Triviality and stability limits on the Higgs boson mass in effective theories
The impact of new interactions on the triviality and stability Higgs-boson
mass bounds has been studied. The interactions have been parame- trized in a
model-independent way by a set of effective operators of dimension 6.
Constraints from electroweak observables at 1-loop level have been included. In
the analyzed region of scale of new physics \La \simeq 2 \div 50 \tev the
classic triviality bound remains unchanged. An extension of the triviality
condition that has been introduced leads to strong constraints on the possible
models. The stability bound on the Higgs boson mass is substantially modified
depending on the scale \La and strength of coefficients of relevant effective
operators.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Characteristics of local inflammation of the fibula bone material from Tell Masaikh (Syria)
Inflammatory states usually precede the development of an organ or systemic pathologies. Whether a given infection that causes such a state has a chance to develop, depends on many individual and environmental factors. Post-inflammatory changes can be traced in the osseous material. Therefore, macroscopic, radiological and histological analysis was performed on the upper epiphysis of the right fibula (caput fibulae) with a lesion within the articular surface turned towards the tibia (facies articularis capitis fibulae). The research material came from the excavations led in Tell Masaikh (Syria)
How Valuable is Polarization at a Muon Collider? A Test Case: Determining the CP Nature of a Higgs Boson
We study the use of polarization asymmetries at a muon collider to determine
the CP-even and CP-odd couplings of a Higgs boson to . We determine
achievable accuracy as a function of beam polarization and luminosity. The
appropriate techniques for dealing with the polarization precession are
outlined. Strategies especially appropriate for a two-Higgs-doublet model
(including the MSSM) are given. Our general conclusion is that polarization
will be very useful, especially if the proton source is such that full
luminosity in the storage ring can be retained even after imposing cuts on the
originally accepted muons necessary for P\gsim 0.4 for each beam.Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures, equations.st
Case study of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease observed in Radom (Poland, 18th–19th century) with literature review
The aim of this study is to present the pathological lesions observed in a skeleton (male, about 35–38 years old) from Radom (Poland), dated to the 18th–19th century. Bone changes were observed in both femurs and both pelvic bones. The head of the femur is enlarged and deformed, described as “mushroom-shaped”, with areas of smooth cortex and cavities, or possible cystic residues. The neck of femur is short and thick. The bone shaft and distal epiphysis do not show any changes. The changes were also observed in both acetabularies of the hip joint (marginal bone formation, subchondral bone remodelling). Radiographic images show bilateral necrosis of the femoral head. There is a significant sclerotization of the femoral head, with a discrete visible crescent sign. These macroscopic and radiological changes match the symptoms associated with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease. This is the first case of the disease described in bioarchaeological materials from Poland
Stężenie interleukiny-6, receptora dla interleukiny-6 i glikoproteiny 130 oraz cytokin zależnych od limfocytów Th17 u pacjentek z cukrzycą ciążową
Introduction: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine which signals through a cell surface receptor complex consisting of a cognatereceptor subunit (IL-6R) and glycoprotein 130 (gp130), which is considered an antagonist to the IL-6R/IL-6 pathway. The aim of the present study was to assess IL-6/IL-6R/gp130 system and Th17 associated cytokines in different time points during and after pregnancy in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and normal glucose tolerance (NGT).Material and methods: Serum levels of IL-6, sIL6R, sgp130, IL-17 and IL-23 were measured in 91 women divided into three groups: GDMin the 24th–28th week of gestation (visit 1), NGT at the 1st visit and GDM in the 29th-32nd week, and NGT at both visits. Results: The patients with GDM recognised at the 1st visit had significantly higher IL-6 (p = 0.02) and sgp130 (p = 0.03) concentrations than had the women with NGT, whereas the women with GDM diagnosed at the 2nd visit had elevated sIL-6R concentrations (p = 0.03). The patients with low sIL-6R but high sgp130 concentration had significantly higher glucose levels (p = 0.04) and lower IL-6 values (p = 0.04) than had the patients with low sIL-6R and sgp130 concentrations. IL-17 and IL-23 were detected in approximately one-third of the population studied. A trend towards higher IL-17 levels was observed in the subjects with GDM, but the differences were not significant. Conclusions: Our results suggest that an increased serum sgp130 concentration in the patients with GDM might represent a compensatory mechanism, controlling intracellular IL-6 signalling and preventing the activation of the IL-6/IL-6R pathway. Wyniki: U pacjentek z cukrzycą ciążową rozpoznaną w trakcie 1 wizyty wykazano istotnie wyższe stężenia IL-6 (p = 0,02) i gp130(p = 0,03) w porównaniu z kobietami z prawidłową tolerancją glukozy, podczas gdy pacjentki z cukrzycą ciążową rozpoznaną w trakcie 2 wizyty charakteryzowały się wyższym stężeniem IL-6R (p = 0,03). U pacjentek z niskim stężeniem IL-6R i wysokim stężeniem gp130 obserwowano znamiennie wyższe wartości glikemii (p = 0,04) i niższe stężenia IL-6 (p = 0,04) w porównaniu z kobietami z niskimi stężeniami IL-6R i sgp130. Obecność krążących IL-17 i IL-23 stwierdzono u około 1/3 spośród badanych kobiet.
Higgs-Boson Mass Limits and Precise Measurements beyond the Standard Model
The triviality and vacuum stability bounds on the Higgs-boson mass (\mh)
were revisited in presence of weakly-coupled new interactions parameterized in
a model-independent way by effective operators of dimension 6. The constraints
from precision tests of the Standard Model were taken into account. It was
shown that for the scale of new physics in the region \Lambda \simeq 2 \div 50
\tev the Standard Model triviality upper bound remains unmodified whereas it
is natural to expect that the lower bound derived from the requirement of
vacuum stability is substantially modified depending on the scale \La and
strength of coefficients of effective operators. A natural generalization of
the standard triviality condition leads also to a substantial reduction of the
allowed region in the (\Lambda,\mh) space.Comment: 18 pages 3 eps figures. The discussion in the appendix was modified
