the lung to pathogens. While mechanisms of pulmonary innate immunity have been well studied, our knowledge of how these systems are altered in disease states, leading to increased susceptibility to infections, is limited. One innate immune protein in the lung, the pulmonary collectin SP-D, has been shown to be important in innate immune defense, as well as clearance of allergens and apoptotic cells. MMP-9 is a protease with a wide variety of substrates, and has been found to be dysregulated in a myriad of lung diseases ranging from asthma to cystic fibrosis; in many of these conditions, there are decreased levels of SP-D. Our results indicate that MMP-9 is able to cleave SP-D in vitro and this cleavage leads to loss of its innate immune functions, including its abilities to aggregate bacteria and increase phagocytosis by mouse alveolar macrophages. However, MMP-9-cleaved SP-D was still detected in a solid-phase E. coli LPS-binding assay, while NE-cleaved SP-D was not. In addition, MMP-9 seems to cleave SP-D much more efficiently than NE at physiological levels of calcium. Previous studies have shown that in several diseases, including cystic fibrosis and asthma, patients have increased expression of MMP-9 in the lungs as well as decreased levels of intact SP-D. As patients suffering from many of the diseases in which MMP-9 is over-expressed can be more susceptible to pulmonary infections, it is possible that MMP-9 cleavage of SP-D may contribute to this phenotype
