Quadrupolar contact terms and Hyperfine Structure
In the interaction of two electric quadrupoles, there is at short distances a
contact term proportional to the second derivative of a delta function. This
contact term contributes to the hyperfine splitting of bound states of two
particles with spin one or higher-for example the bound states of Omega minus
and a nucleus of spin one.The contact hyperfine splitting occurs in states with
orbital angular momentum one(p-wave), in contrast to the Fermi contact
interaction which is in s-states.We find that these contact splittings will be
observable with Omega minus atoms and help measure the quadrupole moment and

Interannual variability of primary production and dissolved organic nitrogen storage in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research 117 (2012): G03019, doi:10.1029/2011JG001830.The upper ocean primary production measurements from the Hawaii Ocean Time series (HOT) at Station ALOHA in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre showed substantial variability over the last two decades. The annual average primary production varied within a limited range over 1991â1998, significantly increased in 1999â2000 and then gradually decreased afterwards. This variability was investigated using a one-dimensional ecosystem model. The long-term HOT observations were used to constrain the model by prescribing physical forcings and lower boundary conditions and optimizing the model parameters against data using data assimilation. The model reproduced the general interannual pattern in the observed primary production, and mesoscale variability in vertical velocity was identified as a major contributing factor to the interannual variability in the simulation. Several strong upwelling events occurred in 1999, which brought up nitrate at rates several times higher than other years and elevated the model primary production. Our model results suggested a hypothesis for the observed interannual variability pattern of primary production at Station ALOHA: Part of the upwelled nitrate input in 1999 was converted to and accumulated as semilabile dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and subsequent recycling of this semilabile DON supported enhanced primary productivity for the next several years as the semilabile DON perturbation was gradually removed via export.This work was

Contextual information and perceptual-cognitive expertise in a dynamic, temporally-constrained task
Skilled performers extract and process postural information from an opponent during anticipation more effectively than their less-skilled counterparts. In contrast, the role and importance of contextual information in anticipation has received only minimal attention. We evaluate the importance of contextual information in anticipation and examine the underlying perceptual-cognitive processes. We present skilled and less-skilled tennis players with normal video or animated footage of the same rallies. In the animated condition, sequences were created using player movement and ball trajectory data, and postural information from the players was removed, constraining participants to anticipate based on contextual information alone. Participants judged ball bounce location of the opponentâs final occluded shot. The two groups were more accurate than chance in both display conditions with skilled being more accurate than less-skilled (Exp. 1) participants. When anticipating based on contextual information alone, skilled participants employed different gaze behaviors to less-skilled counterparts and provided verbal reports of thoughts which were indicative of more thorough evaluation of contextual information (Exp. 2). Findings highlight the importance of both postural and contextual information in anticipation and indicate that perceptual-cognitive expertise is underpinned by processes that facilitate more effective processing of contextual information, in the absence of postural information
Kaon Condensation in the Bound-State Approach to the Skyrme Model

produce a falls below the electron fermi level. This happens at the

High-resolution temporal profiling of transcripts during Arabidopsis leaf senescence reveals a distinct chronology of processes and regulation
Leaf senescence is an essential developmental process that impacts dramatically on crop yields and involves altered
regulation of thousands of genes and many metabolic and signaling pathways, resulting in major changes in the leaf. The
regulation of senescence is complex, and although senescence regulatory genes have been characterized, there is little
information on how these function in the global control of the process. We used microarray analysis to obtain a highresolution
time-course profile of gene expression during development of a single leaf over a 3-week period to senescence.
A complex experimental design approach and a combination of methods were used to extract high-quality replicated data
and to identify differentially expressed genes. The multiple time points enable the use of highly informative clustering to
reveal distinct time points at which signaling and metabolic pathways change. Analysis of motif enrichment, as well
as comparison of transcription factor (TF) families showing altered expression over the time course, identify clear groups
of TFs active at different stages of leaf development and senescence. These data enable connection of metabolic
processes, signaling pathways, and specific TF activity, which will underpin the development of network models to
elucidate the process of senescence

The Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory (AST/RO)
AST/RO, a 1.7 m diameter telescope for astronomy and aeronomy studies at
wavelengths between 200 and 2000 microns, was installed at the South Pole
during the 1994-1995 Austral summer. The telescope operates continuously
through the Austral winter, and is being used primarily for spectroscopic
studies of neutral atomic carbon and carbon monoxide in the interstellar medium
of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. The South Pole environment is
unique among observatory sites for unusually low wind speeds, low absolute
humidity, and the consistent clarity of the submillimeter sky. Four heterodyne
receivers, an array receiver, three acousto-optical spectrometers, and an array
spectrometer are installed. A Fabry-Perot spectrometer using a bolometric array
and a Terahertz receiver are in development. Telescope pointing, focus, and
calibration methods as well as the unique working environment and logistical

Dreaming of drams: Authenticity in Scottish whisky tourism as an expression of unresolved Habermasian rationalities
In this paper, the production of whisky tourism at both independently owned and corporately owned distilleries in Scotland is explored by focusing on four examples (Arran, Glengoyne, Glenturret and Bruichladdich). In particular, claims of authenticity and Scottishness of Scottish whiskies through commercial materials, case studies, website-forum discussions and 'independent' writing about such whisky are analysed. It is argued that the globalisation and commodification of whisky and whisky tourism, and the communicative backlash to these trends typified by the search for authenticity, is representative of a Habermasian struggle between two irreconcilable rationalities. This paper will demonstrate that the meaning and purpose of leisure can be understood through such explorations of the tension between the instrumentality of commodification and the freedom of individuals to locate their own leisure lives in the lifeworld that remains. © 2011 Taylor & Francis
