The University of Manitoba Faculty of Law 1966-1984
From its inception in 1914, the Manitoba Law School had been the joint responsibility of the University of Manitoba and The Law Society of Manitoba. Its four year programme was intended to combine both academic and practical training so that on its completion the graduating student obtained not only his Bachelor of Laws Degree but also his call to the Bar of Manitoba. By the early sixties, however, with the burgeoning of legal education in universities across the country, it became clear that an overhaul of the system was necessary in Manitoba. If legal education was to meet the demands of the last half of the 20th Century and the standards being set in Canada generally, then there had to be a tremendous input of resources. This could only come through the University which, in the sixties, was enjoying good government financing

Cerebral Angiography in Posterior Fossa Revascularization
With advances in microsurgical techniques and refinement of cerebral angiography, many new surgical approaches for the treatment of vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) have been developed. Detailed selective cerebral angiography is essential for confirming the clinical diagnosis, for demonstrating the exact anatomical and topographical vascular pathology, and for deciding on the best surgical procedure. Angiography is recommended to evaluate treated patients both in the early and late postoperative periods. It is an essential element of any future randomized study to assess the value of surgical vs medical treatment of patients with VBI. The benefits of cerebral angiography far outweigh the small risk associated with the procedure
From Invisibility to Readability: Recovering the Ink of Herculaneum
The noninvasive digital restoration of ancient texts written in carbon black ink and hidden inside artifacts has proven elusive, even with advanced imaging techniques like x-ray-based micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). This paper identifies a crucial mistaken assumption: that micro-CT data fails to capture any information representing the presence of carbon ink. Instead, we show new experiments indicating a subtle but detectable signature from carbon ink in micro-CT. We demonstrate a new computational approach that captures, enhances, and makes visible the characteristic signature created by carbon ink in micro-CT. This previously unseen evidence of carbon inks, which can now successfully be made visible, is a discovery that can lead directly to the noninvasive digital recovery of the lost texts of Herculaneum
Magnetic frustration and spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking in PdCrO2
In the triangular layered magnet PdCrO2 the intralayer magnetic interactions
are strong, however the lattice structure frustrates interlayer interactions.
In spite of this, long-range, 120 antiferromagnetic order condenses at
~K. We show here through neutron scattering measurements under
in-plane uniaxial stress and in-plane magnetic field that this occurs through a
spontaneous lifting of the three-fold rotational symmetry of the nonmagnetic
lattice, which relieves the interlayer frustration. We also show through
resistivity measurements that uniaxial stress can suppress thermal magnetic
